Belleville Bait Shop Bar

We are currently sitting in the outdoor patio area of The Bait Shop, in Belleville MI & wow are we…read moresurprised! Every single thing we ordered from drinks to meals has been very tasty. It's not often that we are 100% satisfied, so we had to leave a great review. our server Jessica has been pleasant and helpful, zero complaint, very good, we will be back!

I finally had the chance to actually eat here, and I want to be fair: the food was good, and the…read moreservice we received was perfectly fine. The reason for my low rating has nothing to do with the food or our server. It's because of an experience I had with the owner about a year ago when I came in with my service dog. The owner refused to allow me to eat inside with my service dog and told me I could only sit on the patio. It was sunny and extremely hot, and I explained that I didn't feel it was safe for my dog to sit outside in those conditions. His response was, "That's your only option." He told me he had to "protect his patrons" and that he had dealt with fake service dogs in the past. I explained that my dog is a legitimate, task-trained service dog and that refusing us access because of my service dog was against the law. He flat-out told me he didn't care. At that point, I was just trying to find the friends I was meeting inside. He wouldn't even allow me to walk through the restaurant to look for them. My dog wasn't barking, misbehaving, or causing a disturbance. We had done absolutely nothing wrong. When I continued trying to calmly explain the situation, he told me that if someone sued him, he would deal with it then. He also said, "I'm sorry for how you feel, but this is my business and this is how I run it. There are other places to eat." That experience has stayed with me because it was genuinely humiliating. I wasn't just told I couldn't eat inside. I was singled out in front of other people, prevented from even looking for my friends, and treated like I had done something wrong just by walking through the door. I felt like a criminal rather than a customer. What hurt most was being told that he needed to "protect his patrons" from me and my service dog. Neither of us had done anything to anyone. I wasn't asking for special treatment. I was asking to walk into a restaurant, find my friends, and have a meal like everyone else. Instead, I was made to feel like my presence was somehow a threat to the people around me. It was embarrassing, demeaning, and honestly pretty painful. I came back this time because it was a friend's birthday. I left my service dog in the car because the sun was down and it was a much cooler evening, so I knew he would be safe. But I was still upset that I felt like I had to leave him behind in order to avoid another confrontation and simply be able to join my friends for dinner. And while the food was good, that made it much harder to actually enjoy it. Sitting there without my service dog brought the previous experience right back. I remembered standing there being told I couldn't come inside, being told the owner needed to "protect" his customers from us, and being told that he didn't care when I explained the law. It's difficult to relax and enjoy a meal when you're sitting in the same place where you were previously made to feel so unwelcome. So yes, the food was good. Under different circumstances, I probably would have really enjoyed the restaurant. But the experience of eating there is more than what was on my plate. I was upset that my service dog was sitting in the car instead of beside me, and I couldn't help remembering how I had been treated the last time I tried to bring him inside. Good food doesn't erase being publicly humiliated or made to feel like you don't belong. And it certainly doesn't erase having an owner look you in the face after you explain the situation and tell you that he simply doesn't care. I wish my experience with the owner had been as good as my experience with the food. Unfortunately, it wasn't, and that's why I can't give this restaurant a higher rating.
