Lunch Menu 9/2019
Alex k.

Came here for lunch 10 mins before they ended and glad they let me in! For £9.99 got an appetizer, choice of rice and meal. So it was ribs that were tasty (but did not have bbq sauce but a slight seasoning) with Kung Po chicken and white rice. The Kung Po came with a variety of fresh vegetables with real tasty bits of chicken and cashew nuts. The white rice was perfectly cook and was not sticky at all. I would definitely come back here again!

If there are Chinese patrons, it's usually a good sign.

Better than average Chinese restaurant in Edinburgh. The Scottish capital, and this may not be a surprise, is not exactly the British capital of great Chinese food. None of the Chinese places in the city even compares to something like the Red Chilli chain in Leeds, Manchester, or (especially) York. But when you're in Edinburgh and have a craving for things Asian, you can do worse than at The Rendezvous Restaurant. The Rendezvous is a little to the south of the old town. From the Sir Walter Scott Monument e.g., it is either a short bus/tram ride or a 25 minute walk (down one street, basically). I had dinner there after a visit to the CAMRA Scottish Real Ale Festival in July of 2014. Drinks-wise, like most Chinese places, The Rendezvous is a diaspora. Think some soft drinks and a couple of fizzy lagers, or overpriced, mediocre wines. But then, you don't go to a Chinese restaurant for the drinks. I had two mains and a starter: a (supposedly) spicy meat and vegetables soup, squid with mixed vegetables, and beef with mixed vegetables. All of these had one thing in common: A bit more spice would not have hurt. It was all pretty bland, but obviously freshly prepared and perfectly edible. Just a tad too dumbed down for British and European sissies. The decor is rather elegant, i.e. for a Chinese restaurant. It is essentially one big room. It was rather empty when I visited, but that was an early dinner. Service was okay. After all, this is a Chinese place, so you don't expect service flourishes.

Although the selection is smaller than the likes of Jimmy Chung's the food is freshly cooked and regularly replaced.

They do just about everything right here. For one; they focus on the food and what you as a…read morecustomer would like to eat and how you'd like to eat it. Secondly: No, actually, that is it. Alcohol license? They have a 12 seater restaurant, barely space for a cash register. So... Nah.. people will eventually complain about the coldness of their beer, or the off-ness of their wine. Nope, they'll stick with the green Jasmine / Lotus tea and to the food and concentrate on that. You bring in what you like at the temperature you'd like to drink it. Delivery? They will not have a driver on standby for you to eventually complain about the lateness and missing items. No no no. If you like the food that is cooked; you will come over and get it yourself. And trust me you will. I now understand those people that drive for miles to get their perfect hot chocolate served at some obscure farmers' coffee shack. I would be happy to order, jump on a bus and get food from here, if I feel flush I may even pay a taxi to collect and deliver... Heck, I may even visit people I know in the area a bit more to persuade them to do a takeout. You just swing by or phone up your order. They'll prepare and pack it in front to you so you'll know what you got. Ordering complicated dishes that take a long time to prepare? Sure you can, just order 24-48 hrs in advance - advice for how many people - and they'll have it ready for your the evening you visit. The lady that served us knew all about the dishes that were available, supplied recommendations and was in general very friendly, accommodating and extremely helpful. As they are popular they do turn the tables around. We had 2.5 hours on our table, which is more than ample. Be prepared to get stuck in, eat with your hands and get pretty messy with your meal... (Oh was that just me...?) But they provide napkins, wet towelettes, fingerbowls, etc... As it is such a small place I don't recommend this for families with young children. You cannot run around, highchairs, trolleys, car seats etc.. will be in the way and most possibly restrict movement of servers and guests. They have one toilet and it is down a very(!) steep flight of stairs. If you do insist I'd say book the whole restaurant. I recommend this place for couples and close group of friends around 6-8 We had a wonderful time and I'd like to thank the B&D Kitchen for having us!

It is really hard to get authentic cuisine here in Edinburgh as the Chinese population here is not as high as London. Definitely give this place a try and try what the Cantonese community has to offer. Staff are really nice and helpful as well.

Chinatown was open and, so it seems, rather busy. it turned out that due to the fresh cooking of the meals, there was a slight back log in the kitchen. However we were duly informed and supplied with some complimentary starters for the wait. It is well worth the wait. As I explained, they cook most of their meals from fresh and that is something you can easily taste when eating. Service is good, but as they were stretched, some people got tired of waiting and left. They missed some good food. It is not often I give good reviews on delayed service, but they handled it very well and the quality was undisputable. Give them a try one day, they may surprise you.

China Town used to be based up in Newington for many years and was my favourite lunch place ever when I worked over that way (I was kinda glad when they moved as I got quite fat!). The lady owner is really friendly and welcoming and remembers every face that used to come to her old place. I'm giving it 3 stars as the service is friendly, it's a great place to come post rugby in larger groups, I often get a takeaway on my way to the train station (mega speedy) and the food really tasty. They are happy to make anything off menu too including my favourite chicken and beansprouts. The wine selection is pretty good too. Can't beat a Chinese restaurant that sells a good Chablis!

I had heard about it, as it is open very late and feeds the drunk 2am market. What's not to like? Well, I made the mistake of eating here sober. Don't get me wrong - it was edible, but only just. I had crispy beef and my friend had sweet and sour chicken, but they both tasted exactly the same. The rice was really cold too, which I'm always wary of following a less-than-pleasant experience in Tenerife with bad rice. The shop itself is quite cool in it's own way...maybe unintentionally so but cool nevertheless. I think that going here after a night out is the best way to experience PingOn, inebriating the senses.

However, being cosy and reliable is one thing - being chewy and bland is another. Even though it's a great place to eat n' chat it's not particularly great in the food department. Everything's a bit of a strain on the jaw and really isn't the most tasty. The staff were friendly and confident and the price seemed to be lower than a take away. I will be back here but definitely not for the grub.
