This is a great historic property with a lot of character and plenty to offer. The bar has an excellent atmosphere and serves great drinks, though they are definitely on the pricey side. The rooms are a bit dated and on the smaller side, but they were clean and the beds were comfortable, which made for a pleasant stay overall. The location is hard to beat -- directly across from the beach and within walking distance of several good food options. I recently stayed at Grand Galvez and was disappointed with the arrival and check-in experience. When we arrived, no one greeted us or offered assistance with our luggage. Several staff members appeared to ignore us. After waiting for a while, a woman in the valet booth quietly spoke to another attendant, and only then were we asked if we needed help. The guest room was also much smaller than expected and felt cramped, more like a box than a comfortable hotel room. As a Marriott Bonvoy member, I expected at least some acknowledgment of my loyalty status. During check-in, I asked whether my Marriott Bonvoy account was attached to the reservation. The front desk agent simply said, "Yes, I see it," and that was the full extent of the acknowledgment. Given the Grand Galvez's reputation and room rates, I expected a much warmer welcome and a more attentive level of service. read more

the rooms are tiny and really noisy, the elevators are slow and always packed and the breakfast is mediocre. I cant say I loved this hotel. I guess we wanted to see the beach and the downtown area and the historic aspect of the hotel is nice. The only saving grace was the Christmas decoration, those were really beautiful. read more

Did not enjoy this hotel. Despite a recent so-called renovation, the quality of the rooms is poor. The beds are old, the air conditioning doesn't cool the room, which smells, and the picture shows the cheap one piece shower unit, which is installed too low. I actually had one of these installed in a house I bought from a flipper; a decent plumber immediately said it had to go. I enjoyed the staff and the on-site coffee bar, but you're overpaying for location and reputation. Take a walk through the lobby when you're in Galveston, it is beautiful, but stay somewhere else. read more

Came to stay overnight for a bday celebration. When you pull up there is valet for 35, a garage for 18 or street parking for free. When you walk in the lobby is sooooo nice. They have upscale decorations. Check in was easy. We made it in the room and it was nice and clean. For the pricing I expected a little more but it was still okay. Stayed M-Th over spring break. Upgraded to beach view. Used valet parking. All the gentlemen were kind. Hotel lobby is beautiful and staff are helpful. Room was wonderful and clean. Comfy bed. Shower was amazing but took a hot minute to figure out buttons. So wish bath towels were larger. Was worried it would be bright in the morning with the huge windows but the curtains were excellent. Loved the little coffee place. Gym had enough things to get a good workout. Loved the towels and fresh fruit. Did not use the pool but it was very large and had a nice hot tub. Oh, I did have some stains on the sheets that were old and the maid took care of it. I will review bar and restaurant on the other yelp specifically for that. Both were great. We usually stay at the Tremont but this was a nice change and loved the views. Oh we did use the hotel bikes and had a nice ride on the Seawall. read more

1/17/2026: We went for a drink at the bar, so I don't have any information about the rooms themselves. However, my friend and I walked the lobby to see the Queen of The Gulf. She is beautiful! 1911 and beautify remodeled over the years. The attention to detail is amazing. The lobby smelled lovely and the decor was phenomenal! She boasts large chandeliers in the hallways and bar area, a beautifully mosaic tiled entry, grand steps to the rooms, a bougie gift shop, and a restaurant called The Monarch. The landscaping is exquisite with tropical plants and a gorgeous fountain in the front lawn entrance. They offer valet parking. Our martinis were $29.00 each (before gratuity), but I think that was THE best martini I've ever had! We will be back, but next time, it will be for a room stay. I can't even imagine how gorgeous the rooms must be, and though this is only a bar review, I felt it necessary. There's no way this place doesn't extend their service and beauty to the rooms. Took a mini staycation after LDW during the week. Dinner at the bar. Nice glass of wine. They have a limited bar food menu. Was pleasantly surprised with the wings. Good flavor/texture. Fries were supposed to be truffle Parmesan, but a little light on the truffle flavor. Would have been fine with just Parmesan fries. Room was clean and updated. Pool is always relaxing. I know they can be understaffed at times, but would have liked someone coming around for drink orders. I was kind of far from the bar so ended up not getting up to get anything. read more

We had an amazing stay from beginning to end. Now, it was Mardi Gras which blocked off the Seawall bc of the parades but once we got to the Galvez, we walked everywhere. The valet service was efficient. The front desk was welcoming and the young lady helping us made sure we had a nice room on the 5th floor for my granddaughter's birthday trip. The rooms are small, but well designed. The shower was state of the art. The girls enjoyed the pool and hot tub! Our view of the ocean was perfect! Definitely a GRAND time! read more

LOVE this place! Been coming here at least twice a year for over 20 years. It's a LOT more pricey than it used to be but the upgrades to reflect the original history are unparalleled. We recently stayed here for Memorial Day weekend. We wanted a quick trip to Galveston with direct beach access. Galvez delivered! The hotel is historic as it's been built since 1911, it has been renovated but still keeps its old time charm. They have a private beach area that they have chairs and umbrellas set up for hotel guests. Also, they have a decent sized pool if you're tired of the waves. They have plenty of wash off stations for your sandy feet before entering back on the property. Inside it is super classy from the hallways to the chandeliers. The rooms are small but what do you expect from a building over 100 years old. For as many times as I've been to Galveston this hotel made it feel like somewhere else. Highly recommend just for the location and convenience. It is also walking distance to pleasure pier. read more

The queen of the Gulf is one of the top five hotels in Metro Houston / Galveston. It is the perfect spot for Houston folk to get away for a night or two and transport us back to a simple time. It is also a great meeting or celebration location. The hotel was retrovated to old style splendor two years ago and looks amazing! Good timing as they recently filmed an episode of 1923 here, not too long ago. The Galvez is authentic and that can't be bought. The restaurant, pool and bar are great. Have fun! read more

Stayed at a friend's new place over the weekend which happened to be walking distance to the Galvez, so we had to stop in for happy hour at the beautiful bar! The drinks were great but our favorite part was the pianist playing all the best songs! He was engaging with the audience and singing along and made it that much more fun. Wine was more reasonable between $10-$14 a glass. Our service was super friendly and quick. There is free street parking next to the hotel. Sept. 2025 I had a horrible experience with a third party vendor the Galvez contracted . The hotel manager did not return phone calls or an email. From unfortunate first hand experience, it appears the Galvez cares more about vendors than the safety and well being of guests. Sad to see the hotel managed this way. read more

Stayed at Grand Galvez for a short summer getaway, and it was such a wonderful experience! The rooms were clean, cozy, and comfortable.. perfect for relaxing after a busy day. Funny enough, we unknowingly got booked next to the "haunted" Room 501, but I slept like a log in 503 lol! I was in town for a Royal Caribbean ship inspection (I'm a travel agent), but I brought my little family along so they could enjoy a quick trip too. The location was great.. they were able to walk to the Pleasure Pier, and my husband treated himself to the Sunday brunch while I was on the ship. He said it was amazing! The valet service was smooth and efficient, and the staff was incredibly friendly. The property itself is stunning.. classic charm mixed with beautiful, modern touches. We also rented a beach cabana with umbrellas and chairs, exclusively for hotel guests, and it was such a treat. The staff took great care of us, bringing out truffle fries, fresh fruit, and a couple of cocktails right to our chairs. This was truly a memorable stay .. from the property and service to the little details that made everything special. I had a marvelous time here and will definitely be back! read more

Here's the deal: The Grand Galvez is not only the Queen of the Gulf, it's the Queen of All Inns -- and worthy of every star that one could give. We came for a night to celebrate our 30th anniversary. Funny thing, our plans eventually took us to Fiji; then we decided on a cruise out of Miami; and finally, we thought that hanging out here and playing cribbage would be totally worthy of a 30-year celebration. This place is decked out. Period. From the crown molding to the fabric wallpaper and accoutrements throughout. It has been around for a long time (even has a historical marker), and it is as swanky as any Ritz Carlton or Grand Kempinksi I've ever had the pleasure of staying at. In addition to the nice digs, the service is spectacular. Sure, it's not cheap. But it's worth every penny, and then some. read more

We recently stayed at Hotel Galvez in Galveston and unfortunately had a disappointing experience. During our stay, there was a strong smell of marijuana coming through the AC vents in our room. This was especially concerning because my wife is pregnant, and we were trying to avoid any exposure to smoke. To the hotel's credit, we did report the issue, and management responded by going up to the floors to investigate. They were able to locate the guests who were smoking, which we appreciated. However, the smell had already impacted our stay, and it made it difficult for us to feel comfortable in the room. We ended up having to leave the room at times just to get fresh air, including going down early in the morning to avoid the smell. While the property itself is beautiful and the staff did make an effort to address the situation, the overall experience was affected by this issue. We hope the hotel takes stronger preventative measures in the future to ensure a more comfortable and safe environment for all guests. read more

Pros: Beautiful hotel and perfect location. Beds were comfy, rooms very clean. Blessed with early check-in -- huge plus! Club GiGi is a fun touch (though drinks are a bit limited). Checkout was smooth, and the young woman who helped me (wish I caught her name, maybe Dawn?) was fantastic and friendly. Cons: Check-in staff was nice, but service in between check-in and checkout felt short and unfriendly. Aroma360 scent is overwhelming -- if you have allergies, beware. It's cranked up so strong I found myself testing how long I could hold my breath walking through the lobby. Housekeeping schedule was the biggest frustration: We requested service Sunday morning before leaving so they could make sure it was on the route. Returned before 2 PM -- still not done. Waited it out at the pool and hotel bar -- room finally ready at 5 PM. To top it off, we were left with one bath towel, a handful of smaller towels/washcloths, and dirty glasses still in the room. Mentioned it at checkout, and the staff said they'd "look into it." Bottom line: Gorgeous property, great beds, overall a good time -- but be prepared for super-strong lobby scents and a less-than-ideal housekeeping schedule. Room Info: We stayed in Room 559. Heads up -- the bathroom counter corner sticks out (watch your hip when going potty!) and the shower door doesn't like to stay closed. Could be the door... could be the ghost. This is a beautiful property. Definitely the place for gorgeous wedding photos. It is off season, so it was very quiet, the pool bar was closed, and the restaurant menu was pared down a bit. The property is historic Galveston, over 100 years old, but nicely refreshed, and now part of the Marriott BonVoy group. It is a bit pricey, so I would probably save this for a special occasion. We really enjoyed our stay, and I will absolutely come back "in season" and see what the place is like when everything is lively and open. read more

We stayed at the Grand Galvez for a quick family summer vacation and were overall pleased with the experience. We have 2 kids, 1 is 8yrs old and the other is 3yrs. At first I was very nervous about how kid friendly the hotel was going to be as it has a very elegant/fancy feel. The Rooms: The rooms are quite small but cute. We had a large and very strange shower head contraption that was very challenging to use and had terrible water pressure. Beds were comfy and housekeeping was so kind and accommodating. Poor Area: The pool area is nice but they refused to let my kiddos bring their water bottles in. While I understand not letting adults bring Stanley's and Yetis, I thought it was a little over the top to not allow their bottles of water. Food Options: The restaurant in the hotel is cute but expensive and feels fancy so if you want quick/kid friendly breakfast you are limited to muffins from the coffee shop. (The muffins were house made and very delicious but after two days we wanted something more). The Beach: I really liked having access to a private beach with loungers, umbrellas, and towels. I was disappointed that the little food shack on the beach wasn't opened and I think the hotel could do a better job combing the beach for junk before guests come out. (We found dirty underwear and lots of trash while we were on the beach.) Overall: The hotel staff were so nice and accommodating and there were tons of families staying on property so I can say confidently that you won't be alone if you stay as a family but be aware that the resort really isn't kid centric in nature. I did not stay at the Grand Galvaz so I can't rate the rooms or service, but I did visit the hotel bar this past weekend so this review is for the bar. The lobby of the hotel was gorgeous! The bar was well situated off the lobby with a partial view from cloudy/dirty windows to the ocean. I ordered one of my favorite cocktails (The Last Word) and an appetizer recommended by the bartenders of fried green tomatoes. The tomatoes were some of the best friend green tomatoes with well paired sauce that I've ever had. So good! The cocktail was not so perfect. I'm not sure the bartender was that practiced in making it because the taste was a bit off and she first put a lime slice instead of a maraschino cherry that they usually are made with, but it was drinkable. If I ever find myself back in Galveston, I would definitely go order those fried green tomatoes again! read more

Love love love the Grand Galvez! The Grand Galvez is absolutely stunning and the attention to detail is stellar. The lobby of the hotel and Peacock Alley simply transport you back in time! We had a wonderful quick getaway and could not have been happier with our choice. It was such a pleasant surprise! If you're a fan of Chinoiserie, like I am, you'll find the rooms and fabric wall paper swoon worthy! The hotel is meticulously maintained and our room was wonderful--overlooking the ocean. We loved relaxing by the pool and enjoying frosty beverages at the swim up bar. The pink and white chaise lounges and umbrellas are so cute! We ordered a delicious poolside lunch that was light & refreshing. Additionally, there are beautiful pink and white loungers and umbrellas across the street at their private beach area. You'll even find servers bringing food & drinks to your oceanfront loungers. We enjoyed morning coffee made by their barista, Ethan. Ethan was so incredibly friendly, polite and professional. We enjoyed our morning chat with him and appreciated his recommendations. He is such a hardworker! There is an adorable gift shop onsite and there I met Kelly. Kelly was very friendly and she showed me all of the adorable items for my granddaughters and fur babies! They have a great inventory of gift items, clothing and accessories. I even got the cutest dish towel with the Grand Galvez on it to commemorate our trip. Kelly shared with me the brief history of the hotel and it prompted me to take a look at the book in our room. Such a rich history. Incredibly interesting. The service overall was outstanding. So many staff members stopped what they were doing to open the door for me & wish me a good day. I lost count how many times that happened. It's just so rare to find nowadays. We'll definitely be back! The Grand Galvez is a gem and I hope to bring back my children and grandchildren. I've never stayed at the Grand Galvez, but I have been inside prior to the remodel. The hotel is absolutely gorgeous. The lobby is elegant and chic. Our room was standard size, but we had a great view of the water. We came down for Mardi Gras, but due to the weather, we did not get to attend our party or parades. Because the hotel had a nice bar and restaurant, we tried both. The drinks were good at the bar, and I loved the red chandeliers. We ordered the fried green tomatoes at the bar. They were large and good. The restaurant was also enjoyable. We had the Grand Galvez oysters as an appetizer, and I had the grilled shrimp arugula salad. We will be back again! read more

I had not been to Galveston before this visit, and I chose Hotel Galvez because of its history and grandeur, and I was not disappointed. The hotel was built in 1911 after the great 1900 hurricane that took many lives. It was part of Galvestons attempt to restore and rebuild as a resort destination. And they did it well with this hotel. It is grand! The vintage elevators, beautiful chandeliers, and the beautiful wood walls in the lobby and stairs make you feel like you have stepped back in time. There is an undeniable elegance to this hotel, and it is the only reason I would come back to Galveston again. I want to say this...I have stayed at many elegant hotels, to include the Ritz Carlton, and my experience here would definitely be at the top of my hotel experiences. Was it perfect, no, but it was everything I hoped it would be and it exceeded my expectations. It was charming, elegant, filled with history, very comfortable, welcoming, and it had a somewhat private beach where I could sit and enjoy the beauty of the Gulf. I have to start off by saying, I was so excited to stay here that I told my husband I didn't care about the price tag for a 4 night stay. The hotel is so very beautiful. But will I ever go back...doubtful. The service was lousy on the whole and the room was tiny. For almost $400 a night, I needed to be treated like royalty. We arrived and my husband informed the valet we were checking in. I then got out. The valet was looking at me confused. I said we are checking in. He ran to get a form, checked me in and then stood there. I mumbled under my breath, no worries...I'll get my own luggage. I grabbed a rolling trolley and loaded ALL my stuff while he watched and looked confused. As I finished and shut my trunk, he said "oh, do you want your suit bag?" He then grabbed the trolley and headed inside. I was rip shit pissed and told my husband to give him $5 out of the $20 we normally give a bellman. My husband looked shocked until I said..."I just loaded everything myself except your suit bag". The valet looked a bit disappointed at his tip, but I gave him the "you know what you did!!" Look. My fridge was plastic and held maybe two bottles of water if you're lucky. The door was open so I had to wait for it to cool until I put our cheese in there. There's a giant draw unit in the closet so you can't really hang up your clothes. That was fun. That on top of paper thin walls of our tiny room, where we could hear our neighbors children screaming at 7:00am....no thanks. We called the management twice before they asked our neighbor to calm their kids. Also, the pool ladies couldn't accurately tell me the time of the pool bar closing without getting snarky. I'm still not sure why "what time does your pool bar close"? Would cause looks, confusion and eventually a snarky tone. I'm so used to hotels smiling and saying how happy they are to serve and be there...which makes me smile and want to pass out tips. I guess they don't get how it works. I have been to vintage hotels where the room is tiny. I understand that when things are built has to do with space. However, to be with lousy service and a tiny room...all I could think of was the service and room I could've gotten for that price somewhere else. This was more expensive than the Omni Mokara Spa in San Antonio!!! If you just want beauty and nothing else. Enjoy. The hotel itself is beautiful. That's about it. My wife and I held our wedding on October 18th. To celebrate, we planned a special 3-day "pre-honeymoon" at the Hotel Galvez, a place that holds immense sentimental value for us. ​I proposed to my wife here on September 23rd of last year, and the service was so phenomenal that we were treated like royalty. The hotel has completely collapsed, and what was meant to be a joyful tradition is now a memory of stress and disappointment. ​With the exception of a few amazing employees, nearly every single touchpoint was a failure. ​Front Desk & Management: ​We were given incorrect information by the floor manager about the pool bar, causing us to miss the bartender. ​Not a single staff member (outside the bar/valet) smiled or congratulated us on our marriage. We felt like an inconvenience. ​When I tried to speak to the manager who gave us the incorrect information, she offered a half-hearted "I'll speak with people" and did nothing to make amends. ​On checkout day, we asked for the Assistant Manager of the hotel. We were forced to wait 1.5 hours for her to see us. She did absolutely nothing, promised a follow-up call, and we have heard nothing for 5 days. ​The Restaurant (The Galvez Bar & Grill): ​This was the most insulting experience. At dinner, we were seated at a dark booth with no light and were completely abandoned. ​After waiting 20 minutes without a single person acknowledging us, we were forced to get up and walk out. Only then did the hostess, who was on her phone, look up and offer a weak apology to our backs as we were already out the door. ​At lunch, the server was decent, but the kitchen was out of the key ingredients for the salad my wife ordered directly from their menu. ​The Spa (An Abysmal $480+ Cash Experience): ​The day we arrived, we were told a walk-in was "too much of a hassle" and to come back. ​We called down twice to schedule for the next day, clarifying our order. When we arrived, they still got the order wrong. ​They added a mandatory $80 tip to our $400 service. For what? We had to serve ourselves for 2 hours. ​The cold towels were not stocked. The razors were empty. We had to walk the halls in our robes to find someone to restock them. After our massage, they were empty again. ​My wife sat in the relaxation lounge for 40 minutes, but no one ever came to provide her neck warmer. She had to get up and dig through cabinets to find it herself. No one checked on us for 2 hours. I had to walk the halls in a robe just to find someone to refill our water and champagne. ​The facilities were broken. The steam room was dark with lights out, and one of the showers did not work. ​When we left, not one person at the front desk acknowledged us, said thank you, or asked how our service was. ​The Room & Billing: ​The room was cramped, a light in the bathroom was out, and the shower nozzles just spun endlessly, making it impossible to set a temperature. ​At checkout, they tried to charge us for 2 nights of valet when we only used 1 (and told them so). ​They added a surprise $25.00/night "facilities fee" (for the pool/bikes) that we were NEVER told about at check-in. This is an insulting and deceptive charge. ​We spent over $1,500 at this hotel for our post-wedding celebration and were treated as if we were a burden. My wife was so upset she begged me to go elsewhere for dinner. ​The only saving grace of our trip was BLVD Seafood. The manager, Yvonne, and her team were PHENOMENAL. They congratulated us, were incredibly attentive, and even comped us drinks. They apologized on behalf of the Hotel Galvez for our horrible experience. ​The only competent employees at the Galvez were Braden and Chase (the bartenders, Chase even remembered us from our proposal, as seen in our video!) and our masseuse, Miss Holly. They deserve to work at a better establishment. ​This experience was a disaster. We feel ripped off and are deeply saddened that a place so special to us has been ruined. We expect the hotel's corporate management to take extraordinary steps to make this right and address this catastrophic failure of service. Until such a resolution occurs, we are not likely to ever return. read more

I think it's so sad that this hotel has such low reviews because it is hands down one of the most beautiful hotels I've ever been to and I have always had an outstanding time visiting. It's gorgeous and I mean gorgeous. I'm in awe the whole time walking around. I absolutely love their pool. It has a bar that you can sit at in the pool. Their beds are extremely comfortable. I haven't dined in the hotel before minus the small espresso bar downstairs and I just love that coffee shop as well. Customer service there is pretty great, the only issue I had with them is that I was trying to book room 501 and was told that you can book it directly online but I never saw that option. I tried several different dates and never saw it. Last time we stayed here we were told we just had to request it. Not sure exactly but we still loved our room and we love staying here and totally recommend it. Parking is along the street unless you get valet. read more

One night here was one enough. The Queen of the Gulf is lovely to behold, but sadly has become complacent due to its popularity. Everything looks nice on the surface, but you are likely to be disappointed if you need anything beyond a a smile. Flickering light: "We will look into it." Didn't happen. Room smaller than advertised: "You are in one of the historic rooms, and they are smaller." Sink won't drain: "Have you tried bailing it out?" Bar food served cold: "You'll have better luck if you actually eat in the restaurant." Do you know what time my friend's cruise ship departs: "We no longer have the port schedule." Do come here for a fabulous shrimp cocktail and a drink at the beautiful bar. Don't come here if you are hoping for a night of relaxation, pampering, or a reasonably priced meal. read more

On Christmas night 2025, our two adult sons, my husband and I were so excited to have dinner at the Galvez. To say our meal was mediocre is being nice. The blackened red snapper was dry, the rice was nothing special, and the green beans were bland. It was the most disappointing meal for $290. Good thing the hotel itself was beautifully decorated, or it would've been a disaster. The very best thing about the evening was the company we kept. read more

I have visited the Grand Galvez/ Hotel Galvez many times over the past 15 years for a variety of reasons. My family enjoys the Sunday brunch here on occasion (more specifically the holiday brunch) and I have also stayed at the hotel for a retreat as well as to attend an event. The hotel has changed significantly over the years in numerous ways but is always beautiful nonetheless. I did prefer the exterior of the hotel being tan rather than pink but understand the intention was to bring it back to it's original state. One change I do love is that it went from being a Wyndham property to a Marriott property. The rooms are nice, clean and comfortable which is always a plus. As for the brunch... I think the brunch is a nice one but that it isn't quite what it used to be. Based on my observations from the most recent Christmas Brunch, I believe the selection of food items is not as elevated and the quality also seems to have gone down a bit. Regardless of the food, the service and presentation was great as always. I look forward to more visits to the Galvez and hope to see continued improvement! read more
