The pub itself is just a few minutes from the station, under the bridge, and along the road for a mere minute. There's an outside bit of space to drink at the front, and I'm sure it was mentioned that it overlooked the canal, but alas it was both cold and dark so we didn't get a chance to check. Inside it's properly cosy, like a traditional pub should be. Carpeted, wooden features, and a handful of locals. The lady at the bar was lovely, and checked the percentages on the beers for me (I know, I can hardly handle a sniff) and I settled on a Theakstons Christmas Ale. Now this was a delicious drink, and my only sadness is that it'll not be served again until next year! Whilst our visit was brief, it was cosy, and I highly recommend. Oh -bring some cashinos though. No card machine, and the nearest cash point is about a 10 minute walk!

The chicken skewers with chipotle sauce served on a sizzling platter with onions and peppers, along with chips, onion rings and tomato was excellent, and a deceptively large plateful - I was absolutely stuffed by the time I'd finished. Washed down with a pint of lager, it came to £11 - fine value for the money! Staff are always friendly, the food and beer is nice and not expensive. What's not to like?

Gorgeous old pub that still looks like a traditional pub, truly a gem, the freshest seafood including Whitby crab, a truly remarkable "real" shepherds pie made with braised shoulder of lamb and wonderful home made deserts. Service was friendly and attentive and prices were reasonable. I don't get it, this place should be on everyones list to visit at least a couple of times a month, i'm guessing their Sunday roasts would be off the charts good. I'd certainly head back.
