Out of them, The Fleece is the best for quality (but not cheap) pub food, I was reliably informed by a local, and then sweetly taken there to verify this. The interior retains the traditional pub feel - a low ceiling, fire place, real ale and dark, unregimented furniture and a dog or two lying on the stone floor. You can still stand at the bar to get a pint but it is mostly waitress service in gastro-pub style. They have a great menu if you are into meat - lamb shank and good fish. They were even able to modify my fish, potatoes and vegetables so that it was dairy and gluten free - not a hard thing to do in this case but I always appreciate the effort. The lamb shank of my Addingham local looked like it was done to perfection.

We were really happy to stuble across the Slaters with its fantastic patio - perfect for a sunny afternoon and with possibly the best view I have ever seen from a pub patio. Dogs were very welcome to sit outside and lots of water bowls were provided for them. It was a bit like Crufts actually particularly when we joined the crowd with our two Newfoundlands! After a couple of cool drinks we decided to drop the dogs back to the boat and returned to the Slaters for Dinner. We were lucky to get a table as they were fully booked which is a great indication of the quality of the food. The menu covers all tastes - fresh fish, steaks, great veggie options supplemented by Sunday Roasts on the special board. My Spinach & Ricotta lasagne was delicious and OH Fish & Chips soon disappeared without a trace. Neither of us could make desert as the portions were more than enough - and we did have a cheeky garlic bread starter which was just dripping with garlic butter and to die for - I did see a guy on the next table sampling the home made New York Cheescake, it looked amazing and was the biggest portion I have ever seen. Isn't it funny how really skinny people can eat so much????? All in all this is a great pub, great food and I must make a special mention of the Landlord and Landlady who despite being run off their feet were really friendly and welcoming, they took time to chat to everyone. It was a really pleasant change. The Slaters Arms gets my vote and we will return - its not particularly close to home but will be worth the effort.

So, of course we went the first night thinking we would try something else out the other nights.....needless to say, we never made it to any other place to dine. The only thing pub about the Kings Head is that there is beer flow here. Besides that.....This beautifully, quaint old world polished wood bar with tucked away booths, and its warm, gleaming, open pot stove fireplace. Is one of the best restaurants I have ever had the honor to consume platefuls of masterpiece after masterpiece. THE freshest farm/garden to table I have ever tasted, they had a chalkboard menu wall where by the second time someone walks out to erase, you wait in anticipation to see that what you really want wont be removed. The pork belly was cooked perfectly resulting in two clean plates. I highly recommend the 15 minute wait for the chocolate fondant pudding - a delicate sponge pudding which oozes with the smoothest chocolate sauce. The staff were very friendly and chatty.

Simple as that. The wine list has some excellent tipples on and it isn't ridiculously expensive either. The ale is finely kept and there is a nice selection as well. My only problem is deciding my beverage of choice. As for the food, it's real served pub grub of the highest order. This place deserves a good old pat on the back. They are also super relaxed about dogs and walkers too, which is good to know if you want a walking stop off point to refuel.

I can heartily recommend both. Although food is clearly the main event here, a decent selection of house and guest ales means its also worth just popping in for a drink, and with the pub's position just five minutes from the centre of Ilkley, a quaint, up-market spa town, and at the start of the Dales Way, there are plenty of opportunities to walk off any excesses.

The menu isn't massive but everything on it is good. The bread rolls are obviously freshly baked on site and are delicious. The fish and chips with mushy peas is really good as is the sausage and mash. The soup is always good too. It's quite pricey but worth it. The chef also does guinea pig nights where you can go and try out new food for a cheaper price and then review - these are very popular so its worth booking in advabnce.
