My fellow drinkers seemed to be very accommodating when it came to making room for strangers at their tables. There are no pumps, the beer is dispensed from barrels in a side room. The person behind the bar was very friendly (especially as I had wandered behind the bar myself) and (once I had slunk round to the correct side of the counter) served me Summa That (the name of the beer, from the Branscombe brewery). A good pub anytime, but another one that must be even better in the summer when you can take your drink outside. The building dates from the 16th century and the pub has been run by the same family since the late 19th century.

The pub is CAMRA (campaign for real ale) recommended and also has a royal seal of approval with the Queen visiting the pub back in the late 90's.

The range of beers is limited and the food is average. The downstairs bar is usually busy Friday/Saturday nights and midweek there are usually student drinks promotions. The decor is stereotypically tacky Australian with a crocodile by the front door (not real obviously). I went in there with an Australian mate recently, he had never been to a Walkabout before and he thought it was hilarious. He also didn't know Fosters was an 'Australian' lager as he has never seen it in Sydney, same with XXXX.

For us we had the complete opposition experience. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Food and drinks came out fast. The Thorverton Arms had three beers on cask and few beers of tap. I had a pint of the Otter Amber (cask), the Tribute Pale Ale (cask) and the Carlsberg Lager (draft). The food was much better than I expected. They had their main menu and specials for the day. The food was very fresh and the portions were huge. As the only place to sit down and eat in Thorverton, the Thorverton Arms does a great job and I highly recommend it.

This is your brand new place with a whole mixture of beers from the UK and abroad. I enjoyed Kubla Brewery Rise From cask and Thornbridge Chiron from keg. My favourite from the visit though was Wild Beer Fresh, also on keg. I've had a couple of 'Wild' beers recently and they are really good. The guys running the place are really nice chaps and share a love of the beer! They have some room out back which they're going to turn into some outside drinking terrain.
