The whole crew at the Speakeasy are down to earth and have been giving me cuts that over exceed my expectations. I am making an exception and writing a review after my first experience today because I am happy with my haircut. Awesome attention to detail, which it is about time that a barber around does just that. I used to go for a while to Thecitybarber...well Bill maybe is attention to detail but gets sidetracked after 5 minutes he is on your head. I will write again after my third visit. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because it doesn't make sense to me to charge for making an appointment online, although that is not an issue and I highly recommend this barbershop. PB read more

This area severely lacked a barbershop like this. I had been going to another local place, but the barber I'd been frequenting moved to a shop in Eureka. I saw an ad for this place on Instagram, scoped the convenient 7am to 10pm hours, and headed over. Oscar, the owner of the shop, took care of the cut and man; he took care of it. I got a side part medium fade with a beard trim and every aspect of the services were top notch. Clean store, great barber, clean cut. This is the new shit. read more

This had been the second time I've been here, and the experience didn't live up to the first. Completely butchered the natural part in my hair and then when it's time to pay, I come to find out there was an $8 fee for making an appointment. Then, I still wasn't seen until 15 minutes after the appointment time. So after feeling frustrated with the cut and my wallet being lighter for no reason other than money grabbing, I'll search for a better barber. read more

The Speakeasy has a cool vibe, but it's not for everyone. It's not for families. It's more for the hip, and those in college and high school, not for young children. If you like hip hop music, and NWA style music this place is for you. It's different than the usual barbershop in Arcata. It's an only cash business which may detour some. While they do a good job, the building isn't in the greatest shape. One thing is the barbers need to have more communication with their clients. This barbershop doesn't have the welcoming wagon in regards to communication. They just cut hair, and whatever other service and get the job done. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's nice to be conversational to the clients. They are old school, which is ok, but it wouldn't hurt to get in the game more with technology and get better products. Clients wouldn't know this unless they knew the business. The employees are professional overall. Conversation is not their strength. The service I received was good, but could step it up. read more

This is a review after going two times to the Speakeasy Hair Lounge. The first haircut was done by Gio and let me tell you, one of the best haircuts I have ever received. He was incredibly precise and took his time with exactly the right type of fade I wanted. I walked out full of confidence and I could not wait to go back and get another fresh cut. The second time was a different tale entirely. The second haircut was done by one of the female barbers. Halfway through the cut, she left for a couple of minutes without notice. There was an apparent miscommunication between the two of us and I was left with a cut nowhere close to the type of haircut I wanted. Afterward, when I was checking out the lines, I told her that they did not appear straight and from that moment she had a very snippy attitude. She defended her lines blaming it on my hair instead and handed me a second mirror as if I was blind. She offered to give me my haircut free of charge for the misunderstanding, but I refused since I was paying for the service regardless. Look I get that mistakes are going to happen occasionally, but the level of professionalism she conducts herself with was severely lacking. I guess I paid to wear a hat for the next few weeks, really disappointed. read more

Had an appointment with JayJay. He shows up a few minutes late, no big deal. Then goes on about how he was late because he was high and had to "hit that blunt". I tell him I'm not comfortable with him cutting my hair and start walking out, he yells out the front door "you had me get up at 10:00AM" and "you better not come back here" or something like that. Couldn't really hear as I was just smiling and waving walking home. Maybe he cuts hair good high, I don't know, but that was a bad first experience with this place. read more

Does not take hair directions well. I even had pictures for reference while emphasizing not to cut length off the top, over the course of 2 visits and $100 total. All I wanted was a fade on the sides and back while keeping the length on top untouched. The first time they barely cut anything off at all ($50 wasted) and the second time they cut THE ENTIRE length off the top (another $50 wasted and super disappointed), again I emphasized to not cut the top. One of the female barbers was rude and unprofessional. They also denied my refund that I requested the next day. I support local business (note: none of the speakeasy staff are actually from Humboldt County) but please don't go to this place, they are only about the money and it shows. read more

I was driving thur from Canada taking a coastal trip. Making stops thur out. I stopped in a little sleepy town of Arcata.. wanting to stop and check out the town. I wanting to get cleaned up and found out it was this wonderful places first week. Hearing everyone talking that this is just what this town needed. Excited to break in a new spot. This barbershop is super convenient. It's open until till 10pm! we just got into town to visit family and we desperately needed a haircut. We read the reviews and was skeptical because one was a 5 star and one was a 1 star lol. Well I'll tell you what I don't know what shop the 1 star walked into because the one I walked into was definitely unique and worthy of 5 stars! If I could give zero stars I would or if I could even give negative stars I would. Horrible service! I'm glad I was there to witness what happened and the only reason I was with my husband was we had errands to run that day. I felt it was very important to share our experience with everyone. Especially with this being his first time there. Since my husband's regular barber wasn't available due to a family emergency and so he decided to give The Speakeasy a try. So, when we arrive, we go to open the door of the business and it's locked, so we wait a few minutes and try again thinking that maybe they're not open yet. Nope, they're open and one of the regulars showed us you have to be buzzed in. Let me start off by saying it isn't the 1920s anymore and you shouldn't have to be buzzed in especially into a barbershop. That should have been our clue right there to just turn around and leave. Once we're able to get in the woman there that cuts hair Christina is her name I believe, and she has the WORST attitude and was anything but pleasant. She was rude and condescending from the start. My husband goes and sits in her chair and she asks him, "what number on the buzz cutters does your regular barber use on you?" My husband says, "I don't know I just sit in his chair and he just cuts my hair, I trust him to do that." She then says, "if you want me to cut your hair you need to know these details and tell me what he does to your hair before I can start cutting it." My husband then replies again. "I really don't know, I'm sorry." She responds in a VERY snippy attitude again, " Well this isn't helping me at all and I need to know so I can cut your hair. Do you have any pictures of your haircuts?" We didn't so she, started to give us the worst attitude and started being condescending toward him and explaining all of the different things to us why she needs to know etc.... Acting like she was some kind of hair god or something (sorry to tell you, honey, you aren't). I have never felt so bad for my husband and it took a lot for me to just sit there and not to say anything, as she's doing this to him. I was so glad that he decided to get up and walk out. As we were walking to our car I could see she was watching us out the door, which I have no idea why. Maybe she's upset she lot her $65.00 hair appointment due to her attitude problem. It was hands down the worst experience from an employee, and he never even got his haircut. We wasted gas and our time to go to Arcata for this and to be treated like garbage by someone who REALLY needs to work on her customer service skills. You think after being told I don't know twice she would get a clue that he really doesn't know. Like we were lying or something. Get a clue girl and work on your attitude. read more

If I could leave no stars I would. This place is extraordinarily pretentious even for Arcata. Got a hair cut here three times. First time good experience. Felt attention was paid felt like I got a good hair cut. Second time I waited two hours, no complaints yet. When they finally got to me. Felt like they were not taking the time and attention they did the first time. Third time same as the second. On the forth time they told me they didn't have time for me. No trying to get me to come in the next day or nothing . So I was like, "fuck this place". Six months later thought I give them one more shot. They had a camera door bell so they can judge whether or not they want to let yOu in. But I didn't go away and they finally let me in. I sat there took a couple of minutes for them to say a damn thing. Then they were like do you have an appointment. Last fucking straw I tell you!! I went in looking to get a trim hoping that it would be better than my last haircut. It was awful so I tried to research places that I thought would do a good job, this was not the case. In the end it actually was worse than the bad haircut I got before. It had been about 6 months sense I had gotten my last haircut so my hair had grown a significant amount. I had asked for an undercut with a fade from a 3 to a 4 and keep the hair longer on the top so that I could comb it back. Kinda like young Leonardo DiCaprio but without the hair in my face. Instead I got practically a buzz cut with a little bit left on top, my hair sticks straight out because of how short it was cut. The most frustrating thing was that I was faced away from a mirror so I couldn't monitor the cut as it was going, I had to wait till the very end to see the monstrosity that was left on my head.
