The staff are very friendly but they still have the same old bouncers with will give some of the people who come to this place before and had a horrible time because of them a bitter taste towards the place they need to replace them so the place has a whole new feel. I haven't eaten here yet but after leaving the place in another pub we got talking to a couple and they couldn't stop talking about the restaurant and the food in the penny hill speaks for itself I suppose very cheap and tasty I didn't give it 5 stars because I haven't eaten here yet and the bouncers are the old ones from before and I've had a horrible experience with them so that stopped me from giving it 5 stars but i will return soon

Set in what seems like the attic of this yellow, thatched, quaint pub, Duke's restaurant seats about 30 maximum. It is like a hidden little gem overlooking Lucan village and, if it is quiet, like your own little getaway. The staff here are very accommodating and always available for your attention. I have sampled a variety of dishes here with no complaints, all tasty. I particularly enjoy the ceasar salad, which has the lightest, yet crispiest croutons I have come across. Downstairs you will find a nice quaint pub with quiet areas to sit in small or larger groups. Bar food is reasonable, if not a little bland. The menu for the bar rarely changes and chicken can be often dry. However, if you make a complaint, the staff here cannot do enough to help rectify the situation. I think this may have something to do with the hands-on management, with the proprietor regularly on site. Food is better in Duke's than in the bar.

We made a reservation same day for 8 people and were pleasantly surprised. The place was pretty big, unlike a typical pub. It has high ceilings, very clean and did not smell like cigarettes. We loved the christmas decor and big christmas tree! We were served right away, our server was very nice, she even moved our seats because it was too close to the band and we would've been squished. The food was also excellent! Furthermore, we spent less than 100 euros for a full meal for 8 people which was fantastic! Would totally go back when I'm in dublin again, great for family meals!

I am just old enough to remember the Ball Alley before it was refurbished. It seems so long ago…read morethat I remember having my first pint there in what seemed, to a young man, like a dark outpost, far away from all civilisation. It was not without it's charms. Today, or post refurbishment, the pub has managed to remain a classic pub, retaining all the values things that made it and make it so good. The Guinness is among the tastiest in Dublin. The staff are great. Dropping pints down to you, clearing tables and asking "How's the father?" In top of this, there's never (excluding the rare band appearance) loud music playing. The only thing you have to talk over is the sound of other folk, having the best conversation they've had all week. So do yourself a favour. Call up that friend you're about to lose touch with, and get down to the Alley.
