Poor baby kitty, completely lethargic and drooling thanks to an infection she picked up at her spay with Pixie Project.
    Robin D.

Updating this review to say Pixie Project's "low cost" spay has been anything but as the infection my kitten picked up from their unsanitary practices was passed on to my older cat. Two trips to the vet now and $400 in fees and meds. Not worth it! Not from my wallet's point of view and not for my poor kitties. If I could give zero stars I would. This review is for the customer service I received after my kitten was spayed. That process was relatively easy. However, what happened to my kitten AFTER her spay with Pixie Project has been awful. I took my kitten to pixie project for a spay, five days later she's sneezing, drooling, white filmy eyes, complete lethargic and won't eat. I then had to take my cat to an emergency clinic when she was running a fever of 105. Pixie project takes in all animals, feral and domesticated, without checking vaccines, and obviously without making sure that feral animals, or any animals, are spaced away from each other. When I sent them an email, I got a call back completely dismissing my concerns, and when I asked for reimbursement in the medications I needed to buy for my cat, I was told that "if I had called and talked to them, then they would've given the medication for free". This was NOT stated anywhere or made known to me when I picked her up. They told me how to look after her, but never informed me that if she got sick they will give her free medication. And when I told her that, she told me she would not reimburse me for any medication, even though they do it for free. Pixie Project is by appointment only with a nearly 3 month wait, so obviously I had to take my cat somewhere that does walk ins. Totally disappointed in the lack of safety protocols and the lack of care and compassion for other peoples' animals. Wish they would hold themselves accountable for not communicating or disinfecting like a vet should.

I have taken some time before posting this review because I had a very emotional experience with pixie project of portland oregon. I rescued two cats from the streets, It was over 100 degrees they were skinny, flea infested, Earmite infested, and not neutered. I brought them home feed them got rid of fleas and mites, got them neutered and first set of shots. Taught them to play and walk on a leash. I knew when I took them in I could not keep them. I am in my mid 70s already have two cats, and a husband that is fighting cancer. But wanted to help them. Set up to surrender them to pixie project, one of the cats is not friendly with other cats except his brother, which cause a problem with my cats but he was a great cat never bit or scratched, always used cat box, didn't claw furniture very good manors and was very cuddly, both of them were cuddly. So when I surrendered them immediately they euthanized the one that didn't like other cats said he was dangerous, and then his brother howled for his brother when he was gone so they euthanized him also cause it upset the other cats. I just wanted to to suggest if your cat you are surrendering is not a perfect angel find somewhere else, or find a home for them yourself. I have posted a picture of them in their memory.

I'd give 0 stars if possible. Got an attitude from one lady that worked at the front. She gave me some standard customer service BS line at the end of our conversation b/c she didn't want to answer a question of mine. A few days to a week later I spoke with another lady with a short haircut who claimed to be a manager: she basically called me stupid while yelling at me in the parking lot b/c I mentioned my dislike of not being able to see their dogs in person. Something I've come to find out nearly EVERY SINGLE find your dog guide suggests! In person is key due to the human error factor, imagine that. Guess my assumption at the time of their practice of not allowing in person visits was correct. MY BACKGROUND: I'm a Honorable Discharge, Navy Marine Corp Achievement Medal Veteran who lost his dog June 4th, 2021 in SE Portland around Cartlandia. His name is Howie and he's a Chihuahua with a touch of Minature Pinscher. He's missing his right (or maybe left) pinky nail on his hind leg.

The docs all go above and beyond to call me and make sure I have ample opportunities to discuss her care and answer my questions. They even are responsive via email in a timely manner. yesterday I called at 8 am to see if I could emergently get her in due to her getting sick, and they told me to come on over and drop her off and they squeezed her in for the day while I was at work! Super helpful and kind staff from the front desk staff to the techs and doctors. I've been using NW Neighborhood Vet for over 6 years and overall the service has been fairly…read morestandard, but my recent experiences have left me feeling frustrated and disappointed. One consistent issue has been continuity of care. There are many different staff members, and I rarely see the same technician twice, which makes it harder to build consistency in treatment and communication. I've also felt like some treatment plans have felt trial-and-error, which has added up financially without getting the results I need for my cat and dog. In a recent experience involving my dog's surgery planning, I felt there was a lack of flexibility and communication around logistics and payment timing, which added unnecessary stress to the process. During my most recent visit, I also noticed a strong litter box smell in the facility, which was off-putting. While it's convenient that they offer parking (though it is small and could use maintenance), my overall impression is that the experience has become less consistent over time. Based on my experience, I would recommend comparing options and looking for a clinic that offers more consistent communication, transparency, and continuity of care.

I cannot put into words the love, quality of care, patience, and expertise of the *entire* staff--with a special shoutout to nurse Melanie! Also, I could not hide that I was a very anxious new mom. I was afraid my ignorance would in some way harm Buddy. Dr Carr and the nurses were as gracious, kind, and patient with *me* as much as they were with him. More recently, Buddy has been dealing with gastritis and skin allergies. I quickly discovered that there is an onslaught of information (and possibly misinformation) available from Dr Google. I couldn't be happier with their care. I'm a bit amazed by those reviews that claim higher prices than expected. For example, Ashtyn C didn't get a written quote for "teeth cleaning?" Really? Does this person have any idea what can be involved with any kind of dental work for a dog? It's likely to include general anaesthesia if it's a serious cleaning. And was it "just a cleaning?" Somehow I doubt that. By the way, a mouth is a mouth. It doesn't matter if your dog is a chihuahua or a great dane, the same costs apply. In fact, chihuahuas are prone to serious and difficult dental issues due to their small mouths and tiny jaws. I've never even had a Chihuahua as an animal companion and even I know that. There's a lot about Ashtyn C's review that doesn't pass the smell test -- including his ignorance about dogs and how veterinary services are priced and shared with consumers. Didn't like the price? Then don't sign the consent form for care. I have never been provided with a significant service by Alberta Veterinary without knowing -- up front -- how much every aspect of that service would cost or likely cost and the low and high limit of the possible bill. I suppose I should give them "special credit for this," but this is standard procedure for ALL VETS. Like every other vet -- primary care or emergency -- they ITEMIZE the quote for you, providing low and high parameters and the time period for which that quote is VALID. They will then go over every aspect of service that you have questions on. I have always been given the opportunity to decide what was an essential part of the service being planned. I have always known what the service would cost. I have never been "surprised" by them. And, let's see, Hi C claimed that staff tackled and laid on top of his dog? Now, why would that be? Why would they be afraid? What exact behavior was your dog exhibiting? Was it a danger to the staff? One would assume so. Dogs can be dangerous. And Hi C was right there and didn't stop them and say, "Let us leave and plan to come back later. Maybe he needs to be sedated." I'm sure that if Hi C had expressed those concerns and sentiments, they would have accommodated their requiest. Hi C's probably the kind of dog owner who doesn't understand why they're supposed to pick up their dog's crap when out on a walk. No doubt, the world revolves around Hi C's sense of entitlement. Newsflash: my dog visits Alberta Veterinary at least once a month for a tech visit. He has never left traumatized. Then again, he's well behaved and well socialized. Maybe Hi C needs to be a little less "Hi" and a little more sensible about the behavior of their pet. Too many people these days don't use their heads, don't plan ahead, or don't plan at all. Or they blame others for their own shortcomings like not training and managing their animal companions well. Vet care is expensive. I'm low-income myself and sympathize with anyone struggling to afford vet care and sometimes having to make painful choices about what care is essential, what is crucial to my dog's quality of life, and what I can afford. If you're a pet owner who can't financially manage "surprises," then make sure you're not "surprised." Get a written quote, look into financing options, and/or see about accessing care for low-income pet owners through charitable organizations. Alberta Vet has never advertised itself as a "low cost" or "charity care" vet clinic so don't expect them to behave as one. Regardless, I have always found their costs for service highly competitive, if not fairly low. Moreover, they've ALWAYS provided me a written estimate up front for any significant care before getting my approval to procede. That includes the cost of a simple exam, a vet tech visit for monthly services, to surgery. They also do a very good job ensuring security for all patients and being aware when some patients are "reactive." That includes asking other people and their pets to vacate common areas when a reactive and potentially dangrous animal is going to be coming through.

We originally had an appointment scheduled to prepare for a neuter. However, that slightly changed when my boy contracted something so that had to be dealt with. The staff was professional, helpful, and accommodating. And the Dr. was un-phased, in a good way, when my boy came in for his check up. I say that because one of the nurses was kind of stand offish so it made it a tad bit awkward when we first came in. That said, we got that situated. Scheduled our next appointment for bloodwork and got that done a week later. And finally we had our neuter! The surgery went successful and everyone was super-kind and helpful!! Perhaps one of the best overall experiences given the fact that my boy gets pretty nervous with vets. Cons: No major cons. However, I did receive a quote for my neuter and during the bloodwork part, which is a separate appointment prior to neuter, they did bloodwork but charged me additional $5 or something. When I got to the register I noticed the discrepancy and they said oh when they were trying to find the vein they had to use a bigger needle, which cost me. Now, I am all for doing whats necessary but I expect to be communicated too and informed PRIOR to, not after making an executive decision and then charging me. Sure it was $5 but we all know how bills can add up at a vet!!

Through this experience I was able to understand why I may have had so many delays while the cat was generally healthy - because there were other critters in need of URGENT care and responses. I'm not sure that they could have successfully explained this to me at the time, even if they tried. I am grateful for the staff at VCA Laurelhurst and the opportunity to look back on my time as a customer with renewed appreciation. I think this policy, during these times when $30 is a lot of money, is not compassionate toward the community when it was a first time offense of running late. I acknowledge that they have this as a known policy, however this was my first time running late and I do feel this was an excessive reaction to that. I have also had issues with my account since I started coming here, I asked several times to separate a dog from my account that was no longer living in my household, they continued to allow me and my ex access to our pets records and appointment notifications. We both asked them to separate these accounts and it never ended up happening. I have felt upselled by this vet before too- they send out marketing emails advertising products? It feels super corporate for someone who claims to be a small business. I don't love the idea of vets trying to upsell product to me after they're already charging so much money for everything else. Dr laumen was awesome. Overall force-free pet care was better than other places. I have never had a vet charge me on the first offense for running a few minutes late to a last-minute appointment. Cancellations I completely understand. I pulled into the parking lot while I was still on hold with them while they deliberated whether or not I should be charged for "taking up an extra 10 minutes of the doctors time".
