So we happened upon this shop on a road trip up the coast and it was literally one of the coolest shops that I've ever been to. There are SO many different varieties of shells and everything that you could think of made out of shells. I didn't buy a lot of things because our car was already pretty stuffed as it was for our road trip, but there were a ton of cool items that I wanted to buy. If you have anyone you ever wanted to buy a gift for this is the perfect place for that. Also, the customer service is great they're super friendly and they also wrap your items for you very well. I bought this sailboat made out of shells and they wrapped it in paper then put it into a cardboard box so it was very well protected and stayed safe even though it got jostled around quite a bit in our trunk. If you do happen to be in the area, I consider just visiting this shop one of the must see attractions even if you don't end up buying anything but just looking at all the variety of shells and creative pieces made out of shells. read more

The Shell Shop has A LOT of shells and other knick knacks. Some of the items in the store was really nostalgic to me. I loved seeing those items. Plus, the shell shop has a really big sign shaped out of a shell. I definitely had to scope out this place. However, most of all their inventory is not native to Morro Bay. There is a small section of shells that are from the bay. So, be sure to scope out that section if you want to get something local. I do like that they have different shells and ocean/sea life creatures for sell. They have shark jaws and puffer fish. Who wouldn't want to take these items into their home?! It is a cool conversation piece. Literally, almost everything in the store is for sale. The only reason why they get 3 stars is because I don't like how they have a minimum purchase price for debit/credit cards and they could work on their customer service skills. Even though there were 3 people working behind the counter it was still a wait. When, I finally got to purchase that was when I found out that they had a minimum purchase price and the person was real brusque. I really wanted to take home this cowrie shell magnet that had Morro Bay etched into it. However, it was just not meant to be because it was $4 and I rarely keep cash on me. I wouldn't have minded paying a small debit/credit card price to use it. I did appreciate looking at all of the different shells and shell items but if I am ever in the neighborhood again this store would not be making my list again. read more

Fellow locals told us about this LONG established business, as my spouse collects seashells. He has a biology background, and likes to learn about his specimens' scientific background. When we lived down south, there was another (now retired) sea shell shop we went to once a year. He watched the Shell Shop's video on their website, and was truly impressed with the scope and detailed nature of their merchandise. We were EVEN MORE impressed when we entered the place. We spent A LOT of time shopping, and he bought ~dozen shells for his collection, and a big scientific book with beautiful photos of gastropods. As for our house, I bought a cute and kitschy coconut carved with a pirate's scarf as a female figure. I also bought a heart shaped shell wall piece. Since we live near the beach, we've been slowly transforming it into a true beach house. Found some other items for our next trip to add for home decor. Hubby has already eyed more specimens to buy for our NEXT shopping trip there. read more

This shop has been here for a long, long time. My friend came here 40 years ago when he was a kid and said it still looks the same and the price is still reasonable. There's something truly endearing about this place. The owner is super-friendly and talk about the variety of shells they have here you just wouldn't believe! In addition, the price is very reasonable and I really mean it. Another shop about 300 meters away which I won't mention the name sells the exact same shell for double the price. There are seashells from all over the world. Some are truly exotic. My mom picked up a couple of huge sand dollars the size of a large kitchen sponge and she paid about $6 each. I mean you can go really wild with what they carry. It all depends on where your imagination take you. You can easily put together a big table-top center piece display with a large glass bowl or vase filled with fine sand and a wide variety of beautiful sea shells and corals without breaking the bank. This place really got me going. I am on a mission here and plan to be back! read more

This is by far the best shell store I have seen around. I have been to many in Hawaii, Australia and Southeast Asia and nothing has yet to compare to the stock they have here. The worst thing about them really is the fact that they don't have an online store (which may be a good thing) so whenever I want shells I will have to make the drive to Morro Bay! They have a lot of rare stuff from Great White Shark teeth to rare cowrie shells from around the world. They can ship once you had purchased them in store. read more

Awesome stuff.... too bad I couldn't buy anything! We sat at the jewelry counter for a while trying to make a purchase, two men working we're talking to a women that had already purchased. One guy started walking around the back counter area, Looked at us and then went back to the conversation he had left. My boyfriend and I out loud said I guess they don't want our money. I slowly walked out staring at them while out loud I'm saying I don't know why you guys don't want my money, they barely looked my way. Never once did they acknowledge us or say one minute. The Shell Shop in Morro Bay is a rather large stand alone shop that features all things seashell. They have shells you can purchase for decorative purposes, jewelry, picture frames and more. Their prices are pretty fair (I've visited a similar shop at Pier 39 in San Francisco, which charges more tourist driven prices.) The lady working there was very friendly and greeted us when we arrived to see if she could help us or if we were looking for anything in particular. It was fun to browse the many types of shells-all kinds of colors, styles and shapes. Their inventory makes great home or garden accents. Currently I have a ton of shells in my garden and little jars I've filled with my various beach findings, so I didn't purchase anything this time. However, I think it's a great little shop and a nice spot for a Morro Bay souvenir. read more

My daughter loves to collect rocks and shells whenever we go on vacation. So imagine her excitement when we decided to drive an hour away to come to the beach and check out this shop!!! Pretty nice selection of sea shells and other crustaceans we don't ever get to see complete at the beach. Or never in a large variety as the ones you find here. Puffer fish, shark jaws, abalone shells, cowries, star fish, sand dollars, nautilus and conk shells and a million other shells.....polished. Prices ranged from 25 cents to 37 dollars...depends how bad you want to expand your shell collection. We spent $50 bucks on the first day and $67 the next....but came home with a nautilus shell and a bunch of other cool shells, wind chimes etc. Our daughter had a blast there. Be sure to look carefully at the Items in the locked cases, Many are quite unusual, unique or rare. Do you like shells? Okay then! A genuine local institution seemingly unchanged since the days of my youth, when I would pester my grandparents into a visit whenever they came to town. Loose shells, belly dancers made of shells, compacts covered with shells, lamps inside of shells- they've got it all. Their sign had started looking a bit dilapidated over the past few years, which filled me with an existential dread that perhaps it was preparing to go the way of so many other childhood icons, but then, oh joyous day, on my last trip to the Embarcadero they had spanking new sign art that was *exactly* like the original. The shop is filled with unique shell sculptures, necklaces, wind chimes, giant shell bowls, shell chandeliers, and other various house decorations, or just shells in general. Some of the shell sculptures are so beautiful. This placed is listed as $$ but really it should be $. I found my mouth literally dropping as I was looking around because I was in disbelief of how inexpensive everything was! (You could say I was shell shocked) Walked out with four beautiful gifts for ~$20 altogether, and a large wall decoration for $16. I probably would have spent $100+ here if I were going straight home. They packaged everything up for me securely so they would not break on the rest of my trip. I LOVE this shop. The shells are absolutely stunning, and there are shells EVERYWHERE you look. The place is filled top to bottom with shells from all over the world. They also have jewelry like rings, pendants, and earring for sale from the shells. I bought a gorgeous ring with a black pearl and the white pearl [ying and yang] and about a million other shells to give away as souvenirs and gifts. The big shells are also beautiful, and when I get my dream home, I will come back to decorate with some of these beautiful shells. The best part is the price. For a big shell, they run from 40-100 dollars with the stand included. The little ones can go as low as 50 cents!! The Shell Shop is an amazing place. First of all, the building is totally mid-century cool. There's a huge parking lot. The lady who works there must be the owner, probably right? Well, she perfectly matches this store. If you go there, you'll see what I mean. Anyway, the place is spotless and huge. Any shell you can think of, they have. And they're all very meticulously displayed. Each has a tiny, typewritten description. They also have many items made of shells. After much deliberation, I got a bangle made of red abalone shell for $15 (so cheap!) and it is the best piece of jewelry I have bought in quite a while.
