    Inside the Reno Homebrewer

This place is pretty rad (if you're into brewing and GOOD, rare beer). We opted to try and use a "local" shop for our second-ever brewing experience, and the Reno Homebrewer did not disappoint. Hidden away in the "industrial" section of Reno, next to artsy tile shops and random "new, artsy" condos, the Reno Homebrewer exists. Shelves of hops, malts, sugars, mesh bags, carboys, etc etc line the (rather small) shop. A decent selection of dried fruit and spices exists in the center of the store. On one side, you can find the wine essentials across from a 'fridge stocked with rare beer that I've only seen here. A bar sits in the front of the shop (a place to enjoy those rare beers), where they also ring up your brewing purchases. We wanted a relatively easy brew session and we wanted to follow a store recipe, so we opted to check out the recipes printed out in the back of the store to "build" a Nut Brown Ale. Basically, the recipes line the shelf and then it's up to YOU to walk around the store gathering the essentials. (It's easy-enough, though. Everything is marked remarkably well.) The price was absolutely right and on-par with anything I've seen on More Beer or Midwest Brewing's websites....but you don't have to pay shipping if you buy in-person! The store help was also exceptional. Both workers were super-friendly and not-at-all judgemental, snobby, or anything that might make a new brewer self-conscious about important questions. We bought everything we needed and splurged on a liquid yeast over a dry. We bought a new mesh bag, some new metal caps, and a $10 bottle of Alaskan's 2009 Baltic Porter Ale. Our total came out to about $50 with all of the ingredients we needed, as well as the "extras." (There is a surcharge of about $3 or so to use the credit-card machine. I felt this was a bit steep.) We found out that you can get $2 back if you return the container that the malt extract comes in (clean, of course). I only took off one star because, well, this place is pretty dirty. There was dust pretty much everywhere. I realize that you sterilize your equipment before using it, anyway, but I would expect a brew store to be a bit cleaner. I also didn't like the steep credit card surcharge or the rather high pricing for the bottled beer (Dogfish Head was about $4.25 PER BOTTLE. You can get a 4-pack for almost double that price - even in Tahoe. I'd only buy beer here if you're looking for something super-rare.....the equivalent of seeking out a fine wine for a special occasion; for this, the Reno Homebrewer rocks.) All-in-all, I think this is definitely our new spot for brew equipment and ingredients. It's more fun to pick out your brew stuff in-person and the staff is really nice. I'll be recommending this place to anyone who asks about brewing beer.

When a couple of friends wanted to get together for a bite, they leaned on me for a suggestion. I…read moresaid, "let's head to a spot with a fun view that has outdoor seating: Brewer's Cabinet." They agreed and we were off to the races. We were seated on the patio as I had hoped. 'Illy' was our server/bartender. She's super personable and made sure we were taken care of when it came to food and drink. My friends ordered strips and wings and I chose the Cuban with sweet potato fries. They were stoked with their choice as I was with mine. The pork was paired just right with everything on the sandwich. The fries were cooked PERFECTLY, offering a nice crunch on the outside while being 'slightly' soft on the inside. I took my time enjoying this meal. The beer BC brews also wet well with this meal. Whether it's lunch, dinner, date night, or just a get together with friends, check out Brewer's Cabinet. Thanks for taking the time to read this review.

The menu has changed a bit since the last time I was here, but overall everything we tried was good. The tacos were on special that day--very good street tacos, in fact. Next time, I'd probably just order those again. We also ordered the fried pickles, which we remembered really enjoying on a previous visit. This time they were served as spears, whereas I believe before they were sliced rounds, and they seemed a little better that way. The salad was pretty good as well, though the dressing had a bit of a kick that was slightly overpowering. A touch of honey in the dressing might have balanced it out nicely. For beer, I went with the Moon Dunes Hazy IPA. It was decent, but it didn't quite stand out compared to other New England-style hazies I've had. Overall, I still think this is a solid spot for good beer and food. My only real disappointment was that the bread pudding wasn't on the menu this time--I remember that being a standout before. We didn't realize it when we ordered the pickles, but by having the passport stamped, they were complimentary.

Cut and pasted from their website: "Slieve means "A…read moreMountain" in Irish Gaelic, their family roots." Quality/Quantity - Been an extremely long stressful day! So I NEEDED a break from the day to just relax and stop thinking! I gave my wife a few options, a few breweries to choose from (or for me to just go alone, which she would not have let me drink and drive, especially all the way from North Reno). So she/we chose to go to Slieve as I have not been there yet. Actually, all 3 choices were breweries. The good news is that there are more and more new breweries opening. The bad news is that there are more and more good breweries closing, in ALL my hometowns... My first time in a nano brewery; cool. Today I got (and tried the following), all Slieve brands; support local: Oh, I did not know you had a happy hour M-F from 2-5pm; I just missed it by 13 minutes... Should not have spent so much time outside taking pictures for Yelp, lol. Pale Ale - Good, but I prefer more flavor. This is currently my second "go to" beer after reds. Jimbo Porter - Better, but then I tried the Cookie Monster! I also did not taste the coconut. Cookie Monster - My favorite of the beers, so much flavor. And I am NOT usually a sweet beer drinker. It was not an overwhelming stout, probably due to the sweetness, but you can definitely taste the chocolate and slightly coffee and caramel flavors. I would get this again, but it would always have to be my last beer due to the flavors. Beers that I need to come back for when available are: Your reds, IPAs and of course your "Trinity Tripel." Ambiance - On your "about" page on your website, it says you are still looking for a home for your brewery...? Is that accurate or does that page need to be updated? Cool space, indoor and outdoor seating. Bar and table seating. 2 bars, one the back, probably only used for events. Semi private room when you walk in. Ping pong, darts, games, cornhole, cool decor on walls throughout to read, etc. Open 7 days a week, see their website. Yelp's hours/days differ slightly. Event spaces are available; see their website.. Service - Good. We were also greeted by Shannon when she and Phillip came in later for a drink or two... Phillip was too busy drinking to say hi, lol. Price - $8 a beer. The typical cost for good craft beer. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 2022 with your nanobrewery; I wish you the best and am glad you own the building to help you weather some "storms."

We came for the Girl Scout beer pairing benefit! It was our first time coming to the brewery…read more I called at the last minute to see if we could still get tickets and they said we will squeeze you in, now that's good business! We got there a little early to pick our spot at the bar. We were greeted by Shannon the owner. She is a lovely lady and later met her husband Phil. They have owned Slieve's for about three years. They have a spacious building and super clean! The staff are friendly and accommodating. There is no food on the premises to purchase, but you can bring your own food or ordered inn. It was fun to sample Girl Scout cookies and taste beer. We started with 6 tastings but they threw in a couple extra. The event was well organized and the Girl Scouts were there to sell their cookies. I was a Girl Scout 50 years ago. I think a box of cookies was $1.00 - $1.25. I paid $7. Times have certainty changed. The brewery is in an interesting location that I never knew existed before, but now I do and look forward to my return. Thank you for making our day fun and memorable!!!
