Gretchen was awesome! I would recommend her for a first haircut! He got to choose whether he wanted to sit in the car chair or horse chair. He's 21 months and did not want to wear the cape, she said that was totally fine and didn't put pressure on him wearing it. I showed her a picture of what I wanted and she was able to do it. I didn't think I can get so mad over a haircut, but damn that lady needs to be fired. Or pick a new career. The lady was all proud after she finished my hair saying it looks cool, but I looked so stupid I had to go to another salon to fix the hair. Practically had to buzz my hair out. The place had a 4 star review. I dont know how you get a 4 star review when you dont even know the most basic techniques of cutting and trimming hair. Right when she started buzzing my hair, I should have known better to stop her from doing further damage. At the end, I told her I can make it work, which is my nice way of saying, YOU SCREWED UP, I WILL FIX IT MYSELF OR GO TO ANOTHER BARBER. At this point I was already so upset that I didnt care about reviews, I drove down the road and saw a small barber shop and thought, "why not?" Cant mess up anymore than it already is." So I told the dude what happen and him and an old lady looked at my hair and said, she screwed up hard. I showed them how my original hair was and that I just wanted a trim but the lady cut it all wrong. Worst case, I told him to just fully buzz out my hair and I can wait til it grows back. Luckily the granny and the dude knew what they were doing and put my hair back into place as best as possible without having to fully buzz my hair out. They aligned both sides properly. read more

Had my haircut here awhile back and I'm just not recovering. I had very thin, fine, sloooooow growing hair. A man cut my hair, I can't remember his name now but my layers were sloppy and uneven, huge chucks were cut out of my hair that are still uneven after all the growing and cuts I've had since the. My length was entirely uneven all around and he seemed highly distracted during the cut, it made me nervous and I was right to be. Shortly after I went to blondies and the women there fixed me up the best she could, trying to cover the mistakes. I still feel like my hair is messed up from this cut and I'll never go back. read more

I hate to leave negative reviews. I totally understand that this may have been one isolated incident, but it was a pretty negative one that is worth sharing. Two things went terribly wrong here today. First, about 7 minutes prior to my two-year-old's first ever haircut appointment, I received a voicemail from the stylist saying that she was running late and had to bump us back a half an hour. She suggested that we go run an errand. I really appreciate the call, BUT I was walking towards the salon with my two-year-old in tow. His dad and sister were meeting us there, because it was kind of a big deal for our family. As a super busy family with two small kids, we run on a pretty tight schedule that definitely revolves around said two-year-old's nap time. Simply bumping back the appointment by a half an hour really wasn't an option... and after all, I had an appointment! Now the second thing (which really ruined the whole experience and is ultimately what is motivating me to write this review), really isn't the fault of the salon, but it does detrimentally effect my view of it and is the deciding factor in us never ever going there. As we approached the salon, we had to walk by the row of bars, most of which had scroungy looking people outside smoking and talking nonsense (it was 11:30 am). Not cool for small kids. Coming towards us on the sidewalk was a "street person," with a GIANT pit bull. As the dog approached, it became very aggressive and I had to grab my daughter and protect her from the dog, while I had my son in my arms. This all happened while my husband and I were standing in front of the salon trying to decide what to do. there were loitering/vagrants and drunks in every direction. At that point, he said, "well, I definitely don't want to wait out here for thirty minutes." As sad as it is, the Arcata Plaza is gross and really kind of scary. Unfortunately this business is located in the thick of it. Not a place I would recommend! The risky location and the lax attitude regarding scheduled appointment times simply do not work for busy parents and kids! read more

Clean, beautiful salon. Rachel was trained in New York. She may be intense in her passion to give you a great hair experience, and that's what you'll get: a great hair experience, and a very professional/fashionable haircut/style. She also cares about your hair health, and may suggest things - but there will be no pressure. I am partly writing this in response to some of the negative reviews: consider the source of the reviews, like the guy who wanted a free haircut. Also, to Angie P. - maybe you are unfamiliar with the Arcata Plaza. This is a college town, number one, so a lot of the "scuzzy" people you saw may have been college students - nothing to be afraid of - just styles that are "in" right now. For another thing, why are you walking your children along the one side of the plaza where the bars are located? You could walk from any other angle, and avoid taking your children past the bars. You could walk past the Tomo Restaurant, located in the historic Arcata Hotel, where Panache is located, and not even pass one bar, or you could walk to Panache from any other part of the Arcata Plaza - like past the cute shops on the Plaza, and a couple restaurants, or past the Jacoby Storehouse, which houses one of the most upscale restaurants in Arcata: the Plaza Grill, or you could have walked by Brio, which has the best baked goods in Arcata, or from the other direction, you could have parked - actually closer to Panache, over by the Sushi Spot restaurant (great sushi!) and the coffee shop on the corner right across from Panache (excellent coffee!). To give you the benefit of the doubt, I think you need to walk around Arcata a little more, and see what is really there, besides the north part of one block of the plaza. I think it is the liquor store on the corner, and three bars, and then the Arcata Hotel. One bar is a sports bar (full of students), one is known to be the place where college professors hang out after class, and the other one supposedly has the best breakfasts in town. Please don't judge the whole place by a few people. After living in a large city, I can tell you, this is hardly skid row! And as regards the timing: I'm a mom too, and sometimes things happen - like someone's hair takes longer to lift to blonde than expected. Should the hairdresser stop and let someone go with orange hair, because you're on your way? I understand the scheduling with kids - in that case - this probably ISN'T the place to bring a two year old. It's too sophisticated. Four years old, yes. Little guy who needs a nap, nah. read more

Michael was pretty good and dealt with my OCD about the shape of my head and the fact I was letting my hair grow for the firs time in years. Would have been 5 stars, but he trimmed way too far down below my neck line and now I look weird when I take off my shirt... that was strange. But still, 4 stars! Good work! read more

This place is amazing! I love Sarah King, she made my hair look fabulous! I've had many bad hair cuts in the past and I've had trouble trusting an individual with my hair. I'm super picky when it comes to getting a hair cut. She was very gentle and spent a lot of time on it ( a total of 2 hrs). She make its her goal to make you feel comfortable and to get to know you :) The price range was very reasonable $30 for an amazing trim! Ladies, let me tell you that my hair is extremely long so for that price it's a bargain! Sarah washed my hair and styled it after my cut. THE WORST PLACE IN ARCATA FOR HAIRCUTS.... The person didn't even come close to cutting the hair like the photo i wanted. Also I asked if they did donations and they said "yes" but after that they said I had to paid when I thought it was free. Also the woman was very very very rude and wanted to call the police on me because she told me she did donations I had no money on me. I told my friend to go grab me 35$. Thanks a lot fat B****** i could cut my own hair crappy and donated it to cancer patients without your rude attitude towards me. I want to egg this place... I never write these but my hair turned out so awful that I feel I should warn people. Emily colored my hair. The roots ended up being darker than the rest of it, and the red faded to pink by the end of the week. She offered to "fix it," but afterwards it was a weird streaky brown with some pink showing through still. Both times she left my hair feeling like it had a nasty film on it, and sent me out of the salon with my hair still half wet and sticking up weird. Basically I spent $90 to get my bangs cut. She was nice and the space is cute, but it was probably the worst experience I've ever had at a salon. read more

Panache is conveniently located on the Arcata Plaza beneath Hotel Arcata. I've had a few of their stylists cut my hair and all of them are very professional, each with their own specialty. Yanling is great with straight hair. She's a sweet, soft spoken women and gives a fantastic head massage. She'll tell you if you're holding tension in your scalp and by the end of the cut and style you'll feel very pampered. Rachael has a less gentle approach but really knows how to cut hair. When you meet her you'll know why the Salon is called Panache. All of her styles seem to be very sexy and she's great with curly hair. She'll also make recommendations for supplements and hair care for optimum health. The Salon offers special chairs for kids cuts too. We've never been turned down on walk-ins. The best part is you can eat at Tomo's afterward and shop on the plaza (just be sure to lock your car or lock up your bike when it's parked on the plaza) read more
