Lightly cooked leaves. The empanada was just a little slightly seasoned meat in crust. The fries were really good though. They also serve canned sodas. I know. Servers were polite, and loudly enjoyed football games on TV. There were no follow up visits to refill water or check on food quality or correctness. I've had the sliders and Mac n cheese before, which were good. This visit, I tried the deviled eggs again, and they were well seasoned and the bacon just perfect. The steak I ordered was rough, however. I ordered it medium, but the cut was a terrible cut with a lot of sinew and fat, and the temperature ranged from well done on the outer edge to rare toward the middle. There was enough sinew I stopped eating. The mashed potatoes were under seasoned and the spinach overly salty. I had a couple drinks, which were pretty good and they give you a fun little shot to go along with each drink. This place was a great spot for dinner to kick off our trip to NYC this past summer. We arrived on a later flight in LGA and had booked a cozy Air BnB in Harlem, and this place was right up the street. It was a bit of a rainy night, but inside this place was lively! We were seated immediately and offered drinks and menus. The menu was full of delicious options, classic and elevated soul food, we knew we'd found the right place immediately! We ordered some apps for the table, a couple of goat empanadas, and the parmesan truffle fries. These came out in a reasonable time, fresh and hot. Both were delicious! We found ourselves doing whatever we could to sop up the extra truffle oil with the fries, and the empanadas were gone in a flash. For dinner, I went for the lobster mac and cheese in a cast iron skillet, and wow. That was definitely the right decision! The mac was creamy, but had that perfect golden cheese layer ontop with crunchy buttery breadcrumbs. I found pieces of meaty lobster throughout, and the portion left me full. While there, we had a fun time mingling with the locals, and were offered a few drinks! It truly was the perfect place to take in the life of the city. First time and first stop in Harlem and it definitely set the tone for the rest of our visit to NYC. We were warmly welcomed into a really cool, modern space. Dark lighting and decor, but made for a really nice ambiance. Our server was super helpful and recommended some options for us. He raved about the MAC so we had to try it! The Row has super friendly staff that made sure we were well taken care of. We started with an order of the Row Fries, which I could have easily eaten instead of an entre because it was so good! We got the red velvet cornbread with strawberry butter, and it was just fine. Neither was very sweet or flavorful, although the strawberry butter's slight tartness was evident. I've always been a big fan of Harlem, even when it was not chi chi or popular to do so. I felt a kindred spirit with this neighborhood because for the most part it has always gotten a bum wrap. It's same way with the Bronx. Whenever I tell people I grew up in the Bronx the eyebrows are immediately raised as if I lived in a jungle fearing for my life. Just like Harlem, it was a neighborhood filled with families doing their best each day to provide for their loved ones and get ahead in life .When I was growing up, I was warned by the media and those in my neighborhood that the last place I would want to be caught in was Harlem. And yet, I remember as a young boy back in the 60s, my Mom and I went to a funeral in Harlem to honor our cleaning lady's daughter who died from a drug overdose. Yes, we were the only white ones in the congregation, and yes ,the service was filled with emotion with lots of singing and clapping and crying and wailing. I had never experienced anything like that before but I felt very welcome and I loved being part of that experience. My next visit to Harlem was when my theatre friend Leonard was performing his club act at a bar in Harlem. This was in the 1980's and many neighborhoods in Harlem were still a bit sketchy. My ex-wife Susan and I wanted to show Leonard support and do it in a big way so she wore her fox coat and I wore my raccoon coat. I remember parking the car and in the very short distanced walk from the car to the entrance of the bar nightclub we were approached by about a dozen people. Nobody hurt us or meant any harm, but when you see two people in a fur coat and you're trying to figure out how to get some cash for dinner, why wouldn't you ask? I remember when my grandfather passed in the late seventies and left me $10,000 to buy a home. I ended up buying a cute little place in Jersey City for $35,000 but I had heard about brownstones for sale in Harlem at a really good price. I remember touring an absolutely exquisite three-story brownstone with all the original detail for $100,000. Out of fear from all I had been told about Harlem, I did not buy that house. God knows what it is worth today. So when the kids and I went up to New York last week to see a childhood friend star in Funny Girl on Broadway, we rented an Airbnb on West 140th Street in Harlem. We were definitely the only white people in the neighborhood but not only was everybody very friendly and welcoming to us, but I even thought people went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. If we were walking up the street and a group of friends were in a knock-down drag-out fight, they would politely stop as we approached them and continued tearing each other up after we left! And then there was the lady who purchased some groceries with a charge card and wanted to return them and get the cash. Of course, the store could not do that and you should have seen the scene going on. She advised us to go to another register and we gladly obliged. We appreciated her sensitivity! When we stepped inside The Row Harlem, we were warmly greeted and it had a really cool vibe to it. Looks like a restaurant and bar that has been in the neighborhood forever. We were quickly escorted to a table and one of the women at the bar offered us a free drink. See what I'm saying? So cool! The meal was absolutely scrumptious. We were hungry and it was our first meal in New York this trip, and I dare say my first meal in Harlem in decades and it was an absolute delight. The pictures will show you how lovely and delicious everything looked but the taste was even more incredible. I had never tried truffle fries before. it. What a unique flavor. Everything we ordered was really tops. Hearty portions, made with lots of TLC, nicely presented and a reasonable price for New York, It's not always easy to find the real deal and The Row Harlem delivered it tenfold! I got the feeling that most of the people in that place lived in the neighborhood. Lots of laughter and friendship at the bar and there seemed to be some kind of backroom where there was a private party or gathering going on. Everybody was so friendly that I almost had the nerve to go back there and see the festivities for myself. The service was impeccable and we never felt rushed or anything, Very casual but very professional I felt like they wanted us to stay. On the way out, the same lady who offered us a free drink when we arrived, at the end offered me to come back anytime I wanted for that free drink. Turns out she's the brother of the owner who I got introduced to and I made sure to compliment him on the meal. Next time you are in New York, don't do the typical tourist stuff. You can have Olive Garden and Tony Roma's when you get back home. Happily stumbled across this place, while trying to actually go someplace else. It was later in the evening, so we just got drinks and some small appetizers. I got the lamb appetizer which was amazing and the reason I would go again. The place has a very calm vibe, yet still fun. People just out with friends. The little outdoor eating cabana felt well decorated and each table had its own hand sanitizer, which was a nice touch. Marvelous Mimosa and White Wine Sangria drinks topped off our great brunch experience... The next Wednesday evening seemed like the right day to go to The Row Harlem for their Reggae Night. I've eaten at this establishment many times and each time I like to try something different. Tonight I ordered the lobster fried rice...let me tell you...it's sooooo delicious. Plenty of lobster meat and not the "pretend" lobster meat. The portion is big enough for two. I also love their Asian Wings and Truffle fries. I'm not sure how to rate this restaurant. It wasn't bad but I wasn't impressed either. My girlfriend and I decided to try this place for Harlem Restaurant Week. I wasn't crazy about the price fixed menu but decided to give it a try. When we arrived the place was empty but they did have a dj playing Reggae. The place is small but cute which I liked. We sat down and I ordered a sangria from their happy hour menu. It was ok sweet but no real kick to it. For appetizers your only options are brussel sprouts and jerk chicken macaroni and cheese. We ordered them both after they told me I couldn't separate the chicken from the Mac as I'm not a fan of jerk seasoning. They came in a small pan so its a lot. Needless to say I didn't really care for the sprouts but the Mac and cheese was good but very spicy. For entrees you have a choice of chicken, salmon and pork chops. I was disappointed that for this to be a Caribbean restaurant you would think they would have more dishes with an island flair ( oxtails, curry, stewed) but they didn't. We both order the salmon it came on top of black rice and had some steamed baby asparagus. It was ok....more plate than food. For dessert your options are peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream and chocolate molten cake with vanilla ice cream. We ordered both and they were ok. I'm sad to write this negative review of The Row after many visits here over several years living in Harlem, but my most recent experience was extremely disappointing. I no longer recommend... I visited with a friend on a Saturday around 8pm. Although the restaurant was initially very crowded, we were seated at the bar, but as soon as we sat down, problems began.. The bartender (Naiajah?) was rude, condescending, and sloppy. Our orders were both submitted incorrectly and had to be remade by the kitchen. My friend was chastised by the bartender for addressing that she'd received the wrong order. The bartender was so busy gossiping with her friends at the bar to acknowledge and serve us. It was beyond disrespectful. Several of our items never made it out of the kitchen because "there were many orders ahead of us" despite a 1.5 hour wait... My friend's lamb chops were so tough, we joked she could feel them to her dog. On our way out, I overheard the bartender and her friends saying "Good, they're gone" referring to us... I have NEVER experienced such hostile service in all of NYC. Truthfully, I don't think I'll return to The Row - the prices ($75/pp for 1 drink + 1 entree!!) are TOO high with so many other quality Black-owned restaurants in the area, it's a big no for me. There was a lot of confusion about ingredients that wasn't actually solved. I can't eat raw onion/garlic so I asked if the israeli salad that came with the falafel could be subbed for another veg; the server checked inside and told me the onions in the salad on the falafel slider were "sauteed." I cautiously agreed if they were fully cooked, but when it arrived it was absolutely made of raw onions. Similarly, my dad asked to sub extra veggies for his mashed potatoes, but was served the potatoes anyway. From the moment I walked in I was disappointed, both in terms of the seating and conduct displayed by the two hosts who greeted us in a lackluster manner (notably the young Latina host who lacked the professionalism). We had a 12:30 PM reservation on Sunday, June 2, 2024. When patrons make a restaurant reservation in advance, it is assumed that a table will be reserved for them upon arrival. This ensures that quality service is provided, allowing everything to flow seamlessly and avoiding the frustrating experience of wait times and confusion. Unfortunately, when we arrived it was quite evident the two hosts were not prepared and had no table reserved for us. Both hosts looked around like they were trying to find a table (because obviously they failed to do so in advance). Eventually, one of the hosts begrudgingly assinged us a seat in the least desireable location of the restaurant. We expressed our preference not to be seated at that particular table for two in the center of the restaurant. as tables in that area have a tendency for high foot traffic. I informed her that I needed a more comfortable seating arrangement, preferably a booth seat due to back issues, but was nonchalantly informed that the tables in the middle of the restaurant were all they had at the moment. I turned around briefly and noticed a booth seat with a cushioned back for two, but was told that table was reserved for another party. I reminded them of our own reservation, to which they reluctantly agreed to seat us there for one hour, as another party was expected to arrive at 2:00 pm. However, 2:00 pm came and went, and the expected party did not arrive until 2:30 pm, accompanied by a crying baby and a large stroller. It was perplexing to witness the presence of infants in an establishment inteded soley for adults to dine, drink alchohol, and enjoy loud live music. Furthermore, allowing a patron to bring such a large stroller into a confined space proved to be a nuisance. The wait staff approached us multiple times attempting to rush us out of our seats to accommodate the stroller and its accomanying party. We insisted on receiving our complimentary drink due to poor service before vacating our table. In response, the waitress brought us our sangrias IN PLASTIC CUP TO GO. Needless to say, I will never patronize the row houe again. I was disappointed with my experience because the first time I went to the row house several years ago the food was tastier, and the portions were bigger. I ordered shrimp and grits and received a small bowl of grits with three tiny shrimp, (similar to that of rations given to us during slavery) and then charge me full price. (The shrimp were not even seasoned). I want to support restaurants in Harlem but I have no intention of spending my time and money in a restaurant where I consistently find myself involved in minor conflicts with unprofessional hosts who are paid minimum wage and clearly have a negative attitude towards their work. This type of environment creates an unwelcoming atmosphere and reflects a decline in the overall quality of the establishment. To rectify this, it is crucial for the restaurant to invest in experienced hosts who possess a friendly and welcoming demeanor. Furthermore, providing adequate compensation to the hosts is directly linked to the level of service they provide. Running a business without clear standards for employees sends a negative message about the management's commitment to excellence. It is important to note that quality service and properly seasoned food are key factors in attracting repeat customers. Conversely, subpar service will only attract transient customers who will not return, ultimately leading to the wrong clientele being drawn to the establishment. People seek both excellent food and exceptional service; they do not desire an experience reminiscent of a fast-food establishment. We as black people in the community can't to continue to accept substandard treatment at these particular restaurants. We have to set a standard like everyone else.
