Visiting local shops with some friends, stopped by this gem. Family owned, friendly, and very patient with me. So many beautiful pieces of jewelry, wood inlay boxes, glass figures, small paintings, metal wall art, and leather items, all by local artists. Terrible experience - staff very rude to my son. When I asked them why they were rude to him, if he had done anything wrong, they replied, "Oh not really, but he was very close to the window display and I am sure you wouldn't like to have to pay for that amount of breakage". Snooty and unnecessarily rude. Not going back and defiantly do not recommend. It is a shame because they have some beautiful pieces. Answering the owners reply - It's funny because as an experienced educator (23 years) I am very familiar with not only supervising other peoples children but also my own. It is quite clear to me that you didn't make the connection that his grandparents were also inside the store with him. We were a large party of 8 people. Sometimes the eyes on the child are not the person you think. I am very aware when someone is politely redirecting a child and when they are being rude, as in your case. If you don't wish to let children enter the store for fear of the thousands of dollars worth of precious material, kindly place a sign on the door that says "no children allowed". It would be more direct than your passive aggressive behaviour. read more

After a four-year absence, we finally made it back to Morro Bay last year (2022) and just returned from another visit. One of my "go to" places is, of course, the family owned By the Bay Gallery. On this recent visit, I met two other members of the family, and both were so welcoming, friendly and helpful. Becky was so gracious about showing me several items and was very sensitive to my price range. I treated myself to a beautiful perfume bottle and found a wonderful sea glass anklet for my daughter-in-law (which they gift wrapped for me). Whether it's jewelry, art glass, ceramics, or other artwork, By the Bay is worth a visit! read more

Went here to buy some jewelry... drove all the way to Morro Bay, to be denied access because I have a service dog. She told me I had to carry my dog... my back is the reason I have a dog to begin with, and there is no possible way for me to carry him without great pain. So sad. Just because someone had a poorly trained dog, doesn't mean people with legitimate disabilities and well trained service animals should be shunned and denied access. Do not shop here. Just to clarify: my dog is a trained service animal, not a "comfort dog". read more

Small shop with incredible art pieces created by American artists. I loved the work by David Lotton and Paul Harrie. Both produce spectacular pieces. Lotton's work is something to behold, with colored glass at the base reflected in a small bowl above. Wide price range for spectacular creations. This smart art gallery is packed with beautiful pieces made of glass, clay, metals, enamels, and wood. Beautiful jewelry. Amazing intricate wood inlay sculptures and jewelry boxes. Iridescent glass pieces. Wonderful enamel wall hangings and sculptures of flowers, butterflies and dragonflies. Another great place along the Central Coast to buy some beautiful gifts. I stopped by just this past Sunday and got to meet the owner, Ray. He was very friendly and professional. I appreciated how he didn't treat me differently because of my age (22). Usually when I walk into jewelry shops I don't get as good of service as let's say an older person who could supposedly afford to pay for more expensive jewelry. This was the 4th jewelry retailer I had stopped by in Morro Bay that same Sunday. By The Bay Gallery was by far my favorite out of all of them. Ray was very informative on what jewelry pieces were good investments and which rings were good for what type of wear. He didn't try to just do a quick sale to me like the other shops. He focuses on customer loyalty and retention. I will be coming back to do business with them and recommend others do the same. read more

This is a very tiny shop that has some artwork, like glass paperweights, for sale on window shelves along with other art on the walls behind the jewelry cases. It's a mom and pop shop that's being operated by the elderly owners. We asked to look at a gold charm in a case. The man said in a non joking manner, very sarcastically, "If I get it out for you, are you gonna buy it today?" I'm not kidding. He was all kinds of put out that we asked. These artists have a variety of marine life charms and bracelets including mermaids in the collection. I said "I'm surprised there is no King Neptune charm." He said "That's just stupid!" Would you like to be treated like this for no reason? I found a Steven Douglas King Neptune charm for sale at Charms in Monterey! We found another shop selling the Steven Douglas pieces and after a visit there over the 3 day weekend July 4th we purchased 3 pieces. I'd recommend avoiding By the Bay Gallery if you'd like to try to shop without manipulation tactics and sarcasm. It might also interest you to know that the sales tactic of the lady owner was to tell us that the first piece we wanted , "Contessa", is going to sold with less diamonds due to the economy so I'd better buy the one she had it stock. Asking around at other shops I found this is simply not the case. read more

I was so amazed to find a gallery of this quality in funky old Morro Bay. It's definitely not the typical t-shirt and taffy type of place that I usually associate with Morro Bay. They have an amazing selection of really unique, high quality stuff. Everything is made in the USA. They have a nice range of prices. I found a beautiful wooden box for a gift and was pleased with the price. Yay, free gift wrap! I will definitely return to Morro Bay just to come to this store! read more

I am a local and while in Morro Bay for dinner, decided to walk in to the store. Initially I noticed the beautiful art and was impressed with all of their beautiful pieces. Though I was not initially there to purchase, had my experience been a pleasant one I would have. The employee, who I now know is the owner from other reviews, did not ask if we could be assisted in any manner and made no attempt to engage his customers. I had found a ring that I was interested in trying or having recreated with the same look, but a curved shape. I asked the man if they made their jewelry, but instead of saying yes, he asked what I meant. I asked again and he informed me that they don't make it there, but elsewhere and that it is all custom. I asked if he could make the ring that I was looking at curved. The man replied with, I'm not trying to be condescending, but if you want that ring, then you don't really want that ring. He stated that if it is curved you actually want a new custom piece. I told him that I understand that. The man then tells me that if I want a custom piece, that I need to sit down and talk about the design, product type, stones etc. The man then made the comment that, "it comes down to can you even afford that. " I was so off put by his condescending nature. The fact that he stated that he was not trying to be condescending, makes me feel that he knew that he was. I have used other local jewelers to have custom pieces made and thought this would be another. I will never go back to his business and will be sure to tell my other local jewelry loving friends to avoid such an unpleasant business owner. read more
