My daughter wanted to show us this place because she came here once with some friends. It was pretty fun I thought and they have enough soap molds to work with. The place was pretty busy for a Saturday afternoon. They have plenty of scents to choose from and the basic colors for the soap and paint. The concept is simple: grab your molds, pick up the scents, pick colors for your soap, find a seat then wait for them to bring you the liquid soap. You then mix it around until the soap hardens a bit. They take it and cool it off until it hardens then you can paint it. The total time takes about an hour. The cost is 5 a person plus 5 cents an ounce. We did several soaps and it cost us about 40 bucks. read more

The Soap Factory has so much potential! "Potential" is the key word here. Let me walk you through our experience here: -It was difficult to get instructions on what to do. You walk in, and you just kind of stand there until you happen to see an employee walk by. They need better markings, posted instructions, or a front desk with someone to help. -The molds were really gross!! They looked like they hadn't ever been cleaned, which is ironic for a soap place. -Overall, the whole place was a little dingy. It wasn't super clean, and it could be decorated more cutely. Even a few artsy pictures would add so much to the feel of the place! -There was a lot of variety with mold shapes, colors, and scents! There was so much to choose from. -Our paint got rubbed off the soaps when it was in the bag. This was sad because the lady helping us said she would spray it with something that would make the paint stay. -The whole place had a sort of weird feel. It was very quiet. There was music playing, but it was so soft that you couldn't hear it if you were talking. Also, our girl helping us, Chantilly, talked SO QUIETLY!! We couldn't hear her!! We visited The Soap Factory back in August after finding this place on a list of things to do with kids in Provo. We've been using the soap at home ever since, which has allowed us to happily reminisce about this experience and the trip in general. I appreciated that we were able to make family memories without getting a bunch of junk that would just be thrown away later. It has literally resulted in months of happiness (even if I'm only writing the review now). What could improve: When we were there, many of the essential oils had gone rancid. It looks pretty to have a giant rainbow of options, but if customers can't rotate through them fast enough it would be better to just have fewer. There were also games to play while you waited for your soap to solidify, but every game was missing pieces and in terrible shape: the playing cards were all dog-eared and ripped, and we spent most of our waiting time rolling soap scraps into replacement Mancala pieces (we never actually had time to play as a result). Games available to the public will obviously get pretty beat up, but getting even a few used games off of KSL would make a big difference. Other reviewers have mentioned the underwhelming beige decor, but we thought that was forgivable since that's not really essential to the soap-making experience (even if it wasn't cute or inspiring). As a side note to parents out there, we would also not allow our children to choose blue or purple paint next time because those colors were surprisingly messy once we wore through the clear outer layer. It cleans up just fine with regular cleaning, but children don't always think to splash out their colored drips--which leaves the sink a bit messy until next bathroom cleaning day. Quibbles aside, we definitely plan to come back next time we go to central Utah. This is a fun experience gift at a reasonable price with a consumable end product that won't take up space in your house. If we lived in Utah, I could imagine ourselves going on date nights here as singles, doing birthday parties with the kids, and/or taking out of town guests here for a memorable experience while they're in town. It is a solid 3.5 stars now, and has the potential to be a 5-star business over time. Even as it stands, we would happily come back when we're next in town. read more

David, the owner, was super helpful when I struggled to choose scents and mix-ins for my soap. $5 lab fee felt high when I first walked in, but I'm happy paying that after, I figure i used at least that much in essential oil, mixins and the mess I made. lol Prepare to spend an hour or more in the store. CUTE. I took my girlfriend here, like, a month ago. We made soap that looks like brains because we're children. The employees are so nice, too. One of them looked and talked like the next Ryan Seacrest. He was so passionate about soap. Hannah and I have come to a mutual consensus that we love him and hope he is famous some day. There was also this really cute girl who was kinda shy but knew SO FREAKING MUCH about soaps and was a total sweetie. We bought some lotion cuz she totally sold us on it and I still use it every day. They had a Tardis mold. And it turned out BRILLIANT! What more can I say? Welll, one more thing. Not a super fan of the no way to dry your hands off in the bathroom thing. The reason is environmental and we are directed to drip dry or use available fans, and I applaud the awareness and care that is being taken; however, the only fan I could spot was the one where we lay soaps to dry before we take them home. It seemed wrong to wave my dripping hands over everyone's beautiful soaps for sheer convenience. But yeah, they teach you well how to get the soap solution into every corner, when to stop stirring, and how to get the soap out. Do it right and the soap pops right out of the silicone mold perfectly shaped and tickety-boo. read more

Found this place on Yelp and decided to come here when our Pioneer Day plans failed. It was extremely empty because of the holiday and Mitchel was extremely kind and patient. He helped us through the different types of product we could make. There is a base five dollar fee for supplies and "lab" but everything after that is mainly weight. I made plenty of soaps and the total was eighteen before my tip! Definitely a neat spot, I will probably come here for a date night. Make sure you come when you have plenty of extra time because the process takes a bit of time especially if you want to make your soaps very detailed. read more

I've been here twice and feel like it has gone down-hill as it has gotten more popular. The atmosphere is underwhelming and beige but the concept is so cute and for a much better price than something like "Color Me Mine". However, our most recent visit had major staff issues: We couldn't find any employees when we walked in so after waiting around awkwardly a customer finally told us how to get started. We then noticed many of the scents and colors were out, we had to go find someone to ask for the soap, and the at-table directions were a bit confusing at some places. Worst of all, when we were trying to check out we couldn't find any staff. After waiting around (again!) for almost 10 minutes, and with a line building behind us, my husband finally went into the "Employee Only" area to find an employee to help us. It's a cute concept but the major staffing issues which really hurt our experience. read more

My family went here on Saturday for a fun activity. We were the only ones in the store and David, the owner was very attentive to our needs. He let us try samples of sugar/salt scrubs and was very generous. He was extremely knowledgeable and helpful! He shared interesting information about his soaps as well as how pioneers made soap (eeew!). The kids made soaps and they helped my husband and I make chocolates. They had a lot of fun and love their soaps! The chocolate was so good that we ate it all before we left! That being said, I am not sure we will return very often, as it was an expensive family outing for us. I realize that their pricing is the way it is due to their high quality products, but we typically spend less for family dates. If you've got an hour or so and some money to burn, this place is fun! I love the idea of this shop, but we had a group of 4 come in and there was an employee right there to tell us to wash our hands and pick out our stencils and she'd be back to tell us the rest of the steps. Well, no one eve came back to tell us what to do so we just moved on and did all of that ourselves. When we finally sat down to make our soaps, no one came to give us instructions for awhile so we just started doing it ourselves based on the paper flyers on the table. When someone came to check on us, we asked for white soap and a different employee came and brought it out to us like 5 mins after another person took our soap moulds back. When they brought everything out, I was missing one of my soaps and it took them 15 mins to bring it back out to us and by that time we had all finished painting. By the time it got to checkout, there were multiple groups waiting to pay and leave and no employees could be found anywhere. Overall we thought it would take half an hour to an hour to make these soaps and we ended up being there for 2.5 hours. It was fun and the idea is cute, but it was really unorganized and we felt confused the whole time. read more

A moderately interesting activity for the kids. They made some bars of soap and a bottle of lotion. Don't bother with the lotion. It's a low-quality base and very oily. Be advised that they don't provide any paper towels or other means to wipe or dry your hands under their misguided save-the-planet policy. When your kids have paint, soap, and lotion all over their hands all you'll get is a condescending, "No, we're zero waste" as the little ones wipe everything onto their clothes. read more

This place rocks!!! It kicks the color out of Color Me Mine (to say it in a nice way). You not only color your items but you get to make it. There's so many molds to choose from. David is so helpful and knowledgeable in which essential oils pair well together. The first time my husband, teenage son and I came to Soap Factory was in Nov 2015 at their old location on Freedom Blvd. The new location is far better. Came here to make soap for a friend's birthday. I know jack about this kind of thing but the staff was very friendly and happy to help. They explained things well and were patient with my questions and mistakes I made, being that I'm a clumsy person. I expected to make several irreversible mistakes and ruin everything forever because that's how I usually operate with artisanal things but they make it simple for you and there's not much you can do that they can't help you fix. I felt accomplished at the end and I'm sure my friend's going to like what I made her. I'd recommend, it's not expensive and it seems like it'd be great for a group activity or a weekend out with friends. They also get points for being really eco-friendly. I stumbled upon this on accident as I was exploring Provo and I am so glad I did! Although a little pricey for soap, I really enjoyed the process!! I made a honeycomb one and my bf made a sheep one and we paid around $20... the experience was really fun. You get to pick a shape, smell, texture, etc. they also gave us two free small charcoal soaps to help out the environment, I believe. It's a really fun place and perfect for a date night! read more

Not great instructions on how to keep the mix-ins from settling at the bottom!
