This barbershop, like many local favs has no advertising, no online presence and no previous yelp reviews...AND?? It's ALWAYS crowded. It's crowded because it is full of good barbers. Now...some are better than others so beware. This review is for a ladies cut. I keep a short, natural taper and have been going to Mateo for a few months now. As long as I don't move, I'm staying put. I've had amazing barbers but wanted an amazing barber within 10 minutes from my house. The shop is divided in two, traditional (mainly) men's shop on the right, ladies (Dominican? Latina?) in the front on the left, and another family style in the back on the left. Mateo and one of the owners, Fred, and a few other barbers are in the back on the left. I have never seen Fred's chair empty. There is a "Dave", whom I've heard does a good ladies cut in the right shop. Mateo is soft spoken, speaks mainly spanish and has a great eye. Initially I wasn't certain I was clearly relaying what I wanted because of the language barrier but we hit a stride and he gets it right every time. Many barbers don't edge ladies up around the edges with the straight blade but he does and it is PRECISE! He handles his clippers effortlessly, doesn't cut "hard" and takes his time inspecting to make sure I'm lined up evenly in the front. I'm able to make appointments and have never had to wait. The back shop is much smaller than the front and far less...intimidating, ladies. The environment is respectful, fun and there is always reggaeton playing. They cut all hair types and are reasonably priced. There is a parking lot out front and unfortunately, a little more lingering than I like but it's never been an issue. You can take the hall between the two shops to the back barbershop to avoid walking through the women's salon. For a shop close to Fort Totten, Hyattsville, North Michigan Park & Takoma Park this is a good bet. read more
