Have been using shutterbug for a while , after about a year there have been a few times where i have received somebody else's scans and my photos have gone to somebody else. if they are personal, beware that they may end up in somebody else's hands. after this happening a few times , i decided to purchase a scanner and do that on my own. would still use for developing and the Kodak printer is handy for short notice prints. I've had a camera around my neck since before G. Gordon Liddy took his stroll through the Watergate hotel. My old Nikon workhorses stand like sentinels on my bookshelves in silent testament to the technology of past decades. My Vietnam era Nikon F, my sturdy Nikons FM and FM2. But "F" stands for film, and though some might find the notion of film pure and romantic, It reminds me of endless bracketing, thermometers, timers, mixing nasty chemicals, dodging, burning and stumbling around the darkroom. I shot my FM2 well into the digital age, but I finally made the switch to digital. I'm not a professional photographer, so I don't need professional gear. But I'm not a novice either, and I expect my camera system to deliver the images I envision in my minds eye. I don't need a store full of $8,000 cameras, and a condescending staff, but on the other hand, I need more than a point-n-shoot and a staff of kids trying out their first job. The Shutterbug caters nicely to my needs and style. They carry Nikon DSLR gear appropriate for a hobbyist - I shoot Nikon so It's the only name I look for, but the other fine offerings are there as well. When I asked my husband where we should register for our wedding, he said the Apple Store and a camera store. Veto. Now that we're married, he wanted to buy a lens. We waited a bit to get some help and after talking to these fellas, I know why. The first guy we spoke with had been working at the store for 22 years. When my husband asked to see a wide angle lens for his Nikon, they showed him the Sigma lens he wanted and another one he never heard of, Tokina. So the first guy got called away, but the next guy who helped us really knew a lot about the lens... he told us that he had one and then showed us some photos he took using the lens... at a wedding... where a woman was drinking from a keg. Since we had never heard about the manufacturer, he gave us the whole history of the company. He also let my husband put it on his camera and try it out for a bit in the store. It's really great when people are really passionate about their jobs. The best part was when he was telling us about filters. He said that even if we don't buy one there (it's day one and we are nearing our tax exemption limit), that my husband should really think about getting one to protect his lens. See, and that just shows me that he cares more about the customer and not his commission (actually, I don't know if he makes commission, but you know what I mean). That alone would make me drive the six hours to come back and get more camera equipment from him. read more

I bought my first DSLR from The Shutterbug about 3 years ago. When I purchased it, they were helpful and attentive. Time seems to have changed that, however, as my recent trips (and calls) to the store have yielded less-than-palatable results. The biggest thing I see going downhill is education. The staff at this location, in spite of the higher-end gear stocked in the store, seems to be lacking in knowledge about their higher-end products. While company-wide, The Shutterbug may focus on consumer-grade products, I expect more from a store that stocks high-end gear. Last time I called and asked the difference between two brands of teleconverter, the guy on the phone couldn't tell me. I told him I had been looking at both the brand name lens and the 3rd party. In spite of not knowing the difference, he told me to, "Definitely go with the brand name." You want to recommend one product over another when you can't tell me the difference? Somehow, I wouldn't be shocked if the nearly $400 difference in price had something to do with it. Thanks, but no thanks. I've been there 4 times now to get rolls of film developed. The service has been absolutely terrible every time I go. They act like I'm bothering them. Also, it's way too expensive.Drugstores with a one-hour photo can develop circles around this place for half the price. I solemnly vow to never go back there. Terribly cheesy name, too. I was actually walking down Broadway towards another shop, Groupon in hand, when I was did a double-take as I passed by The Shutterbug. A local camera store! Taking an extra second or two to convince myself to go and "just browse", I decided to cross the street and do that. Just browse. I walked into the store & was greeted immediately by a friendly salesman. I did a quick scan (my version of "just browsing") when he asked if there was anything he could help me with. Our conversation went like this: "Can I help you?" "Uh, no. I'm just browsing... Oh, but wait. Do you have the Nikon SB-700?" "I believe we do have that in stock." Goes behind counter & lo and behold, they had it. "Hmmm... You guys don't charge tax here, do you?" "No, not unless you want to pay it." Funny, but not in a condescending way. I like that. Since this was next item on my expensive hobby shopping list, I knew the going price for this. I did the quick math and realized it was the same as buying it online at some Amazonian place. Hey, I like supporting the small biz (disclaimer: as long as it doesn't put a bigger dent in my wallet). "I'll take it... Hey, do you also carry Pocket Wizards?" Long story short, they do carry, Pocket Wizards, but I exercised restraint. Another quick glance around the shop made it clear they had all your camera needs here. I hustled my way out after buying for fear of more items find its way on to my credit card. In less than 10 minutes a happy new owner of a speedlight. Cross that item off my list. Considering that I was in Portland for a conference/mini-vacation, I call this a souvenir purchase. I had a good, albeit brief experience at this store. The staff was courteous & knowledgeable. If I lived in the area, I would probably frequent this camera store. The next time I am going to be in Portland, I will make sure that I have my photography shopping list. I was in Portland on vacation and had forgotten the charger for my camera. According to two different shops the chargers are impossible to get as are spare batteries. Mike at Shutterbug volunteered that he would be happy to use a charger from the same model to charge my battery for me at no cost. This type of service is hard to find these days and is why everyone should make sure to frequent their local camera shops. I will definitely be back. read more

I'm a strong believer in spending my money with local businesses when it makes sense, and the staff won me over. I went in shopping for a new camera, something better than a point-and-shoot. I had done quite a bit of research into mirrorless and DSLRs and been discussing features, options and our budget with my wife (who has more photography experience than I do, but is not a fan of shopping for tech). I had a couple of ideas, but very little hands-on information. David Carrilo (sales person) and Jon Gilbert (store manager) were both, over the course of two days' visits, very helpful, patient, professional and knowledgeable in determining what i was looking for, how I planned to use the camera, what my options were, how best to use the various features, and in both letting me fiddle with some cameras and showing me the hardware. The took the time to listen to my rambling questions, providing very competent, patient and appropriate to my lack of knowledge answers (they didn't go too far over my head). While I wound up making a purchase elsewhere (a deal that was too good to pass up, and having been somewhat out-voted by my wife (who is much less prone to the whims of new gadget purchases than I am), I was very pleased with the professionalism, knowledge, courtesy and service at The Shutterbug from David and Jay. I went back to let them know to take a camera off hold for me, and purchased a number of accessories (that I had price checked online and elsewhere and found them competitively priced on), helped by another very courteous, friendly and knowledgeable salesperson (I didn't catch his name). I will definitely go back for service and maintenance (though I have no experience with the quality of their service department, they have set my expectations pretty high) and for accessories and future purchases. read more

My original review for The Shutterbug was not good for a variety of reasons. However, I recently spoke with the manager, who apologized and admitted to screwing up. Not just that, he comped me for a couple items I needed for my camera in recognition of their mistakes. Apparently they were going through a transition in software/systems and ordering has not been tip-top. FORGIVEN. Any business that admits they sucked it up and is willing to make amends is back in my book (and out of the black book). I plan on returning for my future camera needs. read more

I was In a hurry and I asked for help to mover through the process. The employee suggested that she was not interested in "showing" me but "teaching" me the process. I bought some equipment for time-lapse control of my camera. It was 3rd party, not a Canon unit. This made me feel a bit wary, but ok. The Shutterbug guys insisted it would be great. Getting home, before cracking the box, I just had to search the internet on the part. Low and behold, it didn't work properly with my camera, and the models it did work with had incredible poor reviews about it as well. Well, it's ok. I'll just return it. NOPE! Shutterbug, and an unopened package, WONT TAKE RETURNS. They gave me store credit. Not only are they uneducated, they will sell you the wrong products then won't take them back. Personally, they will NEVER get my business again and I'll be reporting them to the Better Business Bureau regarding their return policy. read more

Shutterbug is the shit!! I always get my film developed and they are always super helpful! I went in today to get film developed and one of the rolls got caught up in the machine and destroyed. I wasn't upset at all because the roll had come out blank BUT not only did they give me a free replacement roll THEY ALSO DIDNT CHARGE ME FOR THE DEVELOPMENT and they offered to take a look at my camera to see why the roll came out blank. 10/10 customer service, couldn't think of many camera shops that would do that. A new manager for the store (which I erroneously called "mom & pop"--they have 12 locations and have been in business more than 40+ years, so while it is still family-owned, they are substantially larger than a typical mom & pop type of store) reached out to me as a follow up to my review from 13 months ago. Yeah! Literally the only shop I could find open on a Sunday to get my sensor cleaned. I had tried and tried to blow this piece of dust off to no avail, only to decide I needed to take it in for a cleaning. This shop dust blew it first to check and what do you know, apparently it was actually only a really stubborn piece of dust after all that picked today to fall off. No cleaning needed (and no fee). My go-to place for getting my 35mm film developed. Affordable, quick, and great quality. They can do same day developing usually, which is rad when I'm extra impatient. And you can get just prints or just on a disc or both. Couldn't ask for a better place! read more

My partner had had a decent experience with The Shutterbug for international passport photos several months ago. They cost him about 12 bucks. I wanted to provide repeat business for my own international passport photos. The experience started out great. The girl who took my photo was super nice and she even had me and my partner approve of my photo before sending us off for coffee while it processed. I had prefaced our encounter by telling her that the photos were international but that US specs were fine per the consulate. When I returned, she wasn't around; someone else rang me up. After running my card, I realized I'd been charged double. I inquired about this error. The guy who rang me up told me that this was the cost for international photos. I explained that these were to be done per US specs and that my partner had international photos here half that cost anyway. Another guy behind the counter chimed in in his coworker's defense that any sort of "photoshopping" they had to do was extra (but double?????) Not wanting to create a conflict or cause distress to these folks, I blinked, shrugged, thanked them and left. Getting my passport is already expensive as it is, let alone having to be charged double for my photos. I made mental note to reach out to the manager. Meanwhile, I finished my application up, getting my photos notarized and signed on the back and so on. As I gathered up all my documents, I realized that that the photos were cut crooked, which puts my application at risk for rejection (and, frankly, is just sh*tty and stupid and unacceptable). However, I had already waited so long to get my stuff for this together and I needed to get this application out asap. I emailed the manager(?) Mazda requesting a full refund, as I was not only charged too much, but charged for poor quality and had had a bad experience altogether. Mazda gets a star all on their own for the swift response and easy-going encounter (which was unfortunately not parallel to my in-person experience). When I went into the store to obtain my refund, the gentleman at the counter (the "photoshop" guy) acted like I intentionally stepped on a puppy's paw or something, so offended at my apparent audacity. I told him that Mazda had invited me to get a full refund for my crooked photos for which I'd been charged double. He offered to redo them. I told him that they were already notarized; he said "so they worked for you?" I told him that I'm concerned that they might be rejected, but that I'd already completed my application. He proceeds and refunds me half of what I paid; I bring this up to him. He's all, "but they worked for you, right?" I calmly reiterate that Mazda approved a full refund for the poor quality product and negative customer service experience. He then becomes even more aloof and cold toward me, as though this was personal to him, or as though my request for a quality product for a legal document at a fair price was egregious. I made everything so easy for him, and had done so at my first visit: did all the work on the back end discreetly with their manager (instead of in-store) and didn't pull a Pretty Woman about it when I returned. Regardless of my grace and chillness about it, he was nasty toward me anyway. No apologies, no attempt at recovery whatsoever. It was upsetting to be treated so badly, especially in response to escalating a prior negative experience. I have little expectation for anyone servicing me in any context and personally reject "customer is always right" ideology. Portlanders in particular won't even stand up straight for you as a customer, let alone bend over backwards. And that's fine, but this sucked. You should still be respectful and give people the time of day. In short, won't be back. Go to Walgreens. At least you can get lipstick and snacks there. read more

It is really not an easy task to get a 6 month old to pose for a passport photo but Mike helped us and he pulled it off. This small shop (which may be one of several locations) is great. My favorite part of their store is the used gear case all the way to the east side of the building. It's not blue moon, but it always has great deals. Today I picked up a mint portrait lens for my zenit slr for 15 dollars. When I bought my used D100 here a few months ago, they were nice enough to mail me the manual and other information that had gotten lost when I bought it. read more

The photos themselves turned out great and I have no complaints about that. I utilized their online ordering to submit my photos. When submitting the photos the first time, it said there was an error and the order was cancelled. On the second attempt, the photos were submitted with no problems. However, unbeknownst to me, both orders processed and I ended up with twice the number of photos and twice the bill. Which, since I was ordering large prints was rather expensive. I do not intend to go back to shutterbug when I need photos printed in the future. read more

Stopped by here to shop for a video camera. They were very patient with my lack of expertise, answered all my questions, and provided really solid advice on the options available. I felt they were very knowledgeable and trustworthy -- they really seemed to want to sell the product that was best for me, instead of up-selling me on a higher priced product. I ended up with a Sony camera which, as they advised, takes fantastic photos and video. I'm very pleased. I also bought a tripod from them. They took the time to take them out of the box and set them up so I could select from the different models, and advised me on the least expensive model that had the features I wanted. Again, good service. I also purchased an international warranty (being from Canada, figured it was a good idea). They didn't have any in stock, but they scanned an emailed me the document when I got home, and the original was sent in the mail. Solid follow up, and great customer experience. I'd definitely return to The Shutterbug. They gave WAY better service than the camera stores I visited here in Vancouver Canada before my trip to the US. read more
