A Sunday - Monday stay. We celebrated Valentine's the first Sunday-Monday in March in hopes of having the Island to ourselves. Instead of staying at the big hotel on The Strand, we decided to try Schaefer Haus. With two homes to select from, we selected what is Room 2 in the main haus. It is beautiful and filled with antique furnishings. Tammy and the rest of the staff are lovely. Tammy filled us in on the Happy Hour and Breakfast details and showed us our room; what is listed as the Freiberg (and now known as the Laura or Room2.) The room is comfortable. The bathroom includes a claw foot tub with shower head. There are three rooms available on the second floor and two on the third. Okay, here we go. (Let me first say, we have every intention of staying here again.) We arrived early. When we were shown our room, Room 1 and 3 were being cleaned and unoccupied. I was delighted at the idea of having the Haus to ourselves. Within an hour, both rooms were filled, as well as the third floor. As sound travels, I quickly realized there were some flaws in privacy. For instance, there is a second door in the bathroom that is right by the toilet. If opened, it would be into the space at the top of the stairs on the second floor shared by the three rooms. There is a gap at the base of the door that you could pass a stack of two magazines under. On the opposite side of the toilet is the window that is used to gain access to the private balcony. Only a sheer black curtain provides coverage from the two houses across the street. After dark, I turned the bathroom lights off and used the romantic amount of light that comes in through that door I was speaking of earlier. The actual bathroom door in no way secures to the door frame. That said, it stayed closed anytime one of us was depending on privacy. Let's talk sound. Around 2AM, Room 1 or 3 decided it was time to listen to some soothing sounds of Trip-House at volume 11. Okay. This did not wake me, but it woke the husband. However, around 3AM, what sounded like a man and woman began screaming violently at one another. This did wake me with deep concern. Ten minutes later - all quiet. We found out after breakfast, the music was coming from Room 1. Lastly, security. There is a tiny knob on Room 2 that acts as a dead bolt. Lock it! At least twice during the night someone vigorously checked our room doorknob as if they were confused about which room was theirs. Monday morning, breakfast was delicious. While there were no mimosas (which are available on Saturday and Sunday,) the quiche was fantastic and the bacon crisp! Coffee, water, juice, and milk were also available. Schaefer Haus should definitely be on your list for a stay on The Strand! read more

This house is perfect for a weekend getaway and deserves more recognition. Tammy is an amazing host and the staff here is very accommodating to every guest's needs. Beware: Holes and stains on bed sheets, mildewed shower curtain, dirty towels, TERRIBLY OLD mattress and flat pillows, pictures fallen off walls, splattered something on bathroom wall, tape holding up light fixtures. We only stayed the first night bc it was later in the day when we checked in. We didn't stay the second night. The manger, Tammy, never called us back about the room, but a nice employee did come up the morning we left and agreed the room was unacceptable and we would get a refund. But we never did bc Tammy told Booking.com they "tried to make it right" (which wasn't the case) and she has the final word I guess? We got a cheaper room at a The Galvez Hotel, which was right on the water and super nice. Don't fall for this trap. read more

Last summer we spent 4 day at the Schaefer Haus. We loved the room and the breakfast...but what we enjoyed the most was the staff. We've already spoken to Schaefer about booking for this years Dickens On The Strand. Can't wait!! read more

We stayed for 2 nights to celebrate our daughters 7th birthday instead of having a kid party. It was a perfect place to stay! Breakfast was lovely, and our daughter was surprised by the B&B staff with a chocolate cake, a birthday crown, sash and ribbon, a birthday card, and a light up "happy birthday" table decoration. None of this was requested by us. We were able to walk to the strand, and were super close for a day trip to play at the beach. Our daughter felt like a Queen getting to stay on and island in a mansion. I would highly recommend a stay at this unique property. There is nothing cookie cutter about it! read more

My husband and I had a perfect experience at the Schaefer Haus! Tammy, our wonderful hostess, made sure everything was wonderful! We stayed in the Laura room, and everything from the perfect sheets and comforter, to the clawfoot tub (even the water pressure was great, which is unusual for older homes), the beautiful large room with balcony, the happy hour with tons of wine, cheese and crackers, the advice on where to go in town, the staff that couldn't have been more attentive, the complimentary excellent-abundant-delicious breakfast, and the feeling of family. I have to say how clean everything was too! It is thrilling that we can experience the beautiful history of Galveston by staying in one of the old, historic homes. Feeling history in this way, made us appreciate all of the beauty this seaport town has to offer. We really loved the pride that the staff has for the home. One of them told us about helping to update it and having to remove 6 layers of wallpaper and cloth. But, even updated, it is appointed with an old-world feel and decorations. Wifey and I celebrated our 49th anniversary in Galveston at the Schaefer Haus. Tammy Greeted us when we arrived for the 3 day weekend. She also placed a bottle of Champaign, glasses, and a Cake in our room on the second floor, garnished with Rose Petals. It was a very thoughtful addition. We really enjoyed our stay in this spacious room #1 called Lyndsay I think. There was also a crystal bottle of filtered water on the table with two glasses for it. We loved the set up in the guest reception area every night including a nice selection of adult beverages and cheeses and crackers. read more

Beautiful historic home near The Strand. My husband and I came down the night before for our cruise embarking the next day. We wanted to stay somewhere a little nicer as it was our anniversary week. We went to the blue house next door by mistake. We walked in and said "hello" a few times and no one answered. We finally called the number and was told it was the house next door. I didn't check my email they sent that day that gave instructions on where to check in. We were glad as it were excited to stay in a beautiful home. The service was great. We checked in at the parlor area that served as the happy hour area. I was a little creeped out at this couple who were just sitting there and not talking, and staring. The room was nice and had a claw foot tub. We were at the very top so needless to say we got exercise every time we left the room. We walked to the Strand which was lovely to be able to walk and not waste gas. The breakfast the next morning was wonderful and the service was A+. I had heard about the pancakes they have served before and inquired about them. The server was willing to make some just for me, but I declined because I didn't want to be an inconvenience. The fact that she wanted to made feel special. We stayed here for something nicer for our anniversary, but I would stay here again for any time we are here! read more

My boyfriend and I came to Galveston to celebrate 4th of July. We opted to try a bed-and-breakfast versus a traditional hotel such as a Motel 6 or something similar. We are so glad that we did! I would recommend eye shades if you plan on sleeping in due to curtains are not lined. So light comes in as early as 6am and is quite bright by 7am. But that is a minor complaint and just something that we will be mindful of for our next trip. We are definitely looking forward to returning again very soon. We will make all attempts to stay at Schaefer Haus for all future trips to the Galveston area! Go stay at a Hotel.... They don't serve breakfast, flies all over in the kitchen area... Some rooms don't have working A/C. The worst problem is BUGS! This is the cutest place with the friendliest owner and staff! We kept calling it a hidden gem! We were welcomed and told about the properties and shown how the locks work. We were also invited to have wine in the common area. It was so cute and had so much history. The room was huge and at a great price! We stayed in their second house, the mansion on the corner. Both houses are gorgeous and offer the same amenities. The rooms have chandeliers and really kept the historical charm, but there was all of the modern amenities, like tv. Downstairs, there is a wine and coffee bar with a Keurig. There was even a bottle of water in the room and a water dispenser in the hallway. Our room was actually in a movie, Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler." There is not a parking lot, but there was plenty of street parking. It is not right along the beach, but is a close Uber ride to the sea wall bars ($6). It's in walking distance of the downtown restaurants. We will definitely come again, and may do a group to stay in the larger suite, sometime! read more

This is a well located b&b in the historic district within easy walking distance to many good restaurants. Lots of antiques plus comfortable rooms and beds plus rooms to gather in to relax and visit. Tammy is the host and she makes every effort to make your stay special. Our only disappointment was that we weren't informed that they stopped serving breakfast on Mondays and Tuesdays so even though they had breakfast posted as 8:30-10 am, we had to suddenly fend for ourselves. Others were also waiting for breakfast so it wasn't just us. Thankfully we knew of a place nearby - the Sunflower Cafe, but those unfamiliar with the area or trying to get to the airport on a schedule would have a challenge. This may be new policy but it's better to inform your guests, and also not charge as much if you don't serve breakfast as expected. Otherwise a lovely place! read more

A TREASURE! I've spent most of my life traveling. I've seen most of the globe and have stayed in some pretty amazing places, but this? This took my breath away. The home and room exceeded our expectations to the point I thought it couldn't be real. Gorgeous house, ridiculously clean and beautiful room that seemed more like traveling back in time to some halcyon bygone era than a simple overnight stay. The beds and pillows are so comfortable they should be listed as controlled substances. Our host was delightful, friendly and paid attention to details I wouldn't have even thought of. Stayed two nights. Great place to stay. Very close to The Strand and other venues. Has the feel of the Old Days of Galveston without giving up todays amenities. DO NOT BOOK THIS PLACE! I booked the whole house for my wedding and regret it! The staff was not good at communicating. They were rude! There are bugs everywhere! No A/C in room 6 and they said they would not charge us for that room but NEVER received a refund!! The staff made the bride cry while she was getting her make up done for her wedding day!! They do not have breakfast!! They are shady!! Do not stay here or book this house for your wedding! It was beautiful but the staff ruined it along with the bugs and no a/c. The Schaefer Haus was by far the best accommodation I've received at a hotel/bed and breakfast. Paula, Shannon, and Tammy were so kind with a genuine spirit that made you feel right at home. Paula and Shannon checked on us throughout our dining time, asking if we wanted more mimosas, wanted the music turned on when we were sitting on the porch, and in general, If there was anything we needed to make our time here pleasant. I can't recommend this place enough. My friend and I already decided that every beach weekend getaway we will be staying at the Schaefer Haus. We stayed here before we left on our cruise. We had such a great time. The house and whole neighborhood was beautiful and safe. Tammy greeted us the moment we walked in the door with a friendly smile. It was my birthday along with several other guests and they whole staff sang happy birthday to us. Requested and received rate for booking all rooms of both houses for wedding party; 1 room had inadequate AC couple had to find alternative arrangements. 1 room was booked at time of booking, with Tammy stating she knew the couple and would request if they could reschedule, we even offered to pay for other couples accommodations; Tammy never informed couple; then allowed a 2nd room to be booked. When I inquired about what I was paying for, Tammy was very defensive and said she didn't charge me for the two rooms booked, but could not give me a per room cost; she stated we were given a special rate and that I was given a credit for the room not usable... which, no surprise, no refund or credit from the original quote; I actually paid more. And of course no receipt of service. Guests complained of spiders, roaches, and flies. No breakfast or afternoon snacks as promoted, apparently due to Fire Marshal shutting down kitchen, but in several communications prior to our stay, Tammy never mentioned until we arrived. The person who came to clean on Saturday morning did a poor job, she was very rude and condescending to bride's sister; situation escalated and then Tammy stormed the bride while she was getting ready and scolded her and threatened to have her sister removed. Needless to say, very unpleasant. Kitchen closed, and no means for guests to have access to kitchen in main house, no cleaning supplies, drinking water left on counter in 2nd house had algae growing. Overall house has nostalgic charm, but hostess and whoever she had clean were unprofessional and rude. Would not recommend. read more
