We enrolled our 1-year-old son in two sessions of Toddler and Me at Segray, and it was such a positive experience for our family. The program is thoughtfully organized with a great mix of free exploration and structured activities, all designed with toddlers' development in mind. Each week had new, well-curated stations and age-appropriate toys that kept things engaging and fun. Our son especially loved the music portion, including a session with a guitarist singing songs with the children. Angela, the program director, and her team were incredibly welcoming, warm, and communicative throughout the program. They did a wonderful job making the space feel inviting and safe for both toddlers and their caregivers, whether parents, grandparents, or nannies. That was especially meaningful for little ones who may not have had prior school experience yet. The staff was fantastic with the children and clearly cared deeply about creating a nurturing environment. You can really see the love and thought they put into everything, from the classroom setup to the outdoor play areas. Overall, Toddler and Me was a great value and wonderful exposure for our son. I feel so incredibly lucky to have found Segray -- and for my son to get to experience the care, support and joy that this school offers the children and families who are part of their community. My experience with the school was unique in that my son had been enrolled at another preschool for several years prior to me deciding to move him to Segray. Unfortunately, his prior school was suffering from administrative and staffing challenges that were significantly affecting my son, leaving me no choice but to seek out a new school for him at the end of his pre-K year and just two months before he was set to begin Kindergarten. A friend referred me to Segray and suggested I reach out to Annette and Abby about enrolling. I was very upfront with both of them about the challenges we'd experienced and the effect it was having on my son. They could not have been more welcoming, understanding and supportive - things I was in desperate need of after feeling a lack of support at the prior school. They welcomed my son into the classroom and worked very closely with us to calm my nerves and ensure my son felt supported and welcome in his new school. As you'll see immediately upon touring the school, it's a very inspired and beautiful environment. What you may not get to see during a short tour is how warm and happy the staff and teachers are, and as a result - how happy the kids are. In just two short months at Segray my son overcame the social challenges he'd experienced at his previous school, and most importantly he rediscovered his love of school. I will forever be grateful for Segray's ability to offer our family a more joyous and peaceful last couple of months of preschool and for the care, attention and compassion they offered our family during every interaction. read more

We came to Segray from a small family daycare center and we were a little nervous that our daughter wouldn't be able to get the same connected care she was accustomed to, but that was not the case at all. She absolutely loves going to school everyday and truly thrives in the Segray community. As parents we really appreciate the opportunities to get to know the teachers and other parents, it makes everything feel so much less lonely, especially as we emerge from the isolation of parenting during the pandemic. Even when we hit a rough patch with some problematic behaviors, Annette and Abby were so attentive to the needs of our daughter and supported her in transitioning to a class that was a better fit. They communicated with us every step of the way and included her in the decision making so she wasn't inexplicably shifted away from a familiar space. The developmental knowledge and kindness of all of the staff we have encountered is unmatched. I'm already mourning the day we have to leave. read more

This isn't a rating for the school, I've heard great things about the school , teachers and the organization as a whole. This is a review of Annette, the director's attitude. We talked today regarding a possible tour for the facilities for a future start date. All other 5 preschools in the area I've toured have offered virtual tours and have changed the way they regularly do things to support parents and community during covid. Annette proceeded to say does not offer virtual tours which I said fine as long as we do it outside, with masks and at a distance. she then proceeded to say she does not allow parents to bring their kids during the tour. I said , we have not had any other households in our house since March due to covid and safety and this isn't possible. My son will have to go with my husband and I. I have an medical condition and I wouldn't have allowed my son to play with playground equipment. I said we've toured other schools where we've had our son in the stroller outside the whole time and he's fine especially if we are just going to do a 5-10 minute tour. She continued to be cold heartedly stern and refused to make an exception for parents who are being covid safe and have no other care for their child right now. My son is not going to run off and lick or touch the playground. If the director isn't going to bend during such a difficult time for parents, I'm not sure what she's like during the rest of the year. Her delivery of the message was not very nice. She could have empathized with our situation and offered something out of the box for us. Instead she hung up on me and gave me attitude. read more

My daughter went to Segray from the time she was 2 until she aged out of preschool at age 5. In those few precious years, she enthusiastically went to school every day. In her last year especially, she never wanted to leave when it was time to go home! She loved her teachers (who were amazing) and thrived in their nurturing environment. Though she loves her new school, she still talks about Segray and how happy she was there. Annette was always available, honest and kind and answered any questions we had. We love Segray, the teachers, and the faculty. We have had excellent experiences in the three years we've been sending our children there, and we would recommend them highly to anyone considering. We enrolled our first child at Segray in 2021. We had initially him signed up for 2020, but with world circumstances as they were, we decided to wait. Segray was understanding and accommodated us easily though juggling everything was probably a challenge. We were relieved by this initial positive experience, and everything grew from there. We were inexperienced in pre-school and are thankful we got lucky with Segray. Our son was a little nervous when he started. Annette, the owner, spent time observing him and talking to us about his progress and decided to match him with teacher Michelle who encouraged him to break out of his shell. We were touched that the faculty cared so much and learned that all the teachers there were incredible. We enrolled our son for a second year, or TK, and sent our next child there when he was old enough. Our second child had an even harder time assimilating, and Annette and Jennifer helped with a plan to ease him into the school year. Once again, they were very accommodating with the schedule. He felt very comfortable around teacher Bianca, who was kind and caring. He would cling to Bianca when he got to school and eventually felt comfortable staying an entire day. The outdoor area is cozy and comforting. Older and younger children play together, and there are native plants, a garden, and even pet lizards! Our favorite part of the entire experience has been connecting with the other parents at Segray. Our son has bonded with several friends in class, and we are often getting together for playdates and birthdays on the weekends. We've become close with some parents, and we are thankful to be a part of a community with our children. As our oldest moves on to Kindergarten and we look at other schools, we realize how lucky we've been at Segray. Annette explained her philosophy about Segray to us a while ago, which still touches me. She wants Segray to be a safe place for the children to have fun learning since that all can change as school progresses. She's been very successful. There are a few things this school does well, and a number of other things that deeply bothered us, as well as a few other families who left or a handful who felt that the better option was to stay and tolerate the dysfunction in the name of not disrupting their child's routine. First, what worked well: There were some truly wonderful, caring and well-intentioned teachers and staff members we met here. The activities and curriculum were stimulating and enjoyable for our child. What didn't work: There was a very high teacher turnover before and during the pandemic. We were told this had to do with the teachers finding new opportunities or wanting a shorter commute, but the teachers would privately say it had to do with the way the owners were managing the school and the lack of support they got from Annette and Steve, the couple who runs the place. Other teachers would leave for better jobs quickly and often, and we were often left to wonder how much of the LOFTY tuition we paid went to paying the staff a livable wage. Inevitably, issues arise. Kids get hurt, policies are implemented that don't always work well for families (a common theme at Segray) and the BIGGEST issue here was that having a calm, rational and frank discussion with Annette about anything was either met with hostility, a misplaced outburst or rigid defensiveness. Once we had an interaction like this, her entire attitude changed. She wouldn't acknowledge myself or my husband, she was frigid and cold toward our child, and all-around unprofessional. Even more bizarre, she would send emails accusing *us of being rude to her staff. This entire issue was precipitated by our son falling off play equipment that had been placed next to an uncovered concrete ledge. He split his head open and required multiple staples. We were understanding of this at the time, but when we asked if our child could make up the days he missed as a result of this, Annette was not amenable to facilitating this. Then it took months for them to cover the ledge. Segray was ultimately cited for not reporting the incident in a timely matter. The best advice I can give a family who is considering this school is to do your research. Speak privately with families who may not feel comfortable leaving a negative Yelp review (like ours was at the time). Some of the other negative reviews reflect these very issues. Call other schools to see what policies and fees are normal, and what isn't. (Segray charges a SUBSTANTIAL deposit that they hold for the duration of your child's time there. Many other schools return this after a few months or apply it to the balance of your child's tuition). Segray also now requires a year-long commitment to attend and will charge you $600 to withdraw your child even a week sooner. They will assure you their increasingly expensive, stringent policies are all in the name of COVID, or are expected costs of doing businesses, but ultimately this place is *ALL* about turning a profit and lining the owners' pockets. Like another reviewer said, Segray will assure you their way of conducting business is "industry standard," and a little homework will show that very often that is not the case. The priority at this school: the owners' bottom line. We are much happier elsewhere, and you can be too. read more

I have a lot to say about our experience at Segray but it boils down to 2 things: teachers are fantastic, but the owners are not. Communication was often condescending (at best) if there were any parental questions on a range of topics from parking lot safety to what certain fees were for (still unclear to this day). Our main issue was truly with the male owner who would belittle my questions around the (very expensive) fees and brush them off as "standard for the industry" (they are not), but if my husband called with concerns he was not met with the same attitude. I know several other mothers who had the same experience so I feel the need to be honest for anyone considering this school. We just could not continue to support Segray (again the teachers are great) based on the treatment we received from the owners. read more

My wife and I discovered Segray in the early days of covid, and choosing to send our daughter there was the best decision we've ever made as parents. Everything about the experience was wonderful, especially since we were coming from a previous preschool that was not as welcoming of our daughter's "quirks". Our daughter has some social anxieties that often manifest as "difficult behavior" in the eyes of teachers. Well at Segray, the teachers worked tirelessly with our daughter (and our whole family) to make sure she knew, everyday, that she was a great kid. And sure enough, our daughter starting making friends and thrived at the school. We also felt very reassured that our daughter was safe attending Segray during covid. If we had to hold her out of school for a few days with a runny nose, we saw that as a small price to pay for having the school open and safe all year long. As for the owners, Steve and Annette were wonderful. They were very attentive to our emails and questions, and we very much felt like we could come to them with anything. In fact, Annette worked extremely hard to make sure that our daughter got the extra benefits she required from the city. She even spent several hours on a zoom with us and city officials advocating for our daughter (and of course singing our daughter's praises) during our IEP process. And for that, we will be eternally grateful. Our daughter now attends kindergarten in LAUSD where she continues to thrive, socially and academically. And we know she wouldn't be where she is today without our Segray family. Thank you Segray! read more

Our experience at Segray has been wonderful. The facility itself is beautiful, dynamic and welcoming. The teachers are fantastic - thoughtful, engaging, creative, encouraging and supportive. The school directors and administrators have created a great community for families as well, and always seem to be looking to improve and expand on their efforts to create new and exciting experiences. We found Segray during the pandemic. Our son was originally enrolled in a daycare near my work, but as we transitioned to WFH, we needed to find a safe space for him. We toured a couple facilities, and immediately loved the space created at Segray. Lots of outdoor areas we could imagine him running around. Was extremely nervous how he would respond to a new school, especially as we could not walk him in the first few days. However, he adapted super quickly easing all our concerns. His main teachers, Teacher Michelle and Teacher Arlette, are such kind souls, and have really nourished his growth during the year there. We love the daily update pictures, and easy communication through the Brightwheel Ap. All in all, we were so sad when he "aged" out, but know should we ever have another little, Segray would be the first place we would go for trusted care for our family. read more

This is a really good school. Our kids started Segray when they were 2 years old. They are now 4.5 and 2.5. We've been searching for elementary schools for our oldest: Private, public, charter magnet. . . all wonderful options for sure. But here is what I have to say: seeing these other educational settings has really put into perspective what we have in Segray. My kids are literally in school heaven. The amount of individualized attention is outstanding. Whenever I visit campus I see teachers working with the kids in small groups, drawing the parts of afire engine with chalk, dying coffee filters to transform into small bat sculptures (?! I know), or identifying pictures of acorns and tracing the letters. Both of my kids found their special people at Segray (key for pandemic babies.) They are nurtured in such a fun, and loving environment. The campus bustles with laughter and play. The teachers are incredible. Teacher Bianca plays her ukelele for the 2 and 3 year olds during circle time. Teacher Michelle laughs and dances so much it is simply contagious. The creative projects the kids do every day are so inspired! (I was a career artist for 10 years and have 2 art degrees.) Honestly the use of materials and ideas to help the kids put concepts and learning to life blow me away! Teacher Yvette in TK has the kids writing, reading site words, and breaking down the meaning of Dr. Seusse's "The Lorax." Side note, she is hilariously humble about her accomplishments as a teacher! Also, the kids always seem to have unusual reptiles to feed and learn about! They have two smaller ones in the wintergreen classroom, and a naturalist who brings in much larger exotic ones (monitor lizzards maybe?!). The kids love it! They also have visiting music and dance instructors, and tons of field trip and family gatherings. We love the parent group and regularly get together outside of school. And oh boy, Annette and the administration have been SOOOO accommodating for us. Each of our kids were, at one point or another placed in classrooms that Segray felt would be the best fit, but as parents we disagreed. They worked with us to switch classes immediately. I imagine that's quite challenging to do given enrollment and class size limits, but they made it happen. And it made all the difference for my very particular children. Annette always picks up her cellphone-- while in the office, out on family emergencies, while sick in bed with covid. . . I'm always surprised that she knows both of my kids so well, and can speak to their personalities and their dynamics in class. I learn a lot about my kids from her. She and Jennifer also know a lot about elementary schools, and bring in speakers to present further guidance to parents looking to navigate LAUSD, charter, SAS, and magnets. It's complicated, but they have the resources to help. I saw a few reviews saying negative things about teacher turnover and negative interactions with Annette. For the past 3-4 years we have been with the school, we haven't seen any teacher turn-over. . only loving dedicated teachers. Annette is very organized, and she creates an organized backbone for the child centric play based learning. I think it's important to have someone organized behind the scenes. Annette plans some great parent-only events which are great for community building. We love her, and our kids love her. Another thing I'd like to say is that the administration are very patient. My spouse and I have very challenging work schedules and consequently we're known to miss emails, confuse dates and deadlines, forget checkout procedures, and generally be . . . confused. I am a Professional Nanny who has worked in Los Angeles for 20 years. I've seen a lot of different schools. 13 years ago, one of my youngsters attended Segray in Atwater and I was so impressed at the facility and Annette's dedication to the children. I loved her right away. Since then I have always pitched Segray to parents looking for a preschool! Now that Segray has grown into a big school in Eagle Rock, I have two new youngsters who attend and love it! I love it too. Annette and her staff have got it down! ALL the teachers are spectacular human beings, the school is gorgeous, clean, inspiring, cozy and safe! Everyone who works at Segray are conscientious, friendly and absolutely care about the children and their environment. The staff are creative and go above and beyond! The school has music, gardening, art, creative play, Spirit Week-which the kids adore!! And a lot more amazing activities! My wife toured many pre-schools before we came upon Segray. We've been very impressed from the start. They are an extremely well managed organization, which gives us even greater peace of mind during Covid. As an example, their weekly newsletter is thoughtful and provided before the start of the week, so you can understand what is being taught, and have a way to better interact with our daughter outside of school. Even pre-Coivid, the school was cleaner than our own house, and you could actively see a cleaning person on-site. The protocols they have put in since then has given us a high degree of confidence as well, otherwise we wouldn't have sent our daughter back (we are quite risk adverse). That same high quality also extends to the teachers as well. Their lesson plans and approach are extremely thoughtful. We see the results in our daughter as well. When we switched pre-schools and moved over to Segray, she made progress at a faster pace and the activities are creative and exciting for her as well. Segray is our first experience with preschool-- we were nervous about how our 2 year old was going to transition but she took to this school like a fish to water! We absolutely adore all the teachers and staff here. They really went, and continue to go, above and beyond to welcome her into the fold and to make sure she's thriving. The app they use is great for checking in and out and they send us pictures, videos, and notes all day to keep us informed of the daily goings on. Every day seems to be full of new activities, art and stem projects, music, gardening, dancing and so much more-- far beyond what we were able to provide her with at home. Our daughter loves going to school and talks all about her new friends when she comes home. Her verbal skills and personal growth have skyrocketed since starting. I feel so lucky to have found Segray; this really is such a special place. We started with the training wheels program to give my covid stay-at-home babe a slow transition into the idea of being away from mama, and the teachers were so nurturing and fun that he took to them in no time. Soon we were able to do full days and he likes it so much, some days he doesn't want to leave, lol. I found nothing but support from Annette and her staff with any anxiety I have or developmental challenge my son is experiencing; they really know what's up and have no judgements and that feels nice. They also offer pop up "classes" for parents which is super helpful and also a lovely way to meet other families. Everyday my son comes home, and they've worked on or experienced something new and interesting. I feel so comforted knowing my son is in good hands every time I drop him off at school. We love this preschool! Both our girls (age 2 and 4) love going to school. The directors and teachers are very kind and communicative. I especially love that they have a secure online portal and send photos and videos to the parents daily. The weekly newsletter is also great. We are so happy that we found Segray! The highest compliment that I can give is that our son, who has been at Segray for almost a year, lights up when we say he's going to school, mention a teacher's name, or list the kids in his class. Each evening, he comes home happy as can be. Even with all the COVID protocols and changes that LADPH constantly implements (by the way, I WANT my kid somewhere that follows safety protocols), the teachers and administration at Segray have kept their eye on the ball by providing a loving, calm, and stimulating place where kids can flourish. I echo what all the positive reviews have said, the teachers are beyond amazing--every single teacher we've had has taken the time to make a special connection with our son; the staff is kind, responsive, and professional; the communications (especially the photos we get each day!) are great, and our son has made tremendous strides. One thing I haven't seen people write about, but I also want to add to the list of positives is that the teachers and staff at Segray are willing to have open and even difficult conversations with parents to help the child. Our son wasn't ready to be in daycare all day at the end of the Training Wheels program. Annette called me and let me know that he needed to be part-time for another month. Yes, it put a strain on our work schedule, but the last thing I want is for my kid to be put in a position for which he's not ready. Annette was kind, honest, and put my kid's emotional well-being before getting a higher monthly payment from us. This just adds another layer of confidence in the school; I want someone to notice and tell me if my kid needs extra support and to provide a clear path forward to helping him succeed-- Segray did just that, and our son is thriving. read more

The 2 stars aren't for the teachers (they're great) but for managment and the directors. I have consistently seen them berate and harass teachers (especially from the Assistant Director named Jennifer). When my child was attending, there was constant turnover due to this harassment. This caused me to feel uncomfortable due to the constant changing faces but this was the only place nearby. Anette and steve do the bare minimum and view your child more as an asset to there daycare than a child to be cared for. read more

My son attended Segray and I can't say enough great things about our experience. It was such an incredibly loving, supportive and stimulating environment and the perfect place to help him transition away from home into a social pre-school setting at 3 years old. Annette was so communicative and knew our son and family so well, we always trusted he was in good hands with her and the rest of the staff. I wish I could give a better review of Segray, as they took our child in during the pandemic, but unfortunately it was a very mixed experience that ended on an extremely bad note. When our child started, we were told that she would be in a mixed class of 2-4 year olds, but until we said something she spent her days with the infants and her afternoons with an admin in the library. One of the selling points they touted for her during our tour was a slide and play structure, but it took multiple requests over two weeks for her to be allowed on it since we were told it was prioritized for the bigger kids. What we later put together was that both of these were due to the class being small until other kids enrolled and so instead of offering better individual care they made the choice to restrict age-appropriate stimulation. The longer we were with the daycare, the more we noticed decisions were made for the betterment of the business and less in the interest of being a care facility. This was extremely apparent when, after increasing class sizes, regular non-COVID illnesses became more prevalent and we were informed that Segray was having to get substitutes since two teachers had colds. Based on that, they added a policy that any child with any minor symptoms including a runny nose would be sent home and could not return without a doctor's note or negative COVID test. I understand caution in a pandemic, but that was a bit much and done only in the interest of not hiring substitutes (the daycare we ended up moving to confirmed that was not a CA health guideline as Segray had claimed). Additionally, communication from the school was consistently lacking. In her time there, our child went through potty training and a bullying incident which were both extremely difficult since the information we received from teachers and staff was minimal. The school put strict limitations on how teachers could be contacted, expressly telling us that we could not message in the app outside of business hours (which often ended right after we picked her up and got any info from her). All communication was often only through that app since it wasn't always her teachers that brought our child out to drop-off. Finally, despite giving Segray two months of notice when our previous daycare reopened and us being forced to leave since it was tied to a return to work requirement, Segray refused to utilize the future year school year tuition deposit toward the remaining months and kept over $3,000 for time our child would not be going there. When we spoke with Annette and Steve to understand the policy, we were told it was standard (no other daycare we reached out to had as strict a policy) and in the contract ("all money paid to Segray is non-refundable".) When we questioned conflicting information in the contract and tried to work to a compromise, we were met with dismissal and condescending responses. When we enrolled in Segray, we had no other options. With other care centers open now, I encourage anyone looking for childcare to explore other options that might look out for your child as much as they look out for their business because it's pretty clear where Segray's priorities are. read more

We have had our son at Segray since he was just over one year old last year. Everyone at the school has done a tremendous job creating a beautiful learning environment that is a healthy, positive place for children to play, experience and grow. They have also worked hard to keep everyone safe during this extremely difficult time of COVID 19, and are always open to communicate with parents and students regarding their needs. The facilities are clean, well maintained and based on a mostly outdoor approach. We can't say enough good things about Annette and her team at Segray! read more
