The new bar in the safari lounge

I agree with Arthur D - there is definitely a bit of a renaissance going on in the bar scene in Edinburgh at the mo'. Lots of dodgy boozers being transformed into something more upmarket. I've yet to try the cocktail bar through the back & I haven't eaten here yet either. Must try both - any excuse to go back (again). Each time I've been in, it's been for a drink on the way home from being up town. The bar staff are friendly, there's a good selection of beers on tap and in bottle, which is a winner with the OH, the house wine is good, which is a winner with me. It's definitely going to be my new local and I'm looking forward to many more visits in the months to come.

Vegan fish and chips. Really great.

Great pub with kid friendly area in the back. Great local brews on tap. Great food. The grilled broccoli salad was amazing.

We saw staring at us from a far the Gumbo sign, so we looked at each other and we said, ok. Rawk! It wasn't too busy, we were greeted by a friendly staff member and we said we were here for your food. We got a seat at a booth and he brought us over the menu. I felt there was so much to choose from, to be honest I was a bit overwhelmed. You know when you're at a restaurant and there's a few things you don't like so that helps in elimination for your final decision. Well, this had nearly everything I like on it. Oh bums! We had a few questions, one being. Kind sir, what are these Hush Puppies you sell? Well, there are made from corn bread and are filled with sweetcorn and jalapeños. My man said oh yes to them and a plate of their finest chicken gumbo please. I settled for a rack of ribs, man they were huge. They were so big they were bigger than my hands. I had a cheeky wee side of onion rings, which I'm glad I ordered. I felt the ribs were a bit undercooked for me as they were still pink in the middle. They tastied lovely but I found them hard to eat. I had to ask for a steak knife because I couldn't bite the meat off the bones. I need that meat just to slide off my bones. Oo er! Overall it was a lovely experience. The staff were really nice and the decor has certainly improved from the Common Rooms days. I would definitely go back and try something else from their menu. I fancy a Po' Boy sub next time. The pulled pork one is certainly pulling me in. Noms!

Absolutely lovely dinner experience…read more I went a few years ago and again today. Dinner - You definitely need to make reservations. Today I was at a hotel in walking distance and got a reservation impromptu for lunch and walked right over. The decor is a little old but probably intentional. The carpet in the chairs are all various tartan patterns, with the gentleman and lady staff in tarta suits or kilts. All the staff were very friendly and professional, working as a team to provide the courses and refills. The menu has a selection of five or so each of appetizers, main dishes, desserts and sides. Since it was a weekday lunch, I took advantage of the three-course special for around 39 UK pounds. My three courses are attached, the first being a delicious duck confit over black pudding with microgreens and Curry. Next up was a delicious sea bream (server advised me it was similar to sea bass) over put a nut squash with toasted coconut slivers. Last but not least, was a wonderful apple berry crumble with ludicrously creamy vanilla ice cream. Honestly, I should not have ordered all of this but it was a wonderful meal. Everything is prepared to order and meant to be an experience so do not come here if you're looking for a quick bite before going out on the town. All in all a consistently wonderful place

I met a couple of friends here and I had fairly high expectations after hearing good reviews. The decor of the restaurant is nice - spacious and interesting art work on the walls. Sadly the rest of the experience didn't live up to these first impressions. The menu itself does offer a wide variety of dishes, catering for both carnivores and vegetarians. They also had a number of specials up on the board. I settled on the Louisiana chicken served with sweet potato mash and thyme gravy. The service was incredibly slow - it took about half an hour for any food to arrive and it transpired that we had been given the wrong dishes so we had another wait on top of that. My dish was very tasty - the chicken was juicy and the sweet potato mash was nice and smooth. However, I did feel the portion size was fairly small for the price. There was also an issue with my friend's dish - she ordered a sweet potato salad that arrived without any sweet potato. All in all I found my experience at Ad Lib fairly disappointing and I won't be rushing back.
