As a soccer referee, I like to arrive early and look professional. So imagine my horror when I pulled into Laguna Beach High School with 40 minutes to spare... and realized I left my sneakers at home. In my back seat? My wife's sneakers. Lovely. Stylish. Three sizes too small. If I wanted to referee while tiptoeing like a ballerina in distress, maybe they'd work. Otherwise--no chance. I start running through the emergency options: Call my wife to save me: Not enough time and not the kind of household narrative I want circulating. Drive home: Also not enough time. Google "sneaker stores near me": The desperation search. Up pops Shoe Cellar--0.3 miles away. Perfect. I call and explain I am--quite literally--barefoot in a parking lot and need the cheapest all-black size 10.5 sneaker in the building. Important PSA: Shoe Cellar is no longer on Forest Avenue. They're now at Thalia & PCH. (Dear owners: please update Google/Yelp unless you enjoy barefoot men wandering Laguna with confused expressions.) Naturally, I drove to the old Forest address first. Call again. "Uh... sir... where are you?" Corrected course, and off I go--still barefoot--like a man who has clearly made a series of questionable decisions. I walk in and Beth greets me with warmth, zero judgment, and the calm energy of someone who has rescued panicked customers before. She has three all-black options already laid out for me, ready to save my dignity and the upcoming soccer match. I choose my pair, pay, and I'm back on the road in minutes. I still made it to the match on time, fully shoed, and supplied my fellow referees with excellent material to roast me for at least the next three weeks. Shoe Cellar turned a near-disaster into a comedy with a happy ending. Beth is a hero, the store is fantastic, and they absolutely saved my day. Five stars. read more

Great selection and service. Not many mom n pop stores around so have to support the ones that are left. They know shoes I'm said to see them having to relocate, but so it goes in downtown Laguna (greedy landlords jacking up the rents to unreasonable rates, and the whole promenade fiasco that has taken parking and access away from retailers). Wish them all the best in their new location on the corner of PCH and Thalia. May get more local traffic being in the HIP district. Just so happy to see that they're just moving and not leaving town. It really is a go to spot for men's shoes, women's shoes, they have boots to sandals, and can give you the 411 on each brand and style of shoe they offer. read more

On a stroll with my sister on a Friday afternoon and while walking past The Shoe Cellar I spotted a nice display of ON sneakers. I've been in the market for a new pair and the shoes sure looked super comfy. I walked in and was greeted by a friendly and super knowledgeable salesperson. She went over some of the features of the shoes and I went ahead and tried on a pair. And true to her word, they were one of the most common pair of shoes I've ever experienced. I expressed to the salesperson that I would think about it and left. After two days of literally dreaming about the shoes, I returned today and as of this writing I am wearing my new shoes and feet feel like they are walking on clouds. The reason that I went here is because I like their Birkenstock collection. The staff is very friendly and helpful all of them. Any shoe store that carries a shoe that fits me... size 14-15 gets a 5 star rating! In these days when most stores carry only up to 12 or MAYBE a 13, it tells you they just want to do volume on the easiest customers... However, the Shoe Cellar is a place that has a good selection for a small shop on a fairly touristy street, and I feel that it started off its life decades ago in the days before online and mega discount centers. As a result... the inside feels a bit dated and run down. The staff is friendly like my grandfather... probably because he is about the same age... and the couches are soft and beaten from the millions of butts that have been there before me. Never the less... the prices were FAIR... not over-inflated for a touristy area. The selection was GREAT for me (big-foot) and they have some INNOVATIVE brands, as well as some classics. I went in the other day with my husband to look for some Birkenstock shoes. When we walked in there was no greeting but we didn't really mind we thought we would eventually be talked too. There were 2 other men in the store shopping for socks and asking questions to whom I believe is the owner. The owners mother was sitting down and seemed to be pretty upset about the fact these men asked if there was another place in town where they could get socks. The mother then proceeded to ask their ethnicity and where they were from very rudely. She stated "we aren't cheap here" in a belittling tone to the men who were simply trying to find another alternative. Then she proceeded to ask the men what language they were speaking and eventually she was talking about how their land was being bombed... At this point me and my husband are kind of flabbergasted that she would start speaking like that to these customers. We immediately walked out. They didn't bat an eye. I understand it's a business and that people work hard for their share but that was completely out of line. I wouldn't step foot into this establishment ever again after that encounter. It left a very sour taste in my mouth. Ps. My husband also wrote a yelp review and they replied with lies. 1. We weren't impatient 2. His son was not present 3. The customer service in this store is HORRIBLE!!! I tried on a pair of shoes in 7.5, liked them and purchased them. When I got home and went to put on the shoes they were big on me, I didn't understand what happened. I went back to the store to exchange the shoes for a smaller size and the guy that sold me the shoes said "well, what size do you wear?" I bought a pair of shoes back in early January, and the very next day I found the original pair of shoes that I was looking for elsewhere. I went back to The Shoe Cellar and returned the pair that I had bought from them. Since I paid in cash, they told me that they had to send me a check since they did not have cash on site. I was told the check would be here in 2-3 weeks. It has been over a month now, I called 2 weeks ago and was told that I would get a call back and never did. Terrible Customer service. I ordered a pair of Naot shoes and they did not fit when they came. I have called numerous times to send them back and re order the next size up. Omg- I wish I'd read the reviews before we shopped here, but the truth is my wife and I have been shopping here for the last four years in our yearly jaunts to Laguna and I trusted the owners. Our experience clearly follows the pattern other have written: don't special order anything from this store! Despite their promises (anything to get a sale) they won't take it back even if it's the wrong size. Our story: Wife and I decided to buy each other shoes for the holidays. I selected a nice set of Mephistos for myself and the wife wanted a pair of over the knee boots. Unfortunately the boots they had in stock were one size too big. The older woman (owner?) promised they could special order anything we liked, ship them right to our home for free and of course we could return them if there were any problems. Wife had some second thoughts and they threw in a little discount and the promise she could return them if they didn't fit. You can guess the rest! Once the boots arrived, they were so uncomfortable she couldn't wear them. They just pinched in all the wrong places. When she tried to return them, not only did they refuse to accept the return, but they got darned nasty about it even going as far as accusing my wife of lying and trying to rip them off. We had our original receipt and everything, they just refused to accept the boots because they were a "special order". Nice. No wonder Amazon is wiping small shops like this off the map! Made a second trip in because the size that I paid for and was out of stock was suppose to be shipped to my home. Never received, and then when I called, never called back. Drove to store with my Amex bill in hand, and at first "Guilty as Charged" as a customer,until I found the order in thier binder. Then the store associate goes back into the stock room and comes spit with the shoe and says "here". No explanation or apology for the inconvenience of driving in to resolve. We were about to leave on a Hawaii vacation, which is whY I got sandals. I checked everyday, and they hadn't arrived. The day before we left they came. I'm really surprised at the negative reviews for this store because they seem like isolated, unfortunate experiences that is not the norm for this store. I love this business. I've had nothing but excellent, speedy transactions with this store. The store is gorgeous and they have an amazing stock of shoes. The owners and staff are extremely knowledgable about foot wear. They helped me to figure out the correct size and style of running shoe I really needed for my feet so that they no longer become sore or achey. Also, if my size wasn't in stock, then the shoes were ordered and received in a timely basis. Perhaps the long wait that someone else experienced might have been due to an outsider vendor the store purchases from? That can happen, however the store is good with communication from my experience. Also, as a bonus, I've been shopping from this store for a while now and the owners have kind of figured out my taste and can make great suggestions. (Clearly, I love shoes!) I have been in love with Laguna Beach since my freshman year of college in 1976. Even though I have lived here in New York City for many years, I always make a bee line for Laguna every time I come out to visit my family. We were there earlier this month, and I took a good hard look in the store which I hadn't done before. I needed sandals to fit my feet that now have a bit of arthritis in them. I want to thank Nicho for all his help! I tried on a beautiful pair of Naots that cradled my feet, but he didn't have the color I wanted. My husband and I went to the Laguna Beach store today with the intent to purchase. We drove in the pouring rain specifically to go to your shop as we knew you carried a good variety of quality shoes. My husband tried on several pairs of shoes and found two (Ecco and Mephistos) that he really liked. As my husband and I were talking, I thought he was just going to buy the Ecco's and decided to get the detailed information about the Mephistos so I could return and buy them later as a surprise for him. I wanted to be sure I got the right ones. At that point the salesman returned and I asked the style name which he refused to tell me. I told him I wanted to be able to surprise my husband later with the shoes. Then I wanted to photograph the box with the name and he pulled it and the shoes away from me. I asked why?? He said many people got that information and then bought their shoes elsewhere. According to him, the "owner" had instructed him 1. not to let people get that information and 2. they had to pay a lot in rent and inferred that we should not be able to get information about the shoes . That definitely was not my intent. My intent was a gift for my sweet husband. He then proceeded to put away the shoes we intended to purchase. I did not understand his rudeness to a local customer nor did my husband. We had to ask him to get the Ecco shoes back to purchase them. On our way home, my husband stated that he had intended to buy both pairs of shoes. We are saddened by the rudeness of your employee and that it has left a permanent bad taste in our mouth regarding your store. I would suggest that you change your policy and think of keeping your customers. If your service and product are good; people will return. Let's start with the fact I am a local and really go out of my way to support Laguna Beach business. The Shoes Cellar is one of the worst retail stores in Laguna Beach, I ordered a pair of shoes due to them not having my size. They told me it would be in next week. And they would call. No call came, so I called them! they had no record of my order, I watched the guy write the order down in a binder. So I drive down and show them the receipt and the guys says.... that the shoes will be in next Wednesday. We will call you. well....no call came so I drove down again talked to the same guy and he says that he doesn't know what I am talking about. Sooooo I show him my receipt again. He goes on to tell me that they don't have the shoes. I tell them this is getting stupid, and it's now been going on for 6 weeks!!!he tell me to show him some respect!!!! so....... I asked for my money back. I never give one stars but this place deserves it. The employee was rude to me and even ruder to my mom, whom I was shopping with. He was condescending when I asked about the qualities of the shoes I was trying on and took the boxes away. I couldn't even look at them! As I was trying on the shoes my mom went to look at a box, and he grabbed it away from her shouting "no pictures! No pictures!". How rude! She wasn't even taking a photo, just looking at the brand. He then proceeded to talk back, blaming the owner and how people take the name and buy elsewhere. Maybe if the employees were more engaging, friendly, and cared about their customers it would help. Zero! They don't deserve 1 star. They are rip offs. Back in Feb. I purchased three pairs of shoes, two were supposed to be shipped to me. I paid in full for all three pair. I was then informed a week later that they did not have my size in the two shoes that were to be shipped to me. They said they would credit my card for the amount of the two shoes. They never did. To make a long story short, they still haven't credited my card and it is now May. I called the store again, and the man there said he would look up my transaction and call me the next morning. He didn't. I called back and got the gentleman that did the initial transaction and he's is claiming that he needs my card number again. I don't think so! He was talking very rapidly and was impossible to understand. He then hung up on me. I strongly recommend NOT to give these people business. You can find the same brands at other, more reputable, stores. My next step is fling a dispute claim through my bank. read more

I had the worse shopping experience here. I ordered a pair of ugg boots for the price of $180 at the store since they didn't have my size. 10 days later I didn't receive it, I went to the sore and asked about it, the old guy who is the owner, told me very quick that he was going to call me. he didn't . so i called again and again and again and every time he was saying something different. one time he said they shipped it , another time he said they didn't . so eventually I asked him for a refund, since I never received the boots. he asked for my credit card info again for the refund, another time he said he didn't have the expiration date to refund my money. I didn't receive my refund, so I called again, and again and again,.... total I called 19 times -I didn't give up :) - and after month and half . finally I got my money back !! worse shopping experience! will never go back there again ! read more

The Shoe Cellar could be a great place to purchase comfortable shoes, but not if you have to special order any shoes. I found a pair of shoes I wanted to purchase and they didn't have my size. The owner then proceeded to tell me that I could special order them and they would be in the store in a week. So I paid for them up front and was told they would call me in a week. After 2 weeks of no return call I started wondering what was up. I called the store and the gentleman that answer the phone said he could not find my order and he would call me the next day after he spoke to the owner. Again I still received no call back on the status of my order. I then decided I should drive down to the store myself and speak to someone in person. Low and behold the owner was in that day and assured me that the shoes were ordered and they would be at the store in 2 to 3 days and he would call me so I could come pick them up. Then almost 2 weeks past and still no call. Today I decided to drive down again so that I could get them to credit my account, because this was becoming ridiculous. I explained my situation to the gentleman at the store and he still could not find my order, but they did finally have a pair of the shoes in ordered in the store so I was able to take those.The owner of the Shoe Cellar obviously doesn't believe in providing his customers with good customer service. I was told by three different people including the owner that they would call me regarding my order and not once did anyone follow up!! I guess since he had already gotten paid for the purchase he didn't care. I definitely WOULD NOT recommend the Shoe Cellar, they just don't value or appreciate the business that their customers bring in. My experience with this store was very bad and they get one star because I can't give them zero.. After purchasing a pair of shoes I found they were too large. When I attempted to return the shoes the manager pointed to dirt on the sole and said I must have worn them. I explained that the shoes were in the same condition as when purchased three day earlier and not worn by me. They refuse to accept the shoes in return pointing to their policy on the sales receipt. I must say the policy clearly favors never refunding a customer's money. They are at best unethical and not the kind of place you would want to risk your money. They have taught me a $300 dollar lesson about business integrity and honesty. I will pursure their owners with appropriate legal action. Well, if you find the shoes you're interested in when shopping at the store, I agree with the previous review. But if you have to order a pair (because the store isn't stocking your size), good luck! I paid cash money to Joseph Brown, the owner, for a pair of Gravity Defyers on Nov. 7, and was told the shoes would arrive in the mail a week or two later. At the end of Nov., having not received shoes and hearing nothing from the store, I started calling to find out what had happened. The clerk I spoke to (invariably) professed not to know anything about the transaction but said he would call me back. Which he did not. Finally, I got in touch with the owner (Joseph Brown), who said he would credit my account. Which he did not not. I finally had to file a complaint with the BBB to get a credit on my purchase. After reading other reviews about this store, I'm at least glad to see I'm not the only one who received terrible service. My wife and I stopped by there earlier today and I found a pair of Frye shoes for $190 that I intended to buy. Unfortunately they didn't have them in my size so we left. Later on we returned as our car was parked right outside the store. I went back in and brought the shoes up to the register. An older man who I assume is the owner asked (in an unfriendly tone) how he could help me. I explained that I had been in earlier and asked if he knew the name of the style so I could possibly order them online. He bluntly said that they don't give out that information, and basically refused to speak with me further! I have never been spoken to so rudely at a business, when I asked why he was being so rude, and that an hour earlier I was prepared to spend $190 at his store, he asked me to leave! My wife then said let's leave, we don't need to be spoken to like this by this "ass...." and then he said to my wife, "no, you're the ass...."
