Pastrami on Rye Smoked pastrami, caramelized onions, sauerkraut, bacon jam, thousand island dressing, Swiss cheese on marbled rye. I had "The Kitchen Sink" omelette, with a homemade biscuit as my "toast" option. The atmosphere is open and light, there's free WiFi, and the staff were all so friendly and helpful. I needed to take some of the omelette home, and their "to-go" box is made of paper (cardboard type material?), and I was soooo glad it was NOT styrofoam! I'm visiting family, so I flew to Iowa... but the cafe is just a couple miles off Interstate 80, for hungry road warriors. read more

This was the most amazing coffee shop we stopped at on our drive from california to boston. Heidi ringing us up was the most caring kind woman ever. I just wanted to stay all day and chat with her. Super cute place! They were busy too when we got there. My husband and I shared an omelet for lunch and it was very good. I highly recommend the black raspberry jam if you're getting toast. It's out of Kalona. Everyone there was extremely friendly too. I do recommend paying in cash and don't wait too late in the day during summer if you want food as it gets too hot in the kitchen and then they can only serve drinks. They also have specialty coffee and tea so this is my kind of place. Highly recommend. read more

While visiting the President Herbert Hoover Museum, we asked a NP Ranger for suggestions for lunch. She quickly recommended The Serving Cafe. It was only 2 blocks away and, as we like supporting local businesses, we decided to give it a try. What a great experience! Extremely friendly staff-everyone! My wife and I both ordered a Monte Christo and it tasted great. Theirs is made with the jam on the inside and comes with a bag of kettle chips. The bread is not thick and we like it sandwich bread size. We topped our meal off by sharing a delicious oatmeal/M&M cookie. While talking with the owner we discovered she had just opened two months ago. Both my wife and I recommend you give this cafe a try. Lots of unhappy thoughts. Grill broken no griddle items. Ordered grilled cheese child's came bent. What would a waitress who cares serve a burnt sandwich to some? Beyond me. I'm sure no one in there would eat one or be ok with one served to their family. Avocado in Cobb salad tasted acidic? This was our second time eating here. The first time was absolutely delicious. The local families that staff the dining room are friendly and very efficient I visited at 9:30 on a Friday morning and the room was bustling but the staff coped with the crowd sweetly! Since it was breakfast time (I'm not a farmer and do not get up with the chickens) I ordered my favorite: sausage gravy over buttermilk biscuits The order was ample and delicious! We were driving across the country and looking for a place to eat lunch. This little cafe was perfect. The food was delicious, service was cheerful and good, and a clean restroom. We were early enough to easily get a table but they all filled up throughout our lunchtime. The CBR-- chicken and cheese on a croissant was excellent. The grownup grilled cheese was very good, although a bit sweet with the bacon jam. Guava lemonade was also delicious. It is next to the Herbert Hoover National Historic Site which was a pretty park to walk around after lunch with interesting history. read more

My husband and I visited here recently. The food was very flavorful and unique. We had the Monte Cristo and the CBR - both were tasty sandwiches. The guava berry lemonade was wonderful and not too sweet. And the chocolate chip cookie was one of the best ever. With a short walk to a bench in the Herbert Hoover Park, it was a special lunch time.
