New 63rd st station for 2nd ave line
    Lisa A.

Good things come to those who wait... Ok, 2nd avenue line...waiting like 100 years or something is taking that cliche a bit too far. But the new stations are modern and the mosaics lining them are beautiful. As for the rest of the q train, it makes getting from downtown Brooklyn into Manhattan relatively easy, and crosses into lower Manhattan (if memory serves me correctly) on a bridge not underground, so you get a more scenic view of the water and buildings. And back to the new part ... it really opens up the upper east side. Now you can get up and explore areas that were previously "station deserts." Excited to see the rest of the line open in the future!

The precision subway stops, the constant ebb and flow of people, the loud roar of the engines, the screeching of the brakes, the impressive crowd body instinctively knowing which direction to go, where to sit or stop and never tripping, running into anybody or falling over, so impressive. The tile walls depicting the street name or number, the steep steps going up or down, the genuine friendliness of New Yorker's, the speed of the subway wooshing by other cars, the armed policemen patrolling near the subway stops, all went by in a flash. This was my very first trip to New York. Our first night in town we went to the Beacon Theater for the Carol Burnet show and we decided to take the subway. First wall of heat hit me as I slowly climbed down the steps. It felt like we entered an entirely different realm. If I was unsure of what to do or how to do it, I just watched everyone else and copied them. Worked like a charm. When we used the subway, I don't think we ever had to wait more than five minutes for one to stop. Found a free app (City Mapper) to install on the phone, turned out to be very helpful. All you have to do is punch in where you are and where you want to go in New York and four or five different methods using the bus, walking and or subway, will pop up on your screen. For the longer rides I noticed a few people who could stand up, hold the bar and take a nap all at the same time. Now that is multitasking! Opened in 1904, the New York City Subway is one of the world's oldest public transit systems. It is the largest rapid transit system in the world by number of stations, 469 in operation. Stations are located throughout the boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. It offers service 24 hours per day, every day of the year. The subway system is also one of the world's longest. It contains 233 miles of routes, 660 miles of revenue track for a total of 846 miles. Based on annual ridership, the New York City subway is the seventh busiest rapid transit rail system in the world.

Thank goodness for the Q train being completed in the Upper Eastside. We can finally get to Midtown Manhattan without the hassle that we all dealt with before. In addition this subway line is better air filtered than some of the other older lines. I rode the line today from 72nd Street & 2nd Avenue to 34th Street and Herald Square for a business meeting. The subway ride experience was pleasant and easy. Thank you NYC for finally providing us New York travelers this extended line.

    Shiny!

Other than a short stint through Manhattan, the Q train does a fine job of bisecting Queens from north to south. Running from Ditmars Boulevard which is not too far from Laguardia (but not walkable), all the way to Coney Island in the south. It's not the fastest train in the subway and it sure isn't the quietest, but in many instances, it is the cleanest. I was truly surprised at how shiny my ride was from Times Square all the way down to Coney Island. And an hour or two after rush hour, the train slowly emptied of passengers getting off at the Alphabet avenues and Sheepshead Bay until I had the train to myself from West Eighth to the terminus at Stillwell Avenue. A little spooky in fact, when the train stopped for five minutes to wait for a platform to clear. No complaints, knowwhatImean?

Just remember, this bus doesn't take cash. You must purchase a ticket before you board. All three doors open making for speedy boarding and disembarking of passengers. Keep your receipt after you buy your ticket. Sometimes a MTA Employee will be at a stop checking to see if passengers paid. The fine for not paying is hefty! The buses are new and have been clean when I ride. Passengers are not as crazy as I remember in the past on this route. I like that this bus stops right on my corner. Especially when I have shopping bags. All major intersections have a bus stop along this route. You need to use your Metro Card to buy the fare. Read all the instructions before you attempt to use this service. Much like all NYC Public Transportation there's lots of rules and regulations. I'm still a fan of faster service. If you're going very far, or out when it's 20 degrees wind chill, you should ride! Check out my photos.

As one of the 28 stations in the original 1904 IRT lines, decades before the Lincoln Center was built and it was only just the 66th St. Station in the San Juan Hill section of town, you'll find the original ceramic trim maintained along the top of the platform walls. Enjoy this station's colored glass mosaic murals which decorate the walls with dramatic characters appearing to perform for passengers, including an often repeated diva in a golden hooded full length robe, which captures the light - as it should for a diva! They are what I normally catch through my train window as my Express train speeds by. In 1999, giving a nod to the Lincoln Center's dedication to the performing arts, MTA installed artist and activist Nancy Spero's "Artemis, Actobats, Divas and Dancers." This work immortalizes the period musicians, actors, dancers, acrobats, and other classic performers doing what they do best - put on a show! Better to check out close up when you're at this stop!
