The setting is tasteful and elegant, nothing fancy but nice. The bulk of the seating is upstairs. The menu is well sized; not overwhelming. A nice "About" story is printed inside the menu, introducing you to the players and bringing a nice personal touch to the experience. I ordered the duck confit with black pudding and bacon lardons and jus starter and the lamb rump with couscous for the main. For the wine I ordered a glass of local red wine (from Kenton winery down the road), which surprised me as well. Very drinkable and matched my meal nicely. A taste of a potato and garlic with truffle oil soup (biche?) was served while I waited and my taste buds were raring to go. The duck confit with black pudding was like an umami explosion in my head - utterly delicious. I was sad to see it end. The lamb rump, which was served with a sage infused jus, was even better. This was by far the best meal I'd had in Exeter (and one of the best in the UK). After discussing the jus with Ryan, the owner, he brought out a small bowl for me to dunk my bread. Unpretentiousness scores high in my book. That bordered on awesomeness. To finish I ordered the cheese platter and another glass of wine. Ryan introduced each cheese to me (all locally produced) and as I was the last customer in the restaurant we chatted about a few things. A good host, new to the trade with an excellent product. I enjoyed it so much I felt compelled to write a review (which I don't do often). Seriously, if you live in Exeter or are simply visiting, make this one of your destinations.

This is a small and intimate venue, with a holding area that is perfect to enjoy an aperitif before stepping up a few stairs into the main restaurant to eat. The pizza was yum. From what I could tell, I think they nailed the toppings, but I set the crust aside. Lastly, the staff there were great. Somehow I had a separate stomach for chocolate so we managed to eat most of it. The chocolate was a bit too runny, but it tasted good. You make your toast from a selection of breads using a toaster right at your table (so you control how dark the toast is and it's perfectly hot and fresh) There are various options for breakfast depending on the time of day. As another reviewer says, pancakes are made by machine - this takes time, yes, but it's novel and probably makes things easier operationally. The pancakes are small but they're tasty and there are lots of sauces you can top them with. The cooked breakfast items are all good quality - a choice of two types of sausage, fried eggs, hash browns, mushrooms etc. There is an option to boil your own eggs but I haven't tried this. I would say the full cooked breakfast offers the best value. My main criticisms would be you can pay for unlimited hot or cold drinks, but to have both hot and cold you'd have to pay twice, and certain items are on show early in the morning but not available on the early bird price point, so the staff have to police what you go for which can feel uncomfortable. It's very busy on a weekend so if you prefer a quieter atmosphere I'd recommend going on a weekday if you can.

The place was almost full so we asked when we could eat and the cheerful, polite and helpful assistant told us 'fifteen to twenty minutes'. we were shown to our cosy table for two seventeen minutes later. Busy means 'good' in the dining out business I guess. The 'mission' of the Harvester chain is presumably the provision of a good dining experience at the best possible price for the customer. This was certainly achieved here yesterday by, I guess, more than a hundred diners. We tucked into our fresh, crunchy salad (eat as much as you want, no charge for this) and before we had quite finished that our 'Earlybird' fish and chips, with trimmings, arrived. I had the smaller size option of this meal but the fish was still 8" long. Total cost of our meal for two with a drink was under £14. Be fair ! The decor and ambiance were cosy, warm and friendly Car parking is adjacent and free. Easy disabled access with ramps. Not only was a complete list of ingredients available for all food items but there is a calorie count published for every meal in the menu. Where else would you find that ? There appears to have been a staff or management problem in this Harvester about a year ago but following some changes everything is now very professional and good. Harvester are apparently well on top of staffing issues. A young boy on the next table to us accidently knocked his dinner off the table. Hardly before it hit the floor the Assistant Manager was on hand saying 'no problem I will get you another dinner, no charge mum', and so she did within five minutes. Impressive and kind. Provided you are prepared to wait a few minutes for a table on a busy evening you can confidently expect to have a good dining experience at little more than a 'take away' price at this Harvester.
