Such a gem for Bay Area sharpening services. I have 4 knives, and only 4 knives. One is very special to me. I took three Shun knives for sharpening; a pearing, a utility, and a santoku. The blades glisten like the edge is new. Cut was a joy when they were dull, greater still with the fresh edgr offered by The Sharp Brothers. I took my 11" sashimi Kikuichi for sharpening. I have a small multi-tool pocket knife that I've been using 2017 and was so blunt it couldn't draw blood. I've tried sharpening it myself using a Victorinox knife sharpener, but that dulled it even more (because of my lack of expertise, no fault of the equipment). I gave up and just dealt with having a blunt pocket knife because, hey, the scissors on the multi-tool could be a knife in a pinch. I decided this past week to get over that hump of inaction and just look for a person with the skills to just sharpen my knife, who, if it were conscious, would agree that it's long past due! A quick Google search and online appointment later, I found myself in a hilly part of Oakland. I noticed a man standing on the sidewalk while I was trying to parallel park on a somewhat crowded street. After I finished, he and I gave each other the look and knew we were on the same page. He chuckled to himself when I showed him the single, small blade I wanted sharpened. He said he'd get it done in 5-10 minutes. I walked around the neighborhood for 12-17 mins before loitering in front of his place. After I checked my phone, I realized he had already finished 8-10 earlier and texted me to return! He came out and the grand total was $5, which I found agreeable and fair. It's very clear that he likes the work because, when I was speaking to him about how to sharpen my pocket knife better in the future, his eyes glowed up as he started to talk shop. I really enjoy the passion people have about their work, especially when they have that glint in their eyes as someone gets them to talk about it. Great, easy sharpening! I scheduled a 30 minute drop-off and Austin met me out front, took the knives and turned them around in under 15. They're cutting beautifully. I also love the "prescription" card included, that notes a few things to be aware of that can harm your knives (cutting on certain surfaces, leaving submerged in water, etc.) Easy to pay via Venmo and great pricing. Austin came to our house for the $100 minimum. He did 11 high quality knives and an Ax. We cook a ton and have never really known how to properly care for our high end knives. We really destroyed the edges with other crappy sharpeners. We now know what a very high quality even edge looks like. Austin trained under one of the top knife sharpeners in the world and the edge he put on our knives is insane and better than when they were new. He has been doing this for 17 years but doesn't look older than 30. Huge props for young artists like this in Oakland. He was so good and such a nice guy I felt I was robbing him by only giving $100 so gave him $125. I will only use my steel once a week with only two light swipes a sides at a 15 degree angle to keep that edge and probably bring him back once a year. read more

My 15 year old Tramontina knife set was way overdue for a sharpening. I booked an appointment to drop off at their shop through their website with two days notice. A nice fella collected the knives and I waited in the car. Fifteen minutes later, knives are done! Fast, friendly and SHARP! You can find the Sharp Brothers at local farmers' markets, or make an appointment at their shop. I did the latter, and was met out front by Austin right on time. 15 minutes later, I left with expertly sharpened knives, new cardboard sheaths to replace the paper wraps I'd made for the trip to the shop, and a few tips on knife care. I'd never had my knives professionally sharpened, and it's an entirely different experience than doing it myself (i.e., they actually got sharpened). All of the knives feel brand new. The serrated bread knife - my favorite, but don't tell the other knives - easily cuts through crusty sourdough without destroying the slice in the process. The chef's knife makes quick work of meats and vegetables, and the paring knives cut more precisely than ever. Dull knife = dull life, don't let it happen to you! read more

I took my knives to the Grand Lake farmers market to get sharpened, including my Global and a Shun, and they've all come back duller than they were beforehand. A couple of them somehow have burrs. All of them struggled to cut through an onion without a lot of pressure. It doesn't seem like there was much effort to keep a consistent angle on both sides of the place either. read more

I took my Shuns and Miyabis to them. After they were done, my knives were so sharp that they actually dug into cutting boards. I had to be careful to put a wet towel under the board to keep it from sliding away. These guys know how to handle high-end knives. They use a proper wheel and then hone the knife to an atomic-level tip. Three high-end knives didn't even come to $30 and they were done in less than 10 minutes. Really, really pleased with the sharpening of my knifes from the Sharp Brothers. I've had my set for about 10 years now and have had them sharpened once every year and a half or so and this was by far the best they've ever come out. Perfect blades, they got out any light pitting or tiny chips, and were very quick- about 20 minutes or so for 6 blades. Nice, friendly guys at the tent in Jack London too. They're so good they make me want to prepare and cook even more. I've gone to other local shops in Oakland, an expensive specialty Japanese knife shop in NYC, and a few other places that were rated well but none have turned out as well as this round at the Sharp Brothers. The cash-only policy is the only thing I could ding them for, but since they're at a Farmer's Market it gets a pass. read more

Strange, I thought I reviewed these folks a while ago. I've taken knives and other blades to Austin several times and always wind up very very happy. Recently I brought him a blade from a specialized paper cutting machine. He told me he had never sharpened a blade of that type before but didn't think he would have a problem. He polished a few little chips out of the edge and it's now razor sharp. This service is excellent, punctual, polite and reasonably priced. I will be back again and again. read more
