I'm in town from L.A. for work and stopped by Off the Map for a much needed haircut. First of all,…read morethe vibe was just what I needed as an old (very old) former skater and fan of skate and punk music. And, I was very impressed with how well the shop was put together with skateboard planks and art...with everything very evenly and meticulously spaced out. LOL! Simon cut my hair and did a great job. He is personable and friendly and has a great story. He took his time, got input from me about what I wanted, and delivered exactly that. We started talking about old punk bands and he played some of his band's music which was cool. (Sounded great, I'll definitely check them out!) With all of that and a skilled and friendly Barber, I thought the price made sense. Sometimes you do get what you pay for.... I will definitely be going back before I leave and will recommend the shop to my colleagues. In fact, I recommend Off the Map to everyone...

No fade, simple hard line between shaved and long hair. He was in the shop for about 10 minutes before I met up with him. When I walked in, the man was using what looked like a disposable razor to shave his head and my boyfriend had specifically asked for a straight razor. Because he was faced away from the mirror when the man was working on him, he says he is unsure if he had used a straight razor before I came in. No aftershave or warm towel was applied. The shave itself is uneven, especially near the hard line where his longer hair begins. His longer hair was cut into (most notably a chunk in the back) and he no longer has a clean or even line. Immediately after leaving the shop we didn't notice anything wrong and drove away. However, when I parked the car and looked at him, I noticed what appeared to loose hair. I told him to hold still and proceeded to remove a lock of his long hair. Once we had gotten home, he was able to take his long hair out of his pony tail and another, bigger lock came out. This is when I noticed the chunk that had been cut into the back of his part. My boyfriend also noted the barbers hands were shakey while he worked on him. We will give 2 stars instead of 1 because the barbers were pleasant and they didn't absolutely destroy his hairstyle, but we will definitely not be recommending or visiting again.

I haven't a clue as to how the associated picture of someone is posted here on the review. It's not me. (addendum 6-4-2015) T.C. - - - - - - - - - - Okay if I've got the right place this looks like an older style union shop with the barber pole and all and I think I'm reporting on the right barber but can't remember only that he's from way down pismo beach way from back in the day. Found his shop on google maps. There's another place almost across the street where I could have received the full California treatment, we're talking wax this and that, if I were to wait a couple more hours but hey I'm from the midwest and the last time I had wax on it was called butch wax when I was a pre-teenie. Taaa dumm dummm. So we are in Eureka, Calif. for about 3 days on our Pacific Coast trip and my duck curls were starting to form so the time had come to get some good buzz barbering going. I have to say ' AL ' if that's the guy, did a superior job on my hair. Getting it cut without a lot of muss and fuss. I told him that it was nice to get a haircut without the usual 50 questions on just how I want it done. I mean when I go to my normal place here in Madison, Wi. I'm festooned with questions like, what size clipper do you prefer, (Like I actually might know this), do you prefer scissors or clippers etc. AL didn't have to ask all those questions. I just told him I was getting long and needed some tapering up the back and sides, thin some if it needed it. Nothing technical, and he proceeded to give me the most perfect haircut I've had in years. Thank you AL! Noticing my mini-rant he told me the problem is that as we both noted that older style union barbers are a kind of dying breed and that anyone getting into the business now days must go to styling school(s) and they are taught differently than the classic barbering styles, at least for the male gender. He said his wife was a stylist and was trained that way too. So in the future as great barbers like AL and his kind retire or just plain die as my lifetime barbers have done back in Madison, Wi. I'm just going to keep getting those 50 questions in places like SuperCuts and CostCutters and their ilk. Anyway couldn't believe what a nice haircut I got at AL Sanders Barber Center. Or maybe it's Sanders AL. I really don't remember. BTW got other travel issues in Eureka? Bakery and laundromat on same street less than a block away. Check them out too. Oh yeah, needless to say AL picks up lots of local cop haircuts at this business too, so he reported during my cut. Buzzzzzzzz.

Come with good intentions…read more This place may not be upscale, the most modern or smell good but it sure does the job! I came in for a relaxing cheap haircut and that is exactly what I received. This is a nice local certified hair stylist who has served the area for many years. Based on what the owner/hair stylist says she has been in operation for 50 years!! This is very impressive considering the fact that stores tend to change over time. The lady was born and raised in Humboldt. She claims to be Portugués from the Azores area!! Incredibly awesome!! The reason why this was a divine haircut was because for $25 the owner ended up washing and cutting my hair and was willing (if you ask) was willing to blow dry it and cut what you wanted off. The barber appeared serious and when asked questions he answered with simple responses and hardly looked my direction as if I was an off putting sight! Believe me I can be that way too but I will go out of my way to make small talk in return or voice that I am tired etc. Eventually the haircut was complete and I paid, (debit) headed out the door and when I turned over to look in the barber's direction he had the BIGGEST smile (whereas earlier he was dead Pan serious) on his face and told me "it looks so good on you" I smiled and said "thanks, it was hard to choose but I did it" strange, but okay. Update: My female partner came here and the owner told her many religious God related comments. We were not offended but for those who do not wish to discuss religion keep this in mind. By the way I love learning about all faiths, mindsets, beliefs systems and religions so it is fine by me.
