A nurse was then scheduled to conduct an assessment on Monday afternoon to determine whether independent or assisted living would be most appropriate. While I could not be present in person due to work obligations, I called in during the assessment to ensure I could provide support. My father answered the nurse's questions to the best of his ability, and there were no indications of issues at that time. Following the assessment, Lisa informed me that an internal review would be conducted. Today, after sending a brief follow-up text to Lisa, I received a call from your Assistant Director. During this call, I was shocked by the tone and manner in which I was addressed. I was told, in a very agitated and dismissive way, that my father would be better suited for another facility, with no further explanation. When I pressed politely for clarification, I was refused any details, spoken to in a disrespectful and aggressive manner, and ultimately hung up on. This behavior is unacceptable from any staff member, let alone someone in a leadership position. My questions were reasonable: I simply wanted to understand why there had been a sudden change after positive earlier interactions. Instead, I was treated with hostility and given no professional courtesy. I am deeply concerned that the treatment my father and I received may have been influenced by bias. As an African American family, it is difficult not to draw this conclusion when no substantive explanation was provided for such abrupt and disrespectful behavior. While I understand if their team ultimately determines that Brookdale Oak Park is not the right fit for my father, there is no justification for unprofessional and dismissive treatment. Families seeking care for their loved ones deserve transparent communication, respect, and courtesy.

My mom was averse to anything that had the word senior in it already. A serious health event accelerated my plans and I had no choice, but to force the decision and move her to Brookdale. Much of the up front decision-making was done by me. Of the options in the area, I preferred the layout, amenities and that there were both independent and assisted living options. I had tons of questions and they answered all of them, they also visited my mom in the hospital to talk about Brookdale and introduce themselves. My mom didn't like being there, to say she was downright disagreeable her first few weeks is being generous. Over time she slowly adjusted. When Covid hit, I was terrified and relieved all at once. Terrified because senior living communities were getting hit hard, relieved because I knew there would people to help her no matter what. They had strict protocols and regular updates, which I'm sure every family member greatly appreciated. When we had issues getting PPE for her medical condition, they were able to help us out. They even had staff on hand that could facilitate virtual meetings. Not seeing her for months at a time was hard, but they did their best. Over time, my mom came to adore members of the staff and they were saying great things about her (even though I knew she could be quite difficult). I'm not going to dress it up, senior living isn't cheap and assisted living is stupid expensive. Seriously, like make you nauseous every time you get the bill expensive. That said, the peace of mind knowing that she was safe and looked after was priceless. Even as my mom's health declined and she moved into hospice (they do that too), the staff was kind, compassionate, and informative.

Also, if you are not a Democrat, you will have people with attitude. Which is typical for Democrats. A lot of people with time on their hands. I've learned to keep to myself. I was a…read more11-month tenant, the building looks good outside, the landscape is not pretty and not kept-up, the sidewalks are not clean and the walking track around the building is not kept-up. I complained about a draft coming from windows, it was cold and the heat did not stop the draft, I was very uncomfortable. The carpeting was not cleaned properly, I had the carpeting cleaned and it was the same company management used, they told me it cost more money to clean up and close to the wall, this is where the dust is and has accumulated, the hallways are the same way, the dust never gets cleaned. The building inside is not modern and not kept-up, the chairs and carpeting needs to be updated, it is 14 years old; the garbage smells throughout the building; the laundry room is not kept-up, full of dust and not clean. So do not rent here thinking it will be kept-up just because it is for Seniors, they take advantage of Seniors, after you sign a lease, you have to stay. I had heavy condensation and ice inside of my windows in the winter when it was very cold outside. The heating unit is inside of a closet and there is an accumulation of dust inside the closet, that can be dangerous, this building has many issues that are not being addressed. My problems never got corrected, so I had to move.

Kerry asked a lot of questions to help narrow down our options. She recommended several places to help us determine what size/feel would work best for our situation. My father-in-law is happy with his new home and we appreciate Kerry's help.

The day we were to…read morediscuss assisted living with her doctor, I found myself calling 911 and sending her to the hospital for what would be 51 days, sepsis, 2 surgeries & 2 rehab stints. Having her return home was no longer an option; which led me to quickly get to up to speed on senior living options, mostly on my own. I found her a place & moved her in all before her release. While I ensured her safety, I second guessed my decisions as she vocally struggled to adjust; it was a lot of change particularly for someone who rarely left her home. Almost 6 months in, a different set of doubts & worries took over. Did I make the right call, could she live somewhere more affordable, would she outlive her money, etc. I don't even recall what search term led me to Senior Living Experts, but I'm grateful. Rebecca listened to my story and made me feel less alone. She thought where my mom was at was the best option in terms of cost, desired location and care needs addressed, but would do the research and circle back. We also discussed the care she received currently and provided a few suggestions. As promised, Rebecca followed up and confirmed her initial assessment. Yes, I'll still worry about her finances, but I now have a better understanding of the landscape and what comes should her care needs increase. If I had a do over, I would have started with Senior Living Experts, they are amazing!

I moved my mom in last October and every single employee with a title has left except for the activities director. The communication is non-existent. They do not answer phone calls, emails, and they do not even change their vms when someone leaves and a new person steps in. It's almost a conspiracy that they do not want you to know what is going on with your loved one. I tried for 16 days to get my moms invoice and they charged me a late fee! 16 days??? I asked them to talk to the doctor about increasing my moms meds. That was 3 months ago and I haven't heard back since nor does the nurse contact me back. Housekeeping is horrible. They clean the middle of the room and that's about it. The caring staff who works their butts off are wonderful and I cannot say enough except I feel bad for the conditions they must all work under. Every business needs customer service! This place cannot get that after all these years? It starts at the top. The director was going to meet with me in July and then she ghosted me. It's now October. It is horrible enough seeing your loved one decline. Dealing with this on top of that makes for so much more heartache and frustration.

It looks as though a new, residential building is set to begin construction adjacent to one I'm in now, which will mean a great deal of noise and debris in air for the next year or two. After sampling the cafeteria food upon first moving here, I can't personally recommend it, though most older residents seem to enjoy it. I'm trying to bring down my own veggies to eat with a plain chicken breast and salad offered, so I can enjoy lively dinner company with fellow residents. Will have to see how things go.
