We got caught in the rain in Arrowtown and ducked in to this darling spot for a bite and a respite from the rain. And wow, what a cozy ambiance and darling spot that fits the small town vibe perfectly. The interior decoration matches the charm of the building's exterior perfectly - moody, cozy, vintage and intellectual. I love all of the nods to the town's history and New Zealand with the artwork and decor. Because we were outside of typical lunch hours and had just eaten, we didn't have much of an appetite and just split the BBQ brisket sandwich. Fare and prices are a bit on the higher end because it's an elevated gastropub, so note that when visiting. We liked but didn't love the sandwich - good enough for a quick pit stop! Service was friendly but we got the sense that splitting a meal was a bit frowned upon. What a gem! The mushroom risotto was what brought us to this place, and then the baked Camembert was what stood out to us on the menu. We came here for a "pre-dinner" snack and don't regret it one bit! The risotto had caramelized onions, lots of wild mushrooms, and a delicious creamy sauce. The baked Camembert was baked to perfection and maintained its warmth throughout the entire time we ate due to them serving it in the baking dish. The full sized wine flight was delicious as well. New Zealand wine is just the best! I'd be a regular here if I lived in NZ. read more

I had lunch at Postmasters as a solo diner on Feb 13. I was made to feel so welcome! The primary outside seating was full so I was seated on a side porch that faced the Main Street. Their service was prompt and friendly. They gave me a sample of their ginger beer so I could see if I liked it (I did). I ordered a salad and appetizer for lunch. Both were delicious. Now to the funny part. While I was dining, a group of 5-6 women evidently saw me on my porch (two four-top tables). They actually tried to get my server to move me, while I was eating, so that they could have my space! Their request was refused, and when my server told me, we had a good laugh. Then I decided to order dessert and linger a bit longer. I would highly recommend this restaurant for their food, service, and relaxing atmosphere. read more

This place is in the middle of Arrowtown and is as the name implies the converted residence of the Postmaster there. It is a charming spot that is in the middle of the tourist center of Arrowtown. If you can, get a table on the veranda and you will have a great view as the crowds take their photos and wander about the streets. This is not a place to power down a meal, but a place to sit and savor the view and the historic buildings. The food itself is quite good. We had a fish and also a nice salad. The food itself was flavorful and well prepared. The wait staff is pretty busy, but they will get to you. We didn't have time for a coffee, but this is a great spot for that as well. read more

A most elegant and excellent moderately priced eatery in the middle of Arrowtown, which is a most toursity town. Not sure if the Postmaster truly did live or not, but its definitely an old vintage Victorian house that's been perfectly converted into a lovely restaurant with friendly service, vintage ambiance, and good food! $22NZ Green Lip Mussels in a wonderful white wine, garlic cream sauce. Served with a healthy multigrain roll that was so good, that I asked for another one to dip into that savory broth. The wife ordered some sort of vegetarian plate, which was good for what it was and costs less than my mussels. This eatery might be a tourist trap in touristy town, but its still great and just as good as any place in Queenstown. read more

Past review said this was a tourist trap, but I'm not so convinced. The decor may be a bit gimmicky, but it goes with the history of Arrowtown. We had the pate as a starter and enjoyed the mussels and steak sandwich for lunch mains. All the food was delicious! The pate was rich in flavor, mussels were served up in a gorgeous white wine cream sauce, and the steak sandwich was cooked perfectly (medium). All in all, I'd recommend this to people looking for a good lunch spot. read more

This was a lovely spot for a late afternoon coffee and cake stop! My husband and I sat on the cozy, welcoming front veranda and sipped great coffees while nibbling at cake (I had the carrot cake, and he had the orange poppy seed cake - both were good). The music playing on the speakers was pleasant, the cafe's location on Arrowtown's main street was convenient, and service was friendly and prompt. Also, the free wifi was much appreciated! It's a cute little tea room right on the Main Street. There was lots of parking around, at least in the autumn. Takeout took a little while but it was a nice place to sit, with nice furniture and a fireplace. It feels like someone's living room. The flat white was good. The carrot cake was not. It was too sense and too sweet, and there was some spruce I didn't like. It tasted way too much like the McDonald's carrot cake I'd tried shortly before in New Zealand for comfort. The cream cheese frosting was okay, not too old and hard, and probably The best part. It came with a little side cup of yogurt or cream, which was odd, but the yogurt was fine. The scone was good, dry, as I think it's supposed to be, with fresh butter and a nice jam. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and in no rush. It looked like a place locals go to sit. They definitely wouldn't rush one out. read more

Walked past this venue after a bike ride with a bit of an appetite, and spotted the Seafood Chowder on the menu. The garden setting looked inviting but was full so we were offered a table inside. The ambience was relaxing and we had a window seat to gaze out on the busy streetscape, it was peak season for Arrowtown and the footpaths were packed with tourists. We were attended to promptly, but advised that there would be a wait for our meals as the kitchen was struggling with the demand. Oh dear, to stay and wait or find another venue. We opted to stay and had cold water on the table in no time. I had my heart set on the Seafood Chowder ! There was plenty to choose from on the menu, wifey ordered the hand cut Potato Chips with Salad and Aioli Dip on the side. I felt like a wine with my meal and ordered a glass of the Gibbston Valley Chardonae. Expecting to wait a while, we were pleasantly surprised when our meals arrived about ten minutes after we ordered. The Seafood Chowder is served in a fresh home baked half cob loaf and did not disappoint, I had to ask for a lemon wedge and it arrived promptly without question. Wifies dish was exactly what she expected - fresh and tasty. The Chardonae was crisp and chilled, the Seafood Chowder was simply incredible ! Worth the short wait and a good value lunch costing $44 for both of us. Highly recommended. read more
