We planned a short getaway to celebrate a friends 75th birthday and we've enjoyed Youngs pubs in…read moreother locations. We had our new puppy in tow and Youngs offer a reasonable dog companion rate. The king bedded room we were allocated was at the front of the pub as many rooms and a large part of the the pub were being refurbished. The establishment had taken time to phone me as I had requested a 'quiet room' and were worried that a street facing room might be too noisy...I still decided to travel but found that the room did indeed suffer from traffic noise from around 07.00. The external noise issue was not helped by the newly refitted room having window fasteners missing which meant you could not actually seal the window. The room was comfortable and had a great bed and lovely linen. However the newly refitted bathroom had a floor mounted mixer tap that had a) been mounted very badly and was b) already unscrewed from the floor and listing at a 40 degree angle. How the unit had not yet spung a leak was beyond me. Our friends room was slightly smaller but suffered from poor lighting for reading despite having about six lights. The bedrooms we felt also had a degree of poor housekeeping as we found a half drunk bottle of prosecco in our fridge and litter next to the bed in the friends room. The staff we encountered were very friendly and a real fire was lit in the bar which was lovely. So we were disappointed with our stay, which was a shame. Would we return? Yes probably, but make sure we had a newly refurbished rear facing room....

A great pub over 3 years ago,, but so disappointing this Summer…read more We've tried it twice , giving it the benefit of the doubt after the first time, but still very poor. Limited / poor menu and very odd 'add-ons' to the food that are not described on the menu. The pub was nearly empty on the 2 occasions we visited - the reason obvious, very poor. Looks like mew management (again) but same old poor quality. A real pity.

For the past 1-2 years I have been uncertain about this pub. The menu has constantly been changing…read morefrom a classic pub menu to a medieval style menu, along with live music to go along with it, to a tapas menu. Every time I visit I hesitantly and hopefully return for a classic pub lunch. For one, the cheeseburger was made with brie cheese. The thing that's wrong with this is I expect cheddar or american cheese when going to a pub for a burger, not brie, making it clear they're trying to make if fancier but it's not working and it's not what I want or was expecting from a classic British pub. Another example is the 'Warm Chocolate Brownie', which was exactly how it was advertised. I asked the server if it came with ice cream and she said yes. I was expecting a soft, warm brownie with a scoop of ice cream on top. However, I received a dry, not very warm slice of brownie with a lot of raspberry jam poured on top of it and a scoop of ice cream plopped on top. In short, it was not good. This is just another example of how the Filly Inn is trying to make their menu fancy and more upmarket, however not advertising it well, nor executing it to a good standard either. The menu is not very big and what is on the menu is not very good. Although the food is not good, they have a large seating area, indoor and outdoor, and dogs are allowed.

WOW!! I hadn't been in here for a few years despite living nearby, but I called in for Sunday lunch…read morea few weeks ago after my dear mum said it had changed hands and things were on the up. I have to say the food was superb, at the time I think i even said it was the best sunday lunch i had ever had, I think I was a little taken a back by the quality of the food on offer. They have successfully managed to retain some of the old charm and proper pub feel, while making the dining a cosy, friendly experience that is all about locally produced food. The lamb had already sold out (turn up early or book on the phone if you don't want to miss out) so the three of us had duck, chicken and beef. Each dish was cooked pretty much to perfection and the home made yorkshire puddings were great. Sunday lunch just how it should be! This pub focusses on local, fresh produce all of which is prepared on site and served in simple, traditional dishes. The menu is short, but in my opinion that is the way it should be, as it means each dish excels. It is always so disheartening to find a pub that has 30 dishes on the menu as you can almost guarantee each one will be mediocre. Not the case with this pub. To top it all off the ales are well kept, the Bowmans "swift one" was a very refreshing pint and anything on tap from Hopback is a safe bet. All in all this pub comes very highly recommended, great food, nice atmosphere, good beers and friendly service, what more could you want?!

The pub no longer serves food themselves, instead there was a small pizza van out front, which was out of pizza by the time we arrived (7:30pm). They have no cask ale, only low end beer on tap, but do have a collection of barrels. It is a beautiful location, with lots of outdoor sitting.

The surrounding area is gorgeous, a lake with duckies and which used to supply water to the gunpowder works (long since closed) and woods with many wild New Forest ponies (they don't like to be stroked), cows with horns wandering round and even saw a massive owl, twit-twooing, and a woodpecker. Unspoiled, real English countryside. And now to the pub a little place, with a small field with picnic tables outside, looking over meadows and woods. Delightful. Good range of ales, drawn straight from the barrel. The food is outstanding - not a huge range and they don't do sandwiches or chips. But why would you want that when they offer a selection of ploughmans, all with the finest, local ingredients. I had the pate ploughmans - two good helpings of their homemade pate, home-pickled onion, fresh salad, crusty roll, a mini jar of their own, homemade chutney it was just delicious. My companion went for their homemade pork pie, which also came with salad and coleslaw and chutney, and was gorgeous - crumbly pastry, a good jelly and firm meat. Yum! Apparently they don't sell tea. But if you're in a pub, I have no idea why you would want a cup of tea, so no marks off for that! Oh, and they also had a live jazz band playing in a small marquee they had put up. Can't guarantee they will be there everytime though! Cannot recommend highly enough.
