Sooo, I totally want to buy one of everything in here. I stopped in today on a whim as I've been out of oregano for weeks. As an Italian, this has bothered me every time I go to make dinner, haha. (Typically, I buy my dried herbs from the dollar store) I was able to buy just the right amount for under $3, prepackaged in a nice ziplock style bag. Now that I'm aware this place exists, I'm kind of pissed over the fact that when our black pepper grinder broke not too far back, I was going to get one at Bed, Bath and Beyond (and even with the infamous 20% off coupon, they were too overpriced) and I ended up getting one at The Fresh Market, but I should have totally gotten it here! There is also a nice section and selection of loose leaf teas and specialty sugars. I'm a tea person and just has to have my cut of unsweetened green tea every morning for like over ten years now. The different mixture and assortments make we want to venture out of my green tea comfort zone. Among the salts, I could have sworn I saw a Truffle one, which I'll be coming back for along with a new tea to try (once I use up what I have at home). The woman behind the counter was super kind and helpful and carried a conversation with me through the duration of my time there. Stopped here today while in downtown Guilford and found this little gem of a spice shop. Super friendly staff assisted me in finding exactly what I was looking for. They grind their spices while you wait. There products are never warehoused & therefore they are very fresh. Huge selection of spices, loose teas, seasoning combinations, etc. Also sells cute little gift items and books and have recipes available on how to use their products. Such a great little store! I was first introduced to this franchise when visiting Big Sky, Montana. I was thrilled to find out we had one in CT. This location is quaint and has a rustic feel. There are a few locations like Newport. I've been impressed w the potency of both scent and taste of their spices and some of the custom blended mixes. On the pricier side but worth it. Exotic options are my favorite. Boutique atmosphere w an extended variety of dry world spices. Many custom mixtures. Cute mini bag packaging convenient if your trying something for the 1st time or larger sizes for the more "sure" customer. Teas, salts, rubs, recipes etc. Exceptional service. read more

Wonderful spice and tea shop. The gourmet blends are made by the owners right in the store and it's an impressive collection that includes meat rubs, herb blends, international flavors and more. All the gourmet blends, plains spices, and teas are stored in air tight jars and individual 1 oz packets that are for purchase hang above the jars. The packets list all the ingredients as well as any allergic and dietary information, approved by an allergist. The tea selection is not as large as the gourmet blends but nonetheless very impressive. They have popular flavors like earl grey and also stronger chamomile and chai flavors as well as other herbal blends. As a first time visitor the owner encouraged me to open the jars and actually smell the blends. He seemed very knowledgeable and could probably provide a great recommendation if you are unsure of what to get. In general the place is very welcoming. Some tweaks needed, but worth a visit. I happened upon this place on the adorable Guilford Green. It is nicely kept, very clean, and with beautiful presentation. They have an entire wall of flavored salts, any variety of peppercorns, spices, and teas. Lovely fun items like salt slabs and tea accessories. It was amazing how much was in such a small space without looking cluttered. TWEAKS: The tweaks needed were in the staff knowledge, and in the lack of quality "real" and organic teas & organic ingredients. The staff were VERY courteous, but the girl helping me had very little knowledge about tea. Considering tea is in the name of the place I was surprised that not only did they not stock one Pu-erh tea, (any tea shop should have at least one) but she didn't even know what Pu-erh is. I also asked her if her Kombucha brewing customers had any teas they preferred to use and her reply was "we don't sell Kombucha" again, as a tea seller you would want to know what teas to steer someone towards when they ask about Kombucha, a pretty common use for teas. Finally I decided to buy something, there were clear prices on everything, but I wasn't asked how much I wanted. After seeing her filling a bag very full of a spice I will use fairly infrequently, I said that was enough, but, only at that time was I told there was a 1oz minimum required. This should be communicated to customers before packaging. "How much would you like? There is a one ounce minimum, would you like more?" For me this was a situation wherein it was way way too much herb and I may have opted not to buy any, but then I was in an awkward situation and felt it would be embarrassing to not buy it after she had already filled a bag. For other customers, it might actually increase sales to ask what a customer what tey want and if they want more. "How many ounces would you like." Might be a great way to ask. The ingredients: it's a very small shop, but, there was either no organics or so few I didn't see them. A lot of the teas list "Natural" flavoring, which is a complete misnomer and actually not natural in any colloquially accepted use of the term. It's a wealthy area and I think it would support some higher quality choices that don't rely on the misleading boost of a natural flavor, and this area would likely support more organics. Overall I would come here again now that I know there is a minimum amount required, and I can make an informed choice. read more

I love this place! I cannot believe I have not taken the time to explore the Guilford green sooner. I usually bolt in with a mission, which is almost always gifts for small children. Despite the fact it was pouring rain, I decided to walk about this time before I went into the Purple Bear for gifts. This was the first place that caught my eye. It was a foodie haven. So many gifts and goodies for tons of people on my list. The woman in the shop was super nice and gave me a brief tour of the various sections. They had so many wonderful things! There was a wall of salts. Black salt, pink salt, spicy salt (ghost pepper), sweet salt (chocolate), and salts I didn't even know I wanted (Chardonnay barrel, Merlot). There were peppers, paprikas, and in case you needed help they had pre-combined packages of spices perfect meats, seafood, roasts, and dips. I picked out a nice Korean BBQ rub and a packet of Chinese 5 spice. And then just when you think you cannot for more in your hands you get to the teas and the sugars! They did offer some samples, but I refrained because I was too worried I was going to end up with raspberry sugar I clearly did not need. Lucky for me they do have a frequent shopper's club, which I promptly joined. You also get discounts when you buy more than 5 consumables! I was there yesterday and already need to make another trip for more gifts! read more
