All night long customers are in and out of their rooms slamming the room door causing a lid boom in my room and waking me up. The highway is less than fifty yards from this motel and is extremely busy and noisy with what sounded like cars literally racing well into the early morning hours. Other customers load and unload their vehicles slamming car doors and trunks, setting off car alarms and yelling right outside your door. The walls are thin and could bear neighbors sneezing and talking well after 2:00 am. The room was clean and comfortable but this doesn't make up for a terrible night's stay.

If you want to get away from the bustle of the city and the hectic work schedules of life, this is a good place to kick back and relax. The grits were not seasoned and there were huge 25 cent piece sized lumps. We ate there a second time and our meal was like prison food. My friend's pasta Alfredo with chicken looked watery. He said the chicken was dry and tough. It was made with obviously store bought pasta and there was no garnish. It was a big white bowl of white and off white food. Throw some parsley on it! My salmon and rice were okay. Not hot but lukewarm. The fish was thoroughly cooked, but fish needs to be slightly undercooked to maintain moisture. Anyway, the macaroni and cheese made me laugh. It was extremely watery. The bottom had lumps of chewy cheese. I realized the chef didn't know how to make a basic white sauce and incorporate the cheese into into it as one should. I think he mixed cheese and hot water together. I still can't believe it. We were the only ones in the restaurant. My drink was an old fashioned. It tasted as if it was watered down. There isn't a mixer in that drink so it needed to be stronger. We will never dine at that restaurant ever again. The server/chef was very sweet, but he needs to learn more about cooking.

If you can get 15 people to pay in advance to attend one of their tea parties, that's your reservation requirement. I think you can do all that on their website. I also heard they have a Cabin on site that they will let people use and I'm not sure what the price per night is on that. I don't think they advertise the cabin either. There is an antique shop on site as well. I wanna say the price per person for the Tea party with a tour is $35 each. Some of the guests really dress up and wear fancy hats but it's totally up to them. I did dress up and wear a hat at my mother's request and it was fun. I took a pair of flats too, because there are stairs and you walk around the property so heels are not great for that. The Tea and tour takes several hours, ours was from 2 to 5 pm. My favorite part was looking at all the period furniture and decor in the house and the interesting ghost story from the upstairs bedroom. The food was fine but I kinda wanted something more filling. It was typical of a tea so I guess it was ok. We drank Tea, had finger sandwiches ( egg salad, ham salad, chicken salad) a scone with jam and some petit fours for dessert. There is one restroom for guests downstairs so you may have to wait a few minutes. Still it was fun and I would return.

You can even enjoy a walk through the woods nearby. Very quiet and peaceful, a nice place to unplug from TV but still connect to Internet with a strong signal. You have the choice of a full breakfast or continental breakfast . We had one of each. Full breakfast of eggs, sausage, hot biscuits and cheese grits, at the main house along with a tour of same, which was interesting. Continental breakfast is orange juice and muffins in the cabin. We will definitely go again.

First, let me say this. "Hotel" is more like "Bed and Breakfast" in this instance. There are about 8 rooms at the Armadillo, all with a unique charm. If you don't want a place where you will regularly interact with strangers, this may not be the place for you. Next, the owner Denise is a hoot. She painted the art on the building, and is so funny. When you call The Armadillo you seemingly get her cell, and she is chatty in the best ways. When I called she stated that the weekend I was going to be there was, coincidentally, the first weekend that they would be open as The Armadillo, and they were going to remain at 25% capacity due to COVID. I needed a spot to stay in to visit family during 4th of July weekend, so I snagged it quickly. She informed me that it was $125 a night, but if I paid cash I could pay $100 a night (COVID deal, she said). That rate is standard for the area. When you get here - DON'T PAY TO PARK AT 1ST MONDAY. you can't reach it from that parking lot (generally speaking). What you want to do is drive down 17 to the backside of the mountain and you can park there. From here, walking to "The Mountain" is doable. I did it 4 times no problem. The room was clean, but certainly lacked many creature comforts. The first night I met the other couple in our hotel while we were at the Stage on the Mountain and she said that if you look around the place you can find a fan somewhere. In the summer you need it, especially in an upstairs room because the AC isn't strong strong. It's central upstairs, and window units downstairs. Also, they don't have any TVs at all. The aesthetic is Wild West downtown outside. Denise owns many of these and the innkeepers, Stewart and Sonja (Delightfully chatty folks) showed me the Hummingbird ($140 a night and GREAT A/C), and told me about her other property, "Cadillac Ranch" (Soon to open). At 8 each night there is a small stage at the Mountain (a short walk) that holds free concerts (seats about 12-15 people) and you can bring your drinks. Forget your drinks? Follow the Daqauri' s To-Go signs and they have some great ones you can walk back with. I had a great experience here, and would suggest it to anyone looking for a unique experience, if you don't mind the lack of creature comforts that come with the charm.

While there are some people there who care deeply for the horses, the overall conditions and management practices raised serious concerns during my time there. Water troughs were often left empty until boarders stepped in to fill them, stalls and pens went uncleaned for long periods, and feed frequently contained large, unsafe debris that could cause choking. There were also ongoing issues with manure buildup and strong ammonia odors in the barn. Since leaving, I've learned that it's only gotten worse; about half the horses on the property have become severely underweight and that a number of animals have passed away due to preventable causes. These situations are heartbreaking and show a clear need for better oversight and care standards. I'm sharing this out of concern for the animals and to encourage other horse owners to ask detailed questions, visit frequently, and closely monitor care anywhere they board.
