An OK stop midway between St. Louis and Louisville. Right off the highway. Shrimp poboy is a sizable sandwich with 6 breaded fried shrimp. Served on a roll with lettuce and tomato and fries. No remoulade for the sandwich, it's served with cocktail sauce. The shrimp were good - well cooked, not soggy or greasy. Fries also good, thin and crispy. Best part was the slaw - this prep is sweet-pickled, one of my favorites. Lots of country kitsch ambiance; sort of like a privately owned Cracker Barrel. read more

Great place to stop for a road trip from St. Louis to Louisville. It about hits the halfway mark of the trip. Food was pretty good. Ordered their special lunch steak sandwich on the way to Louisville and on the way back I got the buffalo chicken Sandwich? They called it a sandwich, but it was basically just some chicken and cheese on toast. Fairly tasty, but it did not come with any sides and it was not too filling. I hear that their desserts here are wonderful. Will need to try that the next time I come. read more

Stopped here on our huge family road trip through 16 states. The best way I can describe this place is a more authentic Cracker Barrel that isn't franchised. Very down fo earth southern feel. The menu itself was very large and diverse. For instance I got homemade lasagna which was very good. Very tender and smooth. My oldest daughter got fried gator tail. We all sampled it out of curiosity. Pretty good. Best way to explain was a spicy chewy chicken nugget. The wife got jambalaya. She liked it but other then that I couldn't get a better explanation. The decor inside was really cool and they had a nice little shop area as well. When we visited it was during the covid pandemic and they did very well at maintaining all safety protocols including several Sanitizer stations setup. Very good and friendly service as well. If I had to say anything negative it is that they pass off there credit card fees on the customer. It's part of my big 3 rules that always makes a place lose a star rating (no refills/fountain sodas, does not accept credit cards and charging the customer for using a credit card). I enjoyed this place tremendously but it definitely soured my experience. I have a large family and I actually use to work in credit card processing and the fee i got more then covered a processing fee. I honestly feel bad for the waitresses/waiters because I can imagine some people will take that extra fee out of there tips. I've honestly never seen a restaurant use this tactic and I imagine it probably so people don't penalize the service workers. read more

I was a little disappointed. It was nice that they had a bar, and I could order a Bloody Mary, but it was mediocre at best. Hubs and I both ordered off the Lunch menu. He had a Small Taco Wedge salad and I had the Corned Beef & Swiss panini. The German Potato salad side was GREAT! Both meals were okay, but it took way longer than it should have for a salad and a sandwich. I don't know if they were short on help in the kitchen, or what. Not bad. Not great either. read more

Since our Amish restaurant closed down, we had to find a new spot when traveling back from the lake house in Branson. Started off with a side salad and they had me sold when the salad came in a bowl that had been chilled. This shows how much the owner/chef/servers care about their customers. The lightly breaded Fried Cat Fish was amazing. Along with the fries and hush puppies made for a great meal. I can now say, we found our new place. read more

The service was good which is why it has two stars and not one. We went on a Sunday after church and it was packed. We always try fried pickles. Lots of the fried pickles we try are not memorable, unless they are really good. These are memorable because they were horrible. We were seriously considering canceling our orders and leaving after tasting the fried pickles because they were that bad. The only flavor was from the batter which was extremely salty. There was no pickle taste because the pickle was severely dried out. Lunch wasn't bad but my husband threw up an hour later. Nothing memorable to say about the bbq. It takes like it came straight from the bottle. Steak fries were mid. Potatoes needed some more flavor. The baked beans were really good. I really wanted to like this place because it gives the vibes of a Cracker Barrel without the chain but I won't be back! read more

My husband and I stopped for lunch at the Red Wagon en route to St. Louis. This is a very sweet place with tasteful decor reflecting the region and comfortable homey private booths and tables. The chef's daily special was a breaded pork cutlet, mashed potatoes and gravy, and green beans, along with a green salad. The lettuce was fresh and crisp and ranch dressing tasty. The main dish reminded me of my mom 's cooking, delicious comfort food. My husband and I shared this meal and it was plenty! We enjoyed it so much we ordered a slice of their homemade lemon cheesecake to take with us to eat later. The server was friendly, attentive, and efficient. Stopped here for lunch, and it was a great break from sitting in the hot car for hours on our road trip. The restaurant is large and nicely air-conditioned with old-timey farm decorations. Since we had gorged ourselves on lots of heavy eats throughout a week-long vacation, I opted for a small grilled chicken salad with poppyseed dressing and unsweetened ice tea to have a lighter meal. (I was also saving room for some yummy leftover BBQ ribs sitting in the cooler in the car that I was going to eat afterwards, haha.) The salad was fine. It came with a lot of cheese and two packets of crackers and was a fairly good light meal. I did notice lot of other dishes on the menu that I wanted to try, but alas, it was not meant to be for me that day. My bf got the fried pork tenderloin sandwich and really liked it. Didn't see any Hoosier cream pie on the menu. I heard it's an Indiana thing, but I have yet to see it sold anywhere. read more

Came in for lunch, was looking for something quick so I sat at the bar because the restaurant side looked similar to a Cracker Barrel just not as quirky. I wanted something somewhat healthy or not overly greasy so I ordered a Buffalo Chicken wrap. The wrap came with an odd red tortilla but the contents of fresh veggies & buffalo tossed chicken was very tasteful. I wolfed it down to get back to work & also ordered a full Chef's salad for takeout. I had the salad for dinner & it was very good & hearty. My wife and while traveling back to Indiana from Missouri saw what we thought would be a great place for lunch. The Red Wagon. We stopped in to find the parking lot 3/4 empty in Mother's Day! Upon entering the building we were told they could not take walk ins do to how many reservations they had. Best friend and I stopped at the Red Wagon on our way to St. Louis (from VA) after seeing a billboard. The outside looks like what you would expect from a country restaurant, kind of like Cracker Barrel, as someone else mentioned, but uncluttered and less commercial. Menu had a variety of sandwiches and other items to choose from. I only skimmed the menu and decided on a Chicken Bacon Ranch Panini with fries and my friend got the fried craw tails. Both were delicious, though I enjoyed the craw tails more. They were nicely seasoned and, unlike the server's warning, weren't overwhelmingly craw-tasting (like in the same way some fish is too fishy). My panini was made on a sub roll and came with the standard toppings and ranch on the side. It was good and an item I would recommend to others. For dessert, I ordered the warm apple pie (with no ice cream because I don't like it with pies) and Best Friend got the lemon cheesecake with cherries. Both tasty items, but she doesn't like no-bake cheesecake and I prefer my pies dutch-style so we switched and happily finished off our meals. Our server was attentive and friendly, as was a nearby couple who gave us several ideas of things to do in St. Louis. Wonderful experience overall. read more

Great spot off the Poseyville exit (#12). They are open for dine-in, with a small country store and excellent service. We ordered the grilled pork tenderloin and the cajun Alfredo (both house specialties) and can't say enough about how good they both were. Perfectly okay place to eat. I had the fried pork tenderloin sandwich. It was a tad on the dry side. It was hot and crispy, though. As were the fries. The sandwich came with fixings on the side. The tomato slices were something that should not be served. It was either not a ripe tomato or the cut too close to the vine. This is a pet peeve for me. Because the person who sliced it, the person who put it on the plate and the person who served it all got to see it. read more

I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone. My husband and I were traveling back from Missouri and wanted to sit down and eat something on our 17 hour trip home to Virginia. We came in about 7pm and the restaurant didn't seem that busy, we waited 10 minutes to be seated. Once we sat down we met our waitress whom we saw ONCE, I had ordered half rack of ribs, broccoli and baked beans and my husband ordered the mushroom appetizer. We never saw our waitress again after that, some other lady was taking over. When my food came out about an hour later i had gotten a full rack of ribs and asked why, when i had ordered half a rack, the waitress went back and said the original waitress had put it in wrong and she corrected it, she asked me to hand back the half rack I had received.... Which probably went in the trash, or so i hope because I touched it. What really should've happened is they should've let me keep that rack because it was their error. We had to wait 15 minutes just to get the check which is unacceptable, the waitress was nowhere to be seen. This establishment is a huge disappointment and any future trips my husband and I take, this place will not be on our place to stop at. read more

The door has a notice that they are now charging a 4% fee for using plastic. Yes. Just like crappy gas stations and bad buffets. The food is okay, but it's not a glorified Cracker Barrel. It's more like... a weird combination of O'Charley's and loneliness. This place isn't Indiana. They have Cajun food for crissakes! Don't order alligator tail in Southern Indiana. I've lived in Indiana my entire life, and I've never seen an alligator outside a zoo. Go up to the exit at Cynthiana and try the historic NISBET INN. That is Indiana food. Delicious stuff, super cold beer. Exceptional barbecue, If that suits you-- and unforgettable beer cheese. Looking for breakfast? Get off the exit at Red Wagon and go back to DEPOT DINER at the Griffin exit. A great Hoosier experience. Great bacon and eggs AND it's a state deer-checking station! Well positioned near interstate for travelers. The building is large and very clean. They obviously can cater to large groups like bus tours. The menu has some surprising items, but is mostly what you expect. My wife and I both ordered fried pork tenderloin sandwiches. They came with perfectly cooked fries, the sort you wish every restaurant could make Hot, crispy and done throughout. The pork tenderloin was NOT one of those pre made frozen hockey puck you throw in the deep fryer and time it till it is inedible. Please, do yourselves a favor. Keep driving. We actually tried to go to another restaurant out in the farmlands but it was closed on that day. So we kept driving. After our failed attempt to try that other restaurant. we wanted something convenient and there wasn't much to pick from in that area. So, we decided to give this place a shot. Service was terrible. Everything was overpriced for the quality. Everything we ordered from the chicken to the fries tasted like it came out of a food service bag from the freezer. Nothing tasted homemade. Everything tasted like it came pre-made from some supplier. The soup and salad bar was horrible. A few scraggly toppings, the dressings seemed like they came from a bottle from a dollar store brand. The soup was mostly thickener and had very little flavor. I even tried adding cheese and onions to the broccoli soup to make it taste better than wallpaper paste. It didn't work. The service also stunk. Royally stunk. Other than the soup and salad bar - which we were able to get right away, the rest of the food took forever. My daughter and I were done eating our soup and salad long before the guys had their food come out. When it did come out, it was wrong. They went ahead and ate it. The drinks were never refilled. The water tasted funny so maybe that was a good thing. It's a shame there's no competition right down the street. I guess when you're not competing for customers you can serve crappy food in a crappy manner. The place is rather kitschy and rustic. The fishing and hunting decorations are nice. It's like being in a hunting lodge where people hang their deer heads in the dining room. I like the building. I don't like the food or the people. Seriously, keep driving.
