A wonderful restaurant where you can enjoy a large and delicious southern meal with kind southern hospitality. This restaurant gives you fried chicken, and a host of sides that will surely fill you up and leave you smiling. Feels like you are visiting a southern family that specializes in all the southern favorite foods such as creamed corn, mashed potatoes and gravy, fried okra, collar greens, green peas, and several more. Drinks are included in the price and you get an option of lemonade, sweet tea, unsweetened tea, and water. You can ask for an Arnold Palmer and they can make that as well. Parking is a little confusing as the allowed parking spots for the restaurant is on the left as you enter the parking lot, and the entire right side of the parking lot says the spots are reserved for the Smith House hotel. There is a neat gift shop on the upper floor which is where you pay for the wheel and an old gold mine on the bottom floor where the dining hall and restaurant are. Coming to the Smith House has become a family tradition and we hope they stay around forever. Thank you to the staff and a solid high five and five stars for them.

I've lived here for 30 years and have always wanted to try the Smith House! Today my friend and I enjoyed lunch there! Due to Covid restrictions, you no longer eat family style together with other guests, the tables are set up for separate dining with just your intimate group. Our waitress was very hospitable. You place your drink order and then wait for your meal to arrive! I believe the selections may change slightly, but the day we went it was - Fried Chicken, country fried Steak, mashed potatoes, corn, lima beans, okra, etc. They definitely gave us plenty of food food for just the two of us (i took a doggie bag home). She mentioned you cannot ask for seconds on anything (we didn't need it regardless). :) A very tiny strawberry shortcake was the dessert. I wish there would have been options for the dessert. I guess I had this built up in my mind for so many years, that I had extremely high expectations, it was good (but I was expecting over the top). I cook a lot of these items at home already, so for me personally there wasn't anything extra special with the food. It was nice to walk around and see the old photos of the location and how it has changed over the years. I can check this off my list now. :).

Great chicken (but you can only have one piece).

I had been waiting for quite a while to eat at The Smith House. We ate lunch there this past May, and we were practically the only people in the restaurant at around noon. I figured it would be packed since there was a very well attended festival on the square. While the fried chicken was tasty, we would have liked more than one piece. Evidently in the past, you could request more of an item. That is no longer the case. The lunch was really nothing special. No gravy for the mashed potatoes, the mac and cheese had little taste, the green beans were not as good as they could have been. The okra was really good though, as was the stew; we did not eat the black eyed peas. We really wanted to like it, but it was disappointing. The young man who brought the food was very nice, but the food was slow to come out I'd the kitchen. Hopefully we visited on an off day.

Stayed 3 nights - 2 in the main house and 1 in the lodge. The accommodations are very nice, especially the room with a king bed in the main house. The lodge is more modern and very comfortable. It's a quiet place. (You have to sign an agreement to be quiet.) Loved being able to walk to the town square with the shops and Gold Museum. The family-style fried chicken dinner in their restaurant was terrific, and our server was friendly. "Southern Hospitality" does not really exist here. The staff is not very friendly, but we found that attitude throughout Dahlonega, so this was not an isolated event. All but one of the staff at the registration desk acted disinterested. One was actually scowling. Not hospitable. We'd go back because it was comfortable and the location was good. But don't expect them to be friendly.

It didn't matter that we reserved room 6 in the original building. We were told it was not available when we checked in.

I'd love to rate the Smith House higher but unfortunately we cannot. We reserved room 6 in the original building (see confirmation pictures) but when we checked in were placed in room 38 in the new building. I see in previous reviews that the 'owner' answered the reviewer and said they should have gone to the front desk and asked for it to be made right. We did that. I asked for the room I paid for and was told it was not available. I then asked could we have any other room because the room we were given was very small with the smallest window I've ever seen. It was similar to a dorm room. The small room was clean but that is all I can say for it. There is no air conditioning in the bathroom unless you leave the door open and no wants that. I would not recommend this hotel if you think you are going to get what you paid for because you are not.

Within minutes of checking in, the "faux" doorknob fell off. Leaving a hole in our door. My husband went to the hotel to tell them. The guy came straight over. After 1.5 hrs he suggested moving us to a room at the hotel, because he'd have to go to home depot to fix it. We agreed. I looked up the room difference. Rooms for king that night and next ran $119. We moved. And stayed. At checkout they offered me a $39 discount.??? Room difference was $39 a night? They said it was because they were booked and that's the rate? But they were not booked! And it was not my problem the door handle fell apart! They never attempted to fix anything, but the door handle that fell off... and I apparently paid for. Stir clear! Not a relaxing stay!

When I was setting up our wine weekend trip to Dahlonega, a friend said to stay close to the square. After a bit of looking around I pick this place. I decided to go with a Villa, so this review is less about the hotel. And the Villa was great! Just like the pictures, very relaxing porch, cute oft bedroom, and a kitchen that had all we needed. We were at the hotel a couple times though. We popped over for coffee one morning. And on another day we stopped in to do a wine tasting. I don't think the tasting room gets alot of traffic so I was sure to call ahead. We actually ended up getting 2 bottles from there. I did note the good service and a nice hang out porch here too. It was a nice stay and when we make it back we probably will stay here again.

When it came time to leave , our uber never showed up! We tried again and again to no avail! Called the one and only taxi in the town and she was unable to give us any definite answer. My last hope was to call the lodge . I felt terrible as it was getting later by the minute. It was their New Year's celebration going on. In summary, what a beautiful setting, excellent service, delicious food, charming drinks, with every one of the staff members (owners included) just waiting to coddle and take care of your every whim and desire. Finding the Lodge the first time was a little challenging but just trust the GPS even though it looks like you're heading onto someone's property, stay on the road until you reach the top. Once there, be prepared to be pampered. The road up is a tad narrow, and when we arrived it was covered in leaves (we hit prime color change/leaf dropping) but it's not bad. The rest of the time the road was well cleared with turn-outs obvious and useful if needed (we didn't need one during travels in and out). We stayed in a room on the 1st floor at the end of the hall with a nice sitting room and patio with a beautiful view of the wooded hillside. The room was nice, fully functional and one nice feature were motion lights under the bed such that if you get up during the night you're not stumbling around to find the bathroom door. Loved that. They have a bar with well made drinks and a nice cozy sitting area with a fireplace and comfortable chairs we used to chat with the staff who helped fine tune our winery stops. They have a 'snack bar' (my term) complete with various snacks, cold drinks, a coffee drink, and freshly made cookies each day. Oh, and they will point out a nice little file box with room numbers with homemade candy that magically appears each afternoon! A delicious and generous breakfast is included that is FAR from the typical powered scrambled eggs, paper thin bacon (you know what I'm talkin' about!). No, this is a freshly made frittata, the best home fries I've ever had, fresh cut fruit and more. Great start to each day! They have an outdoor seating area complete with lights, an abundance of bar height chairs/tables, Adirondack chairs, and fire pits. A great way to spend an evening at sunset sipping your wine/cocktails and talking the evening away. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that we opted for the five-course prix fixe dinner in their large communal dining area known as "Wit & Wisdom". It was a great way to mingle with other guests, share stories, compare winery travels, and just share time and conversation. This alone was worth the price of admission! We added the wine pairing so we went all in, and we felt that we certainly got our money's worth out of it! Kicking it off with an Amuse-Bouche and wrapping up the next five-courses, while they appear small, we were absolutely stuffed when we were done. The wines were outstanding and it turned out to literally be the perfect ending to our glorious stay with owners Tommy & Heather and the entire staff that made sure we were fed, comfortable, and part of the Mountain Top 'family'. As I loaded the pictures, I realize I have to give a shout-out to Topher and the crew in the kitchen! You all demonstrate exceptional service and skill. Well Done!!!
