They're located in the downtown shopping district, about a five minute walk from the Decatur MARTA Station. The bold patterns and pops of color in the window caught my eye as I was driving down E. Ponce de Leon. I circled back, parked on the street and went inside to explore. They have a variety of merchandise: African print fabrics Masks and wood pieces Woven bowls Jewelry Purses, backpacks and sandals Wraps and scarves Kente and Greek graduation stoles A few racks are filled with ready-made men's and women's clothing but fabric is really their forte. Hundreds of beautiful swatches line the walls. Most prints are $7 a yard but the silks go for $12.50 a yard. Since I haven't ticked "learn to sew" off my bucket list yet, I felt in over my head looking at all that cloth. Fortunately, they have contact info for seamstresses so once I have a pattern I can choose the fabric and get something made. It might make sense for them to sell patterns but since they don't I'll need to find one elsewhere. Anyway, I left with a cowrie shell necklace for the boy and two pieces of jewelry for myself. I loved several of their fabrics and hope to be back for one soon. Tess World Designs is a great addition to the Decatur shopping district.

The costume jewelry she sells is quality and I definitely appreciate the awesome service I receive from her with every visit. I have been a customer for over 10 years and this past Saturday, June 26, 2021, I was totally disgusted with the blatant disrespect I encountered. So here is what happened: I went to buy a few items for an upcoming party the following day. After I pick out some things, I am now ready to try them on and choose. Well, "due to covid"...the fitting rooms are closed until further notice. I have absolutely no problem with that. I ask, "ok, so how long do I have to return the items I don't want?" and the owner tells me there are no returns, only store credit! Now, wait a darn minute. Lol. You are telling me, I cannot try anything on because YOU closed your fitting room and I can't even get my money back when stuff doesn't fit right? (because anyone who shops here knows, cheap ass clothes don't always lay correctly on your body). So I ask him this very thing. I wasn't rude about it. I just wanted to make sure he heard himself and attempted to help him understand the consumer's point of view. I failed, miserably. This "man" screams at me "THAT'S BEEN OUR POLICY FOR 30 YEARS AND WE ARE JUST FINE, DO YOU WANT THE SHIT OR NOT?" I was appalled and vowed never to spend another dime there. Moral to the story: We, as Black American Women, have to stop patronizing these foreign shops that so blatantly disrespect us. I know it may not seem like a big deal, but think about it for a second. If you purchase an item for 57.99 and have to return it for store credit only, unless you are getting the same exact thing in a different size, they are pocketing more money off of you. You will never find anything for the same exact price in there. Which means 1 of 2 things will happen: you will either have to leave money on the table OR give them more to pay the difference. It's highway robbery and they do it because they know they can. Any business owner with common decency would re-assess a policy that is affected by a pandemic. Hell, even Goodwill gives you a full refund (within 7 days) while the fitting rooms are closed.

It is a very urban store and the clothing is not the same quality as the men's items. The men's clothing is made of quality cotton and has great construction. However, many of the clothing options looked more like "working girl" clothing. It was a sharp contrast to the men's clothing and seemed like more of an after thought. It just seemed to be more flash than substance. If you are looking for simple, tasteful garments, you may have to look outside this store.

They seem to have a maze of an entrance for the exit of the store almost like a spin door but it's a door with a one way in and one way out kinda maze .
