In spite of the name, this is actually not a hotel. Hotel has a double meaning in Australia as I…read morehave learned. It can be a place of lodging, but also many pubs use it as well as it relates to past liquor laws. Using the term "hotel" as a way to skirt liquor licensing regulations. Strawberry Hills is a nice Aussie pub just down the street from Central Railway Station. It looks a little divey on the outside, but the 2nd floor interior is quite nice and stylish and even has free Wi-Fi. This is a good spot to get a drink and quality pub food at a reasonable price in Sydney. If you are dining upstairs, you order your food and drinks at the counter. If you are dining in, the staff then brings the food to your table when it is ready. While they do have a wine menu, there isn't one for the large assortment of beers and cider on tap. If you are not sure what to order, I would list the types of beer and cider that you like to find one that suits you. As for the food, there is a regular menu consisting of pub food and a late night menu of different pizzas. The pricing here is quite reasonable as most mains (name for entree in Australia) are under $20. Had a Sunday night dinner here and opted for the slow cooked lamb shoulder ($18) with a pint of Bulmers cider ($7). I chose lamb because it is harder to find this meat on menus in the US, whereas in Australia it seems to be a standard offering. The lamb was terrific as the meat was fall off the bone tender. There was a bit of fat and gristle on the lamb, but I was okay with this since this helped to accentuate the meat's flavor. The accompanying roasted vegetables and red wine jus were also delicious and complimented the lamb. As for the cider, it was my first time trying Bulmers and I really liked it. It has a very crisp and refreshing taste that paired well with my meal. Enjoyed my meal at Strawberry Hills. The food and drinks here are good and value for your money. I like the ambiance of this pub too as it is modern, yet is casual enough to be a local drinking hole that you frequent regularly.

One of my first food stops in Sydney…read more Having tried cronuts and cruffins in the East and West Coast of America. I wanted to see what the Aussies could cook up in the Golden Coast. I was pretty impressed with the 16 different flavors of cronuts/cruffins they bake each day. However after trying 4 different flavors (Red Velvet, Boston cream, Orange spice & custard and Chocolate Lavender) I wasn't impressed anymore. Mr. Holmes and Dominique Ansel preserves the meaning of quality over quantity. This is not reflected at Brewtown Newtown. Nearly all their pastries lacked a heavy dose of cream. The cronuts did not even have real layers of croissant in between. The cruffins weren't flaky enough. Sure it was covered in sugar but it was missing that sweet spot (literally). The taste wasn't quite there yet. I also got to try something I've never seen before and to be honest I'm a bit embarassed I ate something so sinfully disgusting. The Elvis burger. I have no idea why it's called that and I don't think this is in anyway a rock star burger. It's basically a burger with plain cronuts as the buns. The moment I took a bite I could feel the heart attack I'm getting when I turn 85. I tasted every drop of oil that was soaked the cronuts and the beef patty from the fryer. Elvis Burger, you won the award for the most disgusting thing I ate in 2015. Do I regret it? A little. Was it good? Kinda. Would I do it again? Probably not, I clogged enough arteries already. P.S. They also have a ridiculously long wait for brunch, I ended up getting take away. This place is kind of overhyped, given it's predictable location (the hipster neighborhood of Sydney.)

We did a package for a three course meal and so they give you the menu and tell you which groups of food you can pick one of each of. I had a Byron Bay pork belly appetizer with roumolaude with an Asian coleslaw type thing is one of my appetizers. My husband had the. Morton Bay bug broccoli bisque. This is not a soup, but you are giving a little serving dish of the bisque to pour on as much as you'd like on your bug. lol for our main entrées, my husband had Heramassa Kingfish that he said was light and very yummy. I had the duck dish as that's one of my favorite meals. I can't say that this was cooked the way I tend to like my duck, which is more pink in it. It was overcooked . T It was chewy and there wasn't enough sauce, which would've helped. Last but at least we both had desserts and they were both fantastic! He had the lemon tart, mango meringue, and I had the Caramelia raspberry sponge cake. It was delicious! You can't beat the view from this restaurant and the service was very attentive and they were very friendly. The only thing I would say is they could update it inside a bit more. Maybe new carpet and furniture but all in all it was worth it. I think we paid $72 per person, so it wasn't cheap and then you still had to buy your alcohol (2 glasses of wine cost $51 ) which is pretty expensive, oysters were extra, side dishes were extra as well. I still give it a higher rating as opposed to a lower one. Great special evening place to go.!
