There's this countryside feel contained inside, so it doesn't really seem like you are in Birmingham at all. The canals at the back are great to gaze out over in summer time, especially if you just want to relax with a pint. Inside, there's this amazing warmth that's perfect during the winter. The wooden beams and old furniture are also really captivating, and I don't think there's anything better than eating a roast dinner here and feeling cosy next to the fire. As a child, I used to love looking around at all the little models and ornaments which clutter every shelf and wall. They kept me very entertained. I absolutely adore pubs like this, and I'm so glad that there are still so many like this out there.

Let's be honest, eating dinner at a garden centre usually sounds like the sort of things your parents or grandparents (depending on your age!) would do, however, this little slice of African themed heaven is a far cry from what you'd normal expect of such a place! I've not made it to Africa, though have traveled widely in Asia, and the outside felt totally authentic, being similar to bars and restaurants I've eaten in abroad. Even outside, you are sheltered from the rain, and inside, where the buffet is served, it's warm and cosy, with live music of an evening, and the most amazing spread of food. I've been a number of times since that first dinner, having returned in the day with my dog, as it's dog friendly if you're happy to sit outside - they even bring a bowl of water for our four legged friends! I've had lunch there, and the most fabulous afternoon cream tea, and cake, whilst the choice is limited, what they offer is very tasty (and I'm a fan of cake!) I loved it that much the first night, that I've refused to go there for a meal again, as I'm going for my 40th, which happens to fall on a Thursday, and looking forward to sharing the experience with close friends. The service is always friendly. It's not always super fast, as it runs on Kenyan time, so this isn't the place to go in a rush. Indeed, why would you? It's such a delightful experience that it deserves to be cherished. Oh, and the shop is pretty fab too! So yes, dog friendly, fab food, great shop and friendly service!

This is a tough review for me to write because I am torn between two impressions. We came to this…read morepub after mooring our canal boat nearby with the plan to eat dinner and then watch the soccer World Cup final. The food was really nice, and so were the drinks (wine, beer, water, etc). Had the evening ended there this could have been a four star review. The problem started at the end of the dinner, after the game had gone on for a bit. I wasn't paying attention at first, because I could see the game at an awkward angle from our dinner table. Most of the rest of our fairly large group were sitting in the main room with the TV, which is also where the pub's manager was sitting. Apparently he got increasingly agitated about our group. Suddenly they were thrown out by the manager from the room with the TV, and even I noticed. I asked him what the problem was and he said they were taking up seats for the locals, and also not drinking enough. My message to him was that we had just racked up a 200+ pounds bill of food and drinks, but if he didn't want to have them sitting there without drinking more, we could certainly order some. The manager got visibly more and more agitated and started standing very close to me, almost chest bumping. His message was essentially that frankly he cared more for his locals than for outsiders like us. While I can sympathize with that, I think it's pretty clear to most pub owners and pub goers that he needs to cater to both. I can say with great confidence that we were great guests; aside from spending a lot of money in his pub, we were behaving well and not being very noisy. Pretty soon in our conversation the manager threatened to fetch the police, which was very odd, considering that I was being very polite and unthreatening. This is when we decided to pay the bill and leave, watching the remainder of the game on our boat. The manager followed us out and kept on talking, including various questions about where we're from. I thought that was odd but perhaps it was related to the racial comments I was only told later that several family members had heard the manager utter towards the only dark-skinned member of our group. I feel really sorry for the rest of the staff, who seemed as nice as any pub employees, and I cannot fault them for not interfering. Nevertheless I would prefer guests to avoid this pub until the owners have replaced the manager. I have never been treated more rudely anywhere, and the racial slur was unforgivable.

We were hoping to have a meal and were told they had stopped serving for the time being, until the rush had calmed down. We decided to stop and have a drink before setting off in search for food! The bar area is cosy and there is a open fire with an array of seating. The restaurant is situated on the other side of the bar, and appears to be cosy and light. The bar staff were friendly. Can't really comment much more as we only stopped for a swift half but would love to go back to sample the food and will update my review when we do.

This was the second example of the "village pub and inn" offering from Mitchells and Butlers (massive pub and chain food operator in the UK) that I have visited recently and it was much more successful than its sibling in Sussex. The Bulls Head is a nice old building which has been restored with some care and retains plenty of period charm. There is a seating option to suit all tastes so it's good for couples, with plenty of intimate nooks to get romantic in, and it also works well for larger parties. There is a spacious terrace out back for when the weather is a little more pleasant than on our visit. There was a decent choice of beer on offer with Doom Bar, Bombardier and 6x on the hand pump; all in fine condition, crystal clear and served at a good temperature. B was drinking the house White which she said was ok if a little bland. With the "village pub and inn" brand it's obviously all about the food and they are trying to attract an older crowd who want to have a meal and a couple of drinks rather than the "wet" only punters. The menu was a bit war and peace which is always a warning sign but our choices were well executed and presented (although for many dishes this means it's, at the very least, part prepared and then reheated). The roast selection, you get a decent size portion of three meats, was pretty tasty although you could easily have shared this between two people. Service was fine although you need to keep on top of your servers; they are all quite young and seem well trained in avoiding eye contact if they are in a busy spell. All in all we had a very pleasant Sunday lunch here and we would not hesitate to return. A well-deserved, rather than a grudging, 3 stars.

Prices are definitely reasonable, around £4.95 for a meal and a soft drink or a couple pound more for an alcoholic beverage. I was feeling like a hot dog so that's what I went for. Unfortunately our waitress didn't let me know they were out of hotdogs till after everyone else's food in my group arrived. They asked what I wanted instead and were able to have it brought out in a reasonable amount of time. Due to the convenience, I ended up asking if they could throw in a apple crumble at no cost. They said yes without hesitation and just wanted to make right their mistake. I'm always happy when a business goes above and beyond to fix a problem and show that they care about their patrons. If I'm in the area again shopping I will make sure to come back, I had wonderful service and food was great!

The staff were lovely & so happy to help. The range of ales, lagers & gins are extensive and the bar area is attractive with some lovely bar stool areas. The decor is cool & interesting as well as being cosy & intimate. There's a choice of booths or you can combine tables for larger groups ( there were 11 of us). Children are welcome too and it had a nice feeling of people dining rather than being there just to drink which can be off putting if you have children with you. The food arrived quickly & was very hot due to the close proximity of the kitchen. We ordered a gourmet burger and I was asked if I d like an extra burger party or chicken - knowing my man the way I do, I said ' of course' and thought we d work out how we could manage all the good later! The burger was as tasty as some that cost twice as much! I loved the Stilton & spring onion sauce & the chicken breast was moist. Chips were hot & well cooked as were the accompanying onion rings. The picture doesn't do it justice as I was so excited to dig in that we d eaten all the onion rings before I took the photo. The staff were accommodating and on hand with a smile, whatever you asked! We were so impressed that we ll be there for the opening on Tuesday ( steak night!) So if you re ever in the area & fancy a spot if food or a coffee after your shopping I highly recommend the Pump House - and it seems like you can park for free in Asda for up to three hours...so easy to combine the two.
