Surprised I have never reviewed The Silver Room. I have been a fan of this store for years and make it a point to visit every time I'm in Chicago. Years ago I attended a poetry event and art auction inside the store but, since moving away, I'm not sure those events are still a thing. I hope they are. I couldn't count the number of sunglasses I have purchased from here if I tried. I always leave with at least one pair, a book, and various other items whether a tote bag, t shirt, button, cards, etc. I hope the business continues to be successful and would love to the location even expand a bit if that's something the owner is interested in. read more

Actually was at Valois and as we walked passed the Kobe Bryant book in their window caught our eye so we stopped in! So impressed with this establishment! Music - great, prices - fair and staff - friendly! Clothes, jewelry, sunglasses, and things in between! Such a wide and powerful collection of books available - including problack books for kids! Oh Yes! 'Silver Room' is a mecca of Art, Culture And Community. It's so much more than just a clothing or jewelry store, though all of the merchandise is dope, Silver Room is place of Fashion, Art, Culture, Community, Spirituality, Knowledge, Diversity and on and on and on. The energy and vibes are always on point. The event calender is right above the check out spot. People are always friendly and helpful (my favorite). Community bulletin board. Black owned buisness. It's smells heavenly. Lol Prices are reasonable. Unique jewelry. Hats. Sunglasses. Candles. Incense. Stationary. Stickers and buttons. T shirts. Etc. I stopped in for an artist reception and ended up buying a vial of tobacco-scented essential oil, a pair of $15 sunglasses whose retro design I love (aviators so huge you can hide behind them, tinted civil twilight blueish purple), and an enamel pin that looked like a highly stylized happy cat with a barbed tail, but turned out to be a scorpion. The man at the counter explained that, and looked scorpions up online and gave me useful information about their significance in ancient Syria. They apparently had a lot of benign associations. Now I'm sure I'll think about my remote ancestors when I'm wearing it. The staff are friendly without being intrusive, and I love the style of the merchandise. It was fun having this as a Wicker Park destination but I love having it in Hyde Park, around the corner. They declined to stock my book this summer but they were nice about it, and will revisit it in the fall--and they explained that their bookshelves are extremely full now. They're right about that; the place could legitimately advertise itself as the only bookstore on East 53rd Street. read more

I absolutely love coming into this store. They carry a nice selection of black made products as well as Chicago themed piece and really nice unique jewelry selection. The service is always so genuine, warm and welcoming. They also host events often which is very cool. Visited for for first time since pre-lockdown, seeking Mother's Day options and wanting to spend money on the South Side. I was very disappointed when, upon discovering a men's bracelet I actually wanted for myself, the female owner was so off putting. At my request, the gracious male salesman politely interrupted her gossip with another employee to ask my question. The way she snapped at him without even looking at me was all needed to convince me I'll never shop there again. See, when the new location first opened, she was actually standing outside the store trying to get people in. How soon they forget. If she doesn't want to treat men as a key target market, she should get rid of men's jewelry and discourage our shopping in the store at all. Bad moment? Maybe but from the time I walked from the small men's jewelry offering to the front door, she could've resolved the offense. She did not. Full Disclosure: This review is about Grown Folks Stories and not the business itself. Sliver Room hosts Grown Folks Stories once a month and I attended as a newcomer. The business has some unique clothing/accessories/candles for sale including artwork. Let me start off by saying that you can FEEL the black power in the room. The owner, Eric, who was not in attendance that night and who usually is, has his raunchy friend Kara serve as his host. This woman keeps it real all night long and encourages the audience to share their story whether it be a damn-I-got-caught-up-cheating to reasons-why-we-all-need-to-carry-and-conceal story. There aren't any restrictions as to what you can or cannot say. You get five minutes to tell your story. It was so electrifying and meaningful to be a part of what was happening in the room. People from all different backgrounds, ages, and political views came and spoke on their basic, yet complicated lives and although some people can and cannot relate to these experiences, the audience showed mad love to these speakers on stage. Kudos to the audience who respected the house rule of shutting down cell phones and silencing them. There weren't any cell phone interruptions that night which is very rare to experience now a days. The best way to describe this event is that everyone in the room is an artist at some point in their life. I like to think that their emotional bottled up stories are meant to be listened by that one person who accidentally and serendipitously shows up one night. Oh, and it's BYOB and a very casual environment. Please bring your own everything because Sliver Room doesn't provide ice, bottle opener, etc. Some attendees even brought their lawn chairs because this event is well attended and can quickly become overcrowded. After the show ends, the group usually gets a drink at a local bar. It was great getting to know Kara and others that night. This black owned boutique is a Hyde park staple. They are very active in the community and put on events with local creators. My partner frequently stops in for insence. I recently bought an enamel pin to rep my high school. Great place to get gifts. There's really something for everyone. I love this place. This place is legit as they come and that's a big sentiment coming from me seeing as how this past Saturday was my first time visiting this place. Saturday I had a family day with my wife, my daughter and my mother in law. We went to the museum of Science & Industry then afterwards we had an early dinner at Pizza Capri. After dinner we stopped by the health store across the street from Pizza Capri and we passed by the Silver Room. From the outside looking in; it looked like they had some pretty cool stuff so I decided to go inside after we left the health store. This place is DOPE!!! Its a very unique yet modern shop that sells apparel and accessories like hats, sunglasses and jewelry. The store caters towards minorities and Chicago natives. I purchased 3 t shirts, 2 for myself and 1 for my daughter which I had to order because they were out of stock. The prices aren't bad either. For all 3 shirts I paid $80 and some change. Also the shop is black owned which is a plus because I love supporting black own businesses, especially ones that offer dope products. Overall if you're in the Hyde Park area and you're looking for some dope or unique apparel or accessories, swing by the Silver Room. I will definitely be back to purchase more items from this store. Also they have several events that they host there monthly, one in particular that I'm interested in particular that I seen great reviews for is an event called Grown Folks Stories. When I was home for the holidays, I stopped in The Silver Room twice (any more would've been too risky!) and got several gifts for friends -- so much to choose from with jewelry, candles, unique totes and t-shirts and interesting journals. I also bought some books for myself. They have really expanded their book selection and I always find 5 or 6 things I want to add to my collection. I love the candles themed to neighborhoods on the South Side. I have Woodlawn - fresh pine -- bring now. This is one of the most beautifully curated boutiques I've been in, plus it always seems to be brimming with shoppers and interesting things going on. The Silver Room is so much more than a jewelry store, though it would be enough if it was simply that, because the jewelry selections here are beautiful and interesting, and appropriate for all people. This is a social nexus as well. Readings, gatherings, classes, shows and special events are always happening here; they have a monthly calendar posted behind the register that lists upcoming events. The Silver Room has sponsored an extraordinarily successful block party in Hyde Park for the last few years as well. I am a fan of this place, and when I find myself walking down 53rd Street, I stop in when I can to see what's new. First, let me just say. I love everything about what Silver Room stands for. The atmosphere, the classes, the music the vibes. I've found myself making the trek from Wicker to Hyde just to continue supporting their efforts. But as trendy and cool as this place is, turns out its a terrible place of business. I put in an order to have 2 custom pieces of jewelry made almost 3 months ago. Each time I've come into the store or called I've gotten the same excuse. "Our jewel guy hasn't been in this week". I've even contacted the owner and never received a response. Maybe they a better off being a community center and not a for profit business. DON'T DO CUSTOM PIECES HERE. And don't expect prompt customer service once they've taken you're money. read more

I primarily use Silver Room for my husband who is great at accessorizing. For casual outings, he typically wears a chain, earrings and/or bracelets (along with his many watches and pocket squares) and Silver Room always seems to have something cutting edge or stylish that he loves (think rocker-esque, silver/gold chains/studs, leather banding). Everything is unique and much of it is handmade by the owner. Wish you guys could have stayed in Wicker Park, but we will gladly make the trek to check out the merch! read more
