When you ask for beer that is what you'll get, and in a barrel looking-glass. Now, I'm not really a beer drinker but, after my first one here, it was my drink of choice while in Prague. Very surprised with how well it pairs with their food. A perfect match. They have inside and outside seating. Note that smoking inside is still allowed here, for this reason we chose to sit outside. The tables are covered so you'll be protected from the sun plus will enjoy the occasional breeze (depending on what time of year it is). Our server was nice but not too friendly. His english was very limited and was very difficult to order. Some of the sections in their menu are translated to English but others are not, making it almost impossible for tourists to choose what to eat. Thankfully we had someone who speaks the language help us. Unfortunately our translator had to leave and we were "lost in translation" again. Our orders got mixed up, and us, not understanding them, and not familiar with their food, went with what was put in front of us. Once we tasted the food realized that 3 plates were switched but luckily, everything was delicious so no one cared about not eating what they ordered. Still, it would have been nice if the server would have been more helpful, instead of saying "I don't remember what you each ordered, I just bring food out". Again, luckily all the food was really good. From their typical Czech food section we ordered the goulash - beef stew with potato dumplings, Potato pancakes with sausage and sauerkraut, potato covered Brie baked until the cheese melts, and more... I ordered the Pork trio with 3 different types of cheese. These are 3 pork tenderloin, one with blue cheese on top, the other with Brie cheese, and a third cheese (not really sure which kind but was delicious and perfectly melted on top of the meat). As a side, I had their boiled potatoes. That is one thing you HAVE TO try while in Prague. You might think, why is she telling us to order such a plain, boring food? That's what I thought until I tried them. Their potatoes are different, creamy, flavorful, they don't even need butter. Still I had a side of tartar sauce, which apparently is very common there. Bottom line, if you can familiarize yourself with the food, or have someone who can translate for you, I do recommend trying out this place, the food is worth everything else.

There were two types of sausage, not sure what, but both were good. The imperial stout from Plzen was very good. Also, the IPA from a town that starts with an 'O' was excellent, probably the best IPA I've had. There were some wonderful floral notes that were in balance with the bitterness of the hops, something that American brews that I've had completely lack. The bartender spoke good enough English, but seemed a little agitated at times. Note there are three floors, with different beers on tap on each level - look around before you sit down. Another idea - translate the web page with the menu before you go, then you'll know what you want.

Very upsetting lunch at U Kozla. I had looked online to see what their daily menu was, and found it…read moreto be quite reasonably priced and having a nice variety of choices. When I arrived at the restaurant, I sat in the garden and had a glass of wine and a glass of icy cold tap water. I received the menu only to find that the daily menu posted online was not the same as the daily menu offered in the restaurant. Oh well. I ordered from the permanent menu. The garden was clean and nice, the service was quick and efficient. The food was decent, vegetables were fresh, chicken was overdone and dry, unfortunately, and hard to cut. The reason I am giving one star here is that the waiter refused to provide me an itemized list of the charges, and they didn't take credit cards, so there was no official receipt printed. I paid cash as this was the only option, and I was definitely overcharged based on the prices listed in the menu. The waiter also asked my for extra money for a tip. I don't speak Czech, and wasn't able to argue. I basically paid the sadly not unusual "foreigners tax" for my meal. I should've waited for my Czech husband to get out of work and went to dinner with him instead. No one ever gives me a hard time when I'm with him. I would've likely paid the same amount elsewhere for a meal for two people. Never again, U Kozla.

My wife and I regularly visited this pub when we lived in Zizkov and recommended it to friends…read more However, the standards have dropped through the floor since those days. when we visited last night (Friday, 8th), we found that the bar had accepted a booking for a hen/bachelorette party, which included a male stripper performing what was developing into a full sex show by the time we left. This was at the point where he was naked, had exposed a girl's breasts and was spraying her with whipped cream. This would have been inappropriate enough for a pub branded by a "family brewery" if it had been confined to a discreet area - there is a large no-smoking area at the back. However, the show took place directly in front of the toilets, meaning that nobody could use them without walking into the middle of this "performance" Also, there was no table service during this show, which went on for some time, meaning that, again, anyone wanting to buy a beer - or leave the pub - had to walk through the performance. At this point my wife and I left and were laughed at by the waitress when we complained. This same waitress had led the stripper to a room at the back to change before the show, so it is clear that the management had approved this show. I have lived in Prague long enough to be relaxed about the "anything goes" culture in the city. However, there are numerous venues where that behaviour might be more appropriate. A local pub, branded with the name of the "family brewery", is not, in my opinion. This does nothing to represent the Bernard brand - and it is worth noting that the beer being served was not in optimal condition, which surprised me. When I complained, I got an email back from someone who wouldn't tell me his job with the company when I asked, insisting the staff were innocent victims in all this and had known nothing about it. That was a lie as the waitress had been with the stripper as he was preparing to start the show, led him to a room to get changed and visited him at least one more time before he started. Someone from the party was also allowed to visit him in the room. He claimed the staff were completely taken by surprise, had done everything perfectly and wouldn't even remark on the waitress laughing at a customer. He even seemed to expect me to sympathise with them, telling me the whole night had gone bad and ended with the girls screaming at the waiter and waitress (the words, "karma, baby" spring to mind). As his account was so far from the truth, I asked him for the contact details of the manager and he didn't even reply. I can only guess that the location of this place is persuading the management to make some very bad decisions, which is a shame as this once looked like it would be a good pub. But the wrong people can ruin any place.

A very unpretentious, authentic and straightforward pub and something of a Prague institution, U…read moreČerného Vola (the Black Bull) was bought up by its patrons to ensure it was not redeveloped into just another anonymous, trendy bar. The pub is situated a few minutes' walk from the castle and cathedral at the top of the hill in Hradčany, just opposite the Loreto church. It's easy to find as the exterior has impressive baroque murals. Inside, it's rather plainer, with painted walls, simple, dark wooden benches and a tiled floor. Although it's location inevitably means that it's full of tourists, it makes few concessions to them: this is essentially a beer bar, and the main draw is its excellent Velkopopvicky Kozel beer, in light (tmavé) and dark (světly) variants, as well as Pilsner Urquell, all served in 0.5l glasses. They serve a limited range of hearty Czech snacks, including some vegetarian items (various forms of cheese). The staff are efficient and workmanlike rather than especially friendly; expect a hard stare if you just have one beer! Locals tend to sit at the front, with visitors at the back. However, the old-fashioned feel means that it is one place you really ought to try is you're in the area, and it makes a great antidote to the touristy crush of the castle. If it's open, stroll afterwards to the Loreto church, one of Prague's most over-the-top Baroque creations and containing the body of St Wilgefortis - a few beers to fortify you first may not be a bad idea, in fact! It's quite a hike up the hill to the Hradčany area, but trams 22 and 23 will take you (via a scenic, circuitous route) to within a few hundred metres, making the climb for you!
