I'm so grateful to have found the Sagewood Schoolhouse as the first school for my child. We started part-time when she was almost two years old. I toured other preschools but felt hesitant to place her in a more formal and school-like atmosphere at such a young age. When I visited Sagewood for the first time, I was struck by how cozy, free, and home-like it felt. It was really the perfect next step from our cozy life at home during her first years.
The teachers speak to the kids with respect and treat them with love, which is what I wanted most for my child. It made me sad at other schools to see teachers shout directions at small children and set arbitrary rules for them that didn't feel in line with their stages of development. At Sagewood, the teachers set limits for safety and consideration of others but otherwise let kids be their naturally chaotic baby/toddler selves.
The environment is beautiful, inspiring, and set up for safe free play. I love that kids can take their shoes off and get messy outside and that the art projects are unstructured and process-driven. Snacks are made fresh (and kids sometimes get to help make them) and kids bring their own lunches but can share with each other. The approach to food was another big draw for me--I like that the kids get to eat fresh food with sweets here and there. It feels thoughtful and relaxed, like the Sagewood approach in general.
Some other things I love about Sagewood: the fact that kids are able to cuddle teachers or each other during nap time if they like rather than having to sleep in separate cots, the lack of pressure about potty training (and lack of pressure/shame about anything in general), the beautifully curated book collection, the sweet way the teachers would re-do my daughter's hair after it came undone throughout the day, and all the teachers' creative skills that create a rich and inspiring learning environment. This is really such a wonderful place. read more
