Annie trying to save her "bum"
    Tito M.

Wow. This place and Annie has some nerve. I brought my cat in towards the end of October to have a cyst removed and was told at the time that I shouldn't worry about it and it wouldn't cause any harm. I was skeptical but the Vet assured me it was ok so I paid the exam fee ($60) and left. A month passed and the cyst grew so I called back to schedule the actual removal but they wanted me to pay another exam fee which I said was a bit high considering I had already taken him in for an initial exam and just wanted to get the thing removed this time around. I wasn't rude or ask for a free exam but was immediately met with "It seems like you are trying to get a free exam and we don't do that and if you don't appreciate a doctor's time or the benefits of a pre-exam then we just won't schedule the surgery for you". This is seriously the most unprofessional, presumptuous and immature response I've gotten from anyone I've spoken to from a place of business. I'd pass on this place until Annie and the management learns how to speak to the customers that have supported them during such trying times. Update: So like 10 mins after I posted this review Annie emailed me clearly trying to do damage control (image attached). So guilty...I know. I had already emailed their manager (Chelsea) at this point and finally got a response today (image attached). To no surprise Chelsea doesn't care and for some reason thought I still wanted to be their customer so tried to break it to me gently that our "relationship" was over. Wow Chelsea. Since I live so close I see a short walk and a flaming bag a poo in my future soon. Cheers. https://imgur.com/a/FxPRf1g

For those those that missed Dr. Cates's response - that my friends told me he deleted. It gave us all a good laugh today.

UPDATED per the owners snarky, defensive and insulting comment back - Dr. Cates. And quite honestly pure gold if you don't take it personally! I also lowered the rating, bc quite honestly he doesn't deserve anyone's business. If the owner of Alberta Vet Care really was a professional, he would have told me on the first visit that he didn't think he was the right fit for me and dog at the time. Unfortunately it too me 8 years, lots of money and a good amount of recent medical need that we are best suited with a vet that has both compassion for our pets and respect for the owners. Not only are his comment unprofessional, he's rude, judgmental and insulting to me...for being his client since he's been in business! Every other vet and specialist now that we've gone to has been able to take time to explain the ins and outs of what they think is going on with Mason in a clear and compassionate way - and there have been a few Drs at AVC that do - but they all seem to leave - I wonder why. We've given Mason a wonderful life (Dr. Cates, I'm impressed you took your time to take a look at our adventures). For a 14.5 year old dog with diagnosed kidney disease and seizures among other things and all under control at this moment, I'd say we're taking quite good care of him. Instead of a defensive vet, I'd quite prefer someone who wants to be another part of that equation in helping to ensure our senior dog lives the most comfortable he can during this time. __________________________________________________________________________ I took my senior dog here for roughly 8 years and always had a bit of an uneasy feeling depending on who I was talking to. For a few years there we really loved Dr. Kimmel and kept bringing our dog there. Fast forward to the pandemic and a 14 y/o dog and 1 year old puppy and we're finally moving on and going elsewhere. Overall there was always a bit of a money comes first sense we got from the way the clinic has been run. Most recently we've been getting news via email with links and no indication on severity of situation or urgency. It's felt like they tend to medicate over trying to figure out the root cause of the issue. If we have any follow up questions, which we always have, they lean towards scheduling an appt at an extra fee. I can only imagine the toll the pandemic has places on these businesses and have tried to be understanding but in the end, I don't trust that this clinic or the way it's run will be the best place to address any further issues with my now very senior pup. I would agree with some of the other reviews here about the owner. I only had a few interactions with him, but the most notable was when he told me over the phone that my dog's teeth were a mess after a dental cleaning & extraction. I was already worried about his well-being and that felt very unprofessional and uncompassionate, seeing his defensive comments here really hit me hard and we certainly a big-ol-red-flag to take our pups elsewhere. I hope this review helps with anyone else wanting a compassionate and more intuitive/natural approach to pet care.

I can't say enough good things about AVC. We began taking our German Shepherd puppy to Alberta Veterinary Care when we got her two months ago. As soon as you walk in, they weigh your dog and then you go straight to an exam room. I really appreciate that because it eliminates the waiting room interaction with other animals which can be super stressful for a nervous pup. We've seen 3 different doctors, all of which have been very kind, professional, and informational. Their techs are very kind as well. We have never had to wait more than 5 minutes to see a tech or doctor. They're very punctual. The first doctor we saw (Dr. Cates) made sure to extensively talk to us about our breed, explaining all of the different socialization that she needed to endure within the next few months. All of the doctors explain everything in detail and are sure to answer questions that you have. Perhaps my second favorite part about AVC is that they email you a full report with notes about your visit. It's super convenient and you can reference it later instead of scrambling to write down notes during your visit. Oh, and you pay for everything in your exam room instead of having to do it at the front on your way out.

Another happy and healthy check up!

Thank you so much to Dr. Cates and all of the fabulous AVC team for our furry family's recent visits. We especially appreciate all of the extra precautions that your clinic is taking to stay safe and open during the COVID pandemic.

Just had Ax's first appointment at Alberta Veterinary Care and wow, what a breath of fresh air! Lower cost, more welcoming environment, & attention to detail (like checkout in the room so there's not chaos of dogs in the lobby), etc. 5 stars all the way!!! Thanks Justin! They are probably going to be able to save the tooth AND the total cost is about HALF of VCA!

Last month, my young, healthy cat Ellie broke her leg. I was not in a good financial position and I was not anticipating vet bills so soon after adopting a healthy kitten. Two different vets told me that repairing the break would be difficult and costly and recommend amputation. So, I looked around and called every vet in town. Alberta Veterinary Clinic was able to do the surgery for the most reasonable price and I could not be happier with the level of care Ellie received. Her incision healed like a dream with no complications. I felt, overwhelmingly, like the staff at Albeta cared about me and my cat. They accommodated my busy work schedule to take care of us. We recieved caring, individual attention over the phone, as well as in the office. I will be taking my cat to Alberta for any of her further veterinary needs and recommending the clinic to any other pet owner I know. I can't believe how reasonable their prices are (standard for the area, but with far more individual attention). If I could rate more than 5 stars, I would. I'm sure any pet parent would agree that their pet is worth the very best level of care, and they will find it here. Ellie has a long, happy life ahead of her thanks to the loving attention of her vets. We thank Alberta for our continued time together!

I was told by my two friends watching her that she was well taken care of, they answered my international calls quickly, and even sent a card in the mail within just a couple of days. While I want to acknowledge that some members of your staff were incredibly compassionate, the overall experience was made significantly more painful due to the actions of one of your representatives, Kev. His lack of compassion, professionalism, and awareness during such a sensitive time left both myself and my daughter deeply upset. When we arrived, my daughter went inside to check us in while I remained in the car with Sophia. We had specifically hoped to use the side entrance to minimize any additional stress for Sophia, who was already in distress. Kev refused to allow my daughter to check us in because I was listed as the primary owner even after my daughter explained she was a family member. The only information that needed to be confirmed was my phone number, address, and email address, all information my daughter could have confirmed. Instead, I was forced to walk into the lobby while crying and emotionally overwhelmed. This lack of flexibility showed very little understanding of the situation. Once we were escorted into a room, Kev returned to review paperwork and discuss payment. Prior to our visit, I had contacted Dove Lewis prior to verify what charges I would be responsible for. Despite explaining that I had already confirmed these details, Kev argued with me while I was sitting there holding my dying dog in my lap. During such an emotional moment, the last thing anyone should have to do is debate billing. The vet assistant who cared for Sophia before the procedure was exceptionally kind, compassionate, and respectful. She carefully prepared Sophia, brought her back so we could spend our final moments together, and gently explained that we could notify the staff when we were ready. Her compassion made a tremendous difference during an incredibly painful time. The vet who performed Sophia's euthanasia was equally compassionate and handled the procedure with dignity and empathy. We are sincerely grateful for the care both of these individuals provided.  After Sophia had passed and we had spent time saying our final goodbyes, my daughter informed the staff that we were ready for them to take her. Kev entered the room and asked if we were ready to proceed with the euthanasia, completely unaware that the procedure had already been completed. This demonstrated a troubling lack of communication among the staff and forced us to relive an incredibly painful moment unnecessarily. To make matters worse, after realizing the procedure had already been completed, we handed Sophia over to Kev wanting to leave peacefully with our grief.  Instead while holding our dog in his arms Kev started to discuss a refund that was owed and wanted to know what card to refund to. I was completely inconsolable after saying goodbye to our loved one and this was an incredibly insensitive and inappropriate time to bring up financial matters. I told him that we would call to take care of it. After that conversation, rather than staying behind with Sophia and simply allowing us to leave the room and grieve privately as we exited, Kev continued to follow us out of the room and down the hall to the exit all while carrying our pet. There was no need to escort us out as we had entered through the same side entrance. Throughout this time, he continued speaking to us while carrying Sophia in a way that was deeply upsetting. Her head was dangling over his arm without the care and dignity that I believe every family expects their beloved pet to receive after they have passed. Seeing our loved one handled in that manner was completely heartbreaking, and it is an image that my daughter and I will carry with us for the rest of our lives. This should have been a peaceful opportunity to say goodbye to our cherished family member of 17 years. Instead, multiple interactions with Kev made an already devastating experience even more painful. Families facing end of life decisions deserve empathy, patience, clear communication, and compassionate treatment. Unfortunately, that was not what we experienced from him. I sincerely hope this feedback is taken seriously.

TL;DR - Our dog was misdiagnosed by one of the doctors at Brooklyn Yard, which led to a cancerous tumor growing for months. It was not responsive to any kind of treatment by the time she was properly diagnosed, and my sweet girl has since passed. I discovered a new lump on my dog in early December, and the doctor did a fine needle aspiration. Instead of sending it to a pathologist, she assumed it was a lipoma given my dog's history and the fact she couldn't see any "cellular activity." This led countless back and forth visits to Brooklyn Yard, and their urgent care, Spruce, along with thousands spent in testing and imaging. For months, they led us in circles, insistent it wasn't cancer, despite my poor girl presenting so many symptoms that I now know are common for mast cell tumors. All it took to properly diagnose my dog was another fine needle aspiration, which a specialist sent to a pathologist. This is what Brooklyn Yard should have done to begin with. By this point, though, her tumor was too large and complex for surgery, and treatments like palladia and chemo were not effective. Also, when Brooklyn Yard first received the updated medical records and diagnosis from our specialist, their team called us, not to apologize or offer support, but to tell me they were canceling my dog's upcoming dental cleaning. They have yet to reach out since her passing last month. I am absolutely devastated and can't help but think how different things could have been if we hadn't put so much trust in the doctors at Brooklyn Yard. I miss my girl so much and will never be able to trust another animal in their care.
