Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love doing things with my daughter and would enjoy such a class but I also feel as though she needs the ability to follow directions, learn on her own and mingle with others her age. The benefit of the class here is that there's an option to do that which is great! Miss Jamie is wonderful and there's usually a young lady or two (teenage dancers) helping out as well. Each class is different from week to week with different music and activities. The owner and instructors are all very friendly (we only go one time a week so I only see a subset). The only thing that stinks is that you have to either sit on the floor inside which for some kids is okay but we learned last week that our tot doesn't really pay attention or participate if we are inside and we must then stand outside and look through some glass. Not ideal but also not a deal breaker. Great place to go to nonetheless and I can't wait to see the first recital!

If you are looking for a fun physical activity - head on over to Providence Swings!…read more I have taken both Lindy hop and swing dancing lessons here with my hubby, but singles are always allowed. Sign up is easy, and can be done through their website. When you go, wear comfortable clothes, and bring extra shoes so that you don't bring in mud and dirt onto the nice dancing floor. The best part - their bread and butter jams! They are dance parties every thursday night that are open to the public. If you take their Thursday night dance class, you get into the bread and butter jam for free :) Prov Swings also hosts special dance weekends where national dance instructors come in to teach all different levels of dance instruction. The weekend also usually has a fun public dance that Saturday night. The lessons are for people of all ages - and I've seen teenagers through people in their 70's! One of the gems in our state - for sure!

If anyone had told me a few years ago that I'd be writing a review for a place that gave dance…read morelessons, I would have asked what they were drinking. Providence Swing will get you up and dancing, no matter your background, experience or, in my case, complete ineptitude. My wife and I wanted to take dance lessons after we became empty-nesters. We were looking for something fun that we could do together. My wife vetoed skeet shooting because there was no physical exercise involved. And so we started looking for dance lessons. We had never done any kind of dancing before -- ever. The scene in Hitch where Will Smith tries to teach Kevin James how to dance was written just for me. We took a few lessons at various places, all of which tried to sell you the next, more expensive lesson. We were about to quit and choose another hobby to pursue when we found Providence Swings. Providence Swings is a truly unique organization. It is not a company trying to sell you dance lessons. It is an amazing community of people who have a passion for swing dancing and want to share that passion with others. Providence Swings has a warm, inviting atmosphere. People really want to help you learn how to dance. And there are people of all ages there, young and old, college kids, newlyweds, empty-nesters and retirees. Lessons are relatively inexpensive and really only a part of what Providence Swings has to offer. Instead of continually asking if you'd like a more expensive lesson, you'll get questions about whether or not you're going to the next social dance. Providence Swings hosts a dance every Thursday night, free for anyone signed up for lessons that month. Everyone is welcome and it is a great time to practice, hang out with friends and have some fun. When you first show up, you may be in awe and somewhat intimidated by how good some of the dancers are. Don't be. They are all friendly and eager to teach you. They are welcoming and, my wife and I can personally attest, very, very patient and excellent teachers. Best of all, if you stick with it, soon you'll be dancing like a pro and you will have made many friends along the way. Where once I stood on the sidelines or -- when absolutely forced to -- did my version of the "washing machine" or "lawnmower", my wife and I now search out places to dance and actually get compliments on our dancing. We can now Swing, Lindy Hop, Charleston and Balboa. (Who knew there were dances where you actually move your feet?) We are still learning, but that is part of the fun. We love Providence Swing and can't recommend it enough.

Owner Kelly is nice but there's little discipline. She might have earned a degree in choreography but she was not a professional ballet dancer. The school lacks the feel of an "academy" despite its name. As stated on her website, it is a "a fun, family-oriented dance studio". It's a studio at the most, not an academy. Putting all the kids into bright colored & bling bling costumes and conducting a big recital may impress parents, but that's too superficial. If fun is all you want for your child, maybe this will work. But if you want some classical ballet techniques and discipline for your child, and elegance and grace, go elsewhere. This place is a bit trashy...
