The vet techs at this hospital are so kind, accommodating, and care about the animals--they helped make a stressful situation a little easier. The facility itself is also clean and welcoming. That said, pet owners should know that this hospital charges the highest end of the quoted estimate upfront, before any treatment is performed or officially approved. I've never experienced that kind of billing practice at any other veterinary hospital, and it caught me off guard. I brought my dog in for an intestinal blockage, which was already scary. Unfortunately, I found Dr. Sarrazin to be very uncomfortable interacting with people--he seemed extremely nervous and awkward. Instead of feeling reassured, I left the interaction more anxious. Honestly, the vet techs were much more comforting and easier to communicate with than the vet himself, which is not what you hope for in an emergency. read more

I went there years ago. I think the vet was Dr. Elliot? I felt very good leaving my dog there but the prices these guys charge? Ugh!! cracked me up how they wouldn't even touch my dog until they made sure the debit card went through. frankly I was kinda disgusted that they wouldn't even touch my dog until they got every penny upfront. Thank you Sunstone for treating our little guy with an ACL tear with compassion and caring and for doing such a great job on his surgery. Other than some issues with the staff calling in medications on time and having to make some trips back and forth due to that the whole experience with them has been great. The cost was hard to bear and we worried that our dog would be in too much pain and that potentially we wouldn't be helping him by doing the surgery but they were very honest with us about his chances, he's a smaller dog and they tend to heal faster and better. We went for it and I'm eternally grateful we did. We took him on a little trip to the beach the other day. I swear this little guy could go all day! We didn't let him, we're taking it easy with him still but he is more than back to his old self and his post-surgical X-rays look great! Be aware that they charge the upper end for testing. I suggest calling your regular vet before agreeing to their charges to see if they can run those same tests for cheaper. I wasn't in an emergency situation, so I wish I would have taken the time to do this. I went there with my dog to determine if there was something we were missing internally with the symptoms he was having. After the consult it was determined that we should do a UA and check his thyroid, but that continued care with an internal medicine vet was not needed. These tests are things that my regular vet could have done and any thyroid issue could be further managed with my regular vet. I had no problem paying the higher price for the consult, as that is to be expected at a specialty vet. But the price for the thyroid testing was much higher than I expected and I asked if that test could be run at my regular vet for cheaper. The doctor said "no." I later contacted my vet (should have done it prior to agreeing to the lab work) and they said they could have done the thyroid test for $74. Sunstone charged me $554.25. I am aware that there are some differences in the testing and Sunstones is more comprehensive, but we were testing for hypothyroidism, which can be checked for in the less expensive, less comprehensive test. Taking my cat to Sunstone Veterinary Specialists was one of the best things I ever did for her health. Without exception, everyone on the team is polite, professional, friendly, and trustworthy. The company motto is "Work is love made manifest," and it really shows. One of the many things I love about Dr. Debra Klaser, vet tech Jennifer, and veterinary assistant Arlene is their excellent listening skills, clear communication, and detailed note-taking. After every visit, I receive a multi-page clinical summary in my email that outlines everything there is to know about my cat. It is far more detailed than the clinical information I've gotten from any other veterinary office in the Portland area. Not only does it satisfy my curiosity as a layperson, it provides other veterinary offices and hospitals with crucial information they might need in order to coordinate care. When I recently took my cat to a veterinary emergency hospital, I had just enough foresight to print out my cat's latest clinical summary from Sunstone and bring it with me so that the emergency vet on duty could quickly get up to speed on my cat's lengthy and complex medical history. The vet said it was super-helpful of me to bring that paperwork to her, adding, "This is why I love getting information from Sunstone! They provide so much detail." Sunstone's location is very good too. They recently moved to a new, more spacious office building with ample parking. You'll find it just a few blocks south of Halsey. They have also opened an emergency room of their own, which they did not have at their old location, so if you live in or near the Gateway neighborhood, you now have a convenient place to go in the event of an emergency. read more

The veterinarian we met with seemed pretty inexperienced and began grasping at random scenarios when she was unable to readily identify the cause of my dogs gastro intestinal upset. Additionally, they caused one of his toenails to rip out and charged me $156 to clean it and put a Band-Aid on it in addition to the charges for the procedures that I had agreed to! Taking your companion animal to a specialist is never fun. You know it's going to be expensive and you're probably not going to get great news. When my regular vet said my geriatric kitty had lost 2 lbs since his last exam and needed an abdominal ultrasound, they recommended Sunstone. The current COVID-19 requirements made it so I sat in my car and spoke with the technician and then the doctor over the phone before they saw my kitty. I was nervous how that would go since I don't have a relationship with them, but everyone from the receptionist, to the tech Arlene, to the internal medicine specialist Dr. Debra Klaser were so comforting to speak with. Is bedside manner over the phone a "thing"? I guess it is now, and they have mastered it! After going over my kitty's history in detail and the concerns that brought us to the specialist, they came and took him inside. I was able to leave a deposit and sign paperwork on my phone. They called me when he was done a few hours later and Dr. Klaser went over her findings in great detail. She made recommendations and assured me multiple times that she felt I was making good choices for him. I hope I'm not in need of a specialty veterinary clinic any time soon, but if I am, I will definitely head back to Sunstone. read more

Vet care is good, but prices are outrageous. My dog was well cared for, the staff was friendly and the facility was nice. They got her in and out quickly and I'm thankful for the care. I was shocked to see the bill. I regularly buy two of the meds that were prescribed for my dog (for another one of my dogs), so I'm very well aware of the prices. $81 for a medicine that retails for $17 is unacceptable. $30 for 15 pills which typically cost $4.35. We all complain about being overcharged for medications and ask for fair prices. This goes for vets too. They have you at their whim, they are your pharmacy. In retrospect, I would have refused the medications beyond the first day and asked for a prescription to buy them elsewhere. No one wants to leave a medical emergency feeling gauged due to being vulnerable--and this is how I left feeling. read more

After a few months of ups and downs with Micah, Dr. Elliott finally recommended surgical biopsies of most of his major organs to find the origin of what was going on. Thankfully, the surgery was "unremarkable" other than some inflammation, a sigh of relief for this dog-mom. Due to Micah's frequent vomiting/diarrhea, Dr. Elliott recommended that he begin on a life-course of steroid medications for IBD/IBS. Something in my gut cautioned me against this solution and I reached out to a holistic vet for evaluation. After one year now of putting Micah on a raw food diet, I can tell you that Micah's labs are 100% perfect. They actually resolved to perfect within 90 days of his raw food diet. I'm so glad that I trusted my gut. He has minor and infrequent GI upset (like once every 3-4 months) and is doing perfectly. For my little guy, the raw food diet worked and he doesn't have to be on medicine for the rest of his life. I'm sure this is the exception more than the rule, but I want other dog parents to know that this is a solution, if you can afford it. I also want to leave a shout out to the fantastic surgeon, Dr. Su and her staff. I'm attaching pictures of the progression of how well Micah's surgical site healed. My only regret is that I let this surgery happen. Don't wait like I did. Take your pup to the holistic vet first if something in your gut says there's another way. Just to be clear, I in no way think that Dr. Elliott did anything wrong. He offered a diagnosis and set a course of treatment. I'm just happy that there was a different solution for my pup and that we have a happy ending. read more

I cannot emphasize enough how grateful we are for the Sunstone team. Dr. Klaser is Dakota's amazing internal medicine specialist and Dr. Su is her great surgeon. Before reaching Sunstone Dakota was suddenly very ill. Her regular vet had theories, the docs on the morning shift at the emergency hospital had one theory, the doc on the afternoon shift had others, plus all kinds of catastrophic sounding finding from the ultrasound doc... it was with this huge amount of conflicting opinions and reams of tests that we arrived at Sunstone and consulted with Sunstone's wonderful internal medicine specialist Dr. Klaser. Dr. Klaser and her team took in all the records and images we had and did the most in-depth history and physical we'd ever experienced. Dr. Klaser helped us narrow down Dakota's primary issue and held a slot on Dr. Su's surgery schedule. Dakota had surgery and has since recovered very well. Communication during surgery was fantastic. Opinion regarding Dr. Su. We were very disappointed with this practice, surgeon, and the lack of post-operative care available. Our dog had a mammary mass removal near her groin. Post-operatively, we were counseled that there was a lot of tension on the incision site and Dr. Su was expecting it to dehisce/open up - she removed the mass and pulled the skin so tight to close, that the tissue lost blood flow and became necrotic. The dog did well until day 3 when she developed ecchymosis and swelling of her abdomen. We were dismissed when we reported signs a surgical site infection - necrotic and foul smelling drainage, lethargy, edema, etc. We were told that this was not likely an infection, but the necrotic drainage was "how dog blood smells." When the 10 inch incision opened up to the size of a baseball, she did not offer any wound care suggestions or offer to culture the drainage from the wound. Immediately, we ended up seeking three opinions and each of those consults recommended an entirely different initial surgical technique, suggested that the dog's complications were avoidable, and recommended we ask for our money back. Sunstone did refund us $5162 without any challenge or pushback. This was enough confirmation and validation that the second opinions were correct. We had to apply those funds to a corrective second surgery to take a surgical flap of skin to cover a baseball sized hole that would never heal on her abdomen from complete incision failure. We actually never did meet Dr. Su, despite multiple office and phone conversations - it was almost like she was hiding. In the end, our story has a happy ending for us and our dog. So, how do you vet a vet? You can't. We were referred by VCA and trusted the referral. If I knew that every time we called, Dr. Su was "in surgery", was the only surgeon at Sunstone, and cannot be reached from Friday-Sunday to discuss subtle concerns of complications... Everybody I've interacted with here has been super nice and helpful. I've been taking my cat to see Dr Tobin for several months, as he developed kidney disease and hypertension. She is fantastic; so is Jen, who always works with her when I'm there. They are so sweet with my cat, and Dr Tobin is incredibly thoughtful and deliberate with her medical decision making. When your vet tells you that she thinks your dog needs to see a veterinary cardiologist, your own heart skips a beat. It then gets louder until you can hear it pounding in your ears. We recently purchased a 7-year old dog, a breed known for heart issues. I was nervous bringing her in to see Dr. Rausch at Sunstone, my neighborhood specialist clinic. I only had her a few weeks, but I was head over heals for this gal and looking forward to years together. My whole appointment from start to finish was great. I did not got back with her initially - I waited in their spacious and comfortable client area, trying to do some work while worrying about what they were finding with her tests. When they were done with her tests, I went back to see the doctor. He very patiently explained to me what they found and what it means. It was a lot of information. Some of it technical. But he drew pictures and helped me digest it all. A few days later I received the written report via email. So I have a dog with a heart condition. But I feel comforted knowing that I also have a specialist vet team that can monitor her and keep her on track for what I hope will be years to come. I love their location. I love their compassion. I love their ability to communicate highly technical data to a layperson. I love that they will do what they can to keep my girl comfortable as she gets older and her disease progresses. read more

I was excited to have Dr. Su see my cat for a consultation for a tumor removal. I went there in 20 degree weather for the appointment, with my cat stressed out and meowing the whole way. Unfortunately, it turns out that this vet hospital only cares about making money. I was quoted $3000-$3500 for a pea-sized mass removal and $1500 for diagnostics (blood work, abdominal ultrasound). I feel taken advantage of, especially after I paid $220 for the consultation. I understand they are a specialty vet hospital, but I didn't even pay $3500 when my late cat had a double chain mastectomy done by a board certified vet. surgeon. Other specialty vet clinics with board certified vet surgeons also have lower consultation costs (up to 50% lower). Sunstone should be ashamed of themselves for taking advantage of people and charging ridiculous prices. This is price-gouging at its finest. It's not right and this place should be avoided at all costs. Seeing houseless people in tents next to Sunstone's building was a sickening juxtaposition considering they make so much money from their overpriced services. Shameful. read more

From the moment I walked in to the moment I left I was not disappointed. The lobby was beautiful- like a hotel. Clean, modern, and warm. While being checked in to my appointment I helped myself to a hot tea and a fresh pastry. The seating was comfortable and my dog seemed at ease. I was greeted by Dr. Tobin's technician, Gen. She got a complete history of my dog, Leo. As someone who works in veterinary medicine, I can appreciate how thorough she was with getting every detail. Once Gen was done, we waited for Dr. Tobin to come in to discuss a long-term plan for my dog's newly diagnosed Addison's disease. The exam rooms were small but comfortable. Pheromone plug-ins were in the room to help keep animal visitors calm. The exam room doors were sliding pocket doors which was a nice surprise as my dog did not have to get up off of the floor to allow the door to open. Dr. Tobin arrived and did a complete head-to-toe exam of Leo. It surprised me as she adjusted parts of her exam around details of Leo's history I would have never thought to consider. She walked us through all of the questions we had surrounding the specifics of his Addison's and what to expect. She was clear, concise, and courteous. She had all of the bedside manner that I sought while also giving me the honest answers I needed. We are so thankful for Dr. Rousch & Dr. Elliott. We have seen Dr. Rousch for almost ten years of care relating to our cat's high blood pressure & heart health. Dr. Rousch has given her echocardiograms & monitored her high blood pressure for all of those years. He was confident & capable of working around our kitty's allergies (medication related) & anxiety about being in the doctor's office (as most cats don't like traveling outside of their homes). We needed Dr. Elliott's help once our kitty's kidneys started failing from old age. He was able to assess, diagnose & offer us options to support our cat & make her as comfortable as possible. Dr. Elliott asked us many times if we "had any questions" that he could answer for us. This was so thoughtful. Often in this process we were overwhelmed, and this kind reminder would help us move from a feeling of shock to the proactive stage of asking questions. My husband and I often didn't have questions because Dr. Elliott explained everything so thoroughly and in layman's terms, not just medical terminology. Our sweet kitty has passed away, her kidney failure was terminal. Dr. Elliott was supportive of our progress, not rushing us, but he was also realistic and honest and let us know that she didn't have much time left with us. The whole Sunstone office is gorgeous. They have a beautiful living room like feeling the second you walk in. There are little tables right next to the comfy chairs to put pet carriers on so you can be near your pet if you'd like. There is a bountiful table with drinks and pastries for you to enjoy while you wait. The staff, from the people at the front desk to the nurse who takes your info before the doctor arrives, are kind, patient and warm. We received a card with warm condolences from all the staff after our kitty's passing. It was that kind of thoughtfulness that was so helpful and comforting in such a rough time of our lives. I took my dog in months ago for surgery. Dr. Regina Tobin decided not to take the papilloma out of his mouth like we planned and paid for. I won't mention the cost, because l will spend my life saving to save my dog. She did a biopsy on his throat and called a few days later and said bad news he has cancer and has 2 months. It's been almost 6 months approximately and he would have been way better off if they would have just done what we had planned on in the first place. It was just so obvious with everyone I spoke to or interacted with how much they care about their patients. They took very good care of my dog. My primary vet referred me because my dog has potential kidney issues, and they were very thorough doing their exam to ensure there weren't other problems that could be causing his issues. I'm providing an update after a year from the malpractice done to my animal. Which I will share the original review again after this update. This last year has been one of the hardest times I've experienced when it comes to the care of my dog. The doctors here performed a procedure that we never spoke of which has lead to my dogs rapid decline in heath over the last year. She has been disabled with complete inability to use her front left arm anymore. Which has degraded her back limbs at an exponential rate because of the compensation of losing her front left arms mobility. Not only has this experience traumatized my dog and degraded her quality of life but it has mentally traumatized me, my quality of life, and mental heath. The amount of stress this clinic has put on my life and my pet is one of the worst things that has happened to me in my adult life. While they did try to make amends with me financially, it has not been enough when it comes to all the medical care, loss of work, and expenses that have come after taking on this new way of life for my dog and I. There is no dollar amount that could fix the way I feel or fix what has happened to my dog. --Last years review below-- I don't like writing bad reviews but you should not bring your pets to this clinic. While yes the doctors and administration are nice, and the facility looks nice too, each time I saw a doctor here for my dogs condition, they only made everything worse with every visit. From performing surgical procedures that were not discussed prior to signing the waiver, to not giving any kind of courtesy call during the surgery to even communicate about what the "next steps" should be. Post surgery (now weeks later) my dogs condition has gotten worse than before the procedure. When wanting to make post surgical check-ups due to complications from procedure and medications, I was charged for exam fees (which I've never done post surgery at any other vet). Then when trying to make another appointment I was told to go see someone else. $3000 later, I'm left with a dog in much worse shape, a doctor that admitted "I made the wrong call" and the trauma of the whole experience. All in all, take your pets elsewhere. Sorry Sunstone, but it would be a tragedy if you did the same to someone else's animal. read more

I brought my dog here for an abdominal ultrasound on referral from his cardiologist, Dr. Atkinson at Heart of Oregon. We saw Dr. Tobin, and the entire experience was very comforting, from the moment that we first made contact with the receptionist via phone until the final bill was paid and the medical record received. It's during Covid times, which may have impacted the wait, but we did wait in the parking lot for 15 minutes or so before we were contacted by the tech for check in, medical history, etc. My dog is an anxious (but sweet) one, and it was still completely worth the wait. Don't let that phase you. This clinic was totally upfront about costs before the appointment, which is unfortunately not universal at clinics in Portland, and gave all the information long before the appointment time so I had plenty of time to make decisions and think things over. With my dog's heart condition, I was sure I did not want him sedated, which can make imaging an animal more difficult. I had previously taken him to another clinic that tried to surprise me at check in with hundreds of dollars in additional costs and forced sedation - this experience was the opposite of that. So glad we walked out of there and came here. Dr. Tobin noticed that my dog was anxious and called me directly after checking him in inside to let me know and get the go ahead to start the procedure as quickly as possible. As soon as I said yes to the procedure, she had techs getting him prepped to get started without delay while she finished the conversation with me, ensuring that she understood my intentions around no sedation and handling of the dog. They made sure to keep him as calm as possible while keeping me updated and moving the appointment forward quickly and thoroughly. Dr. Tobin was very knowledgeable and easy to talk to and came outside to speak to me directly after the procedure. I couldn't recommend this clinic more. read more

At first we had faith in this office but it's MONTHS later and he flinches every time you startle him, he has horrible nightmares and if your not careful when you try and wake him he snips at you out of fear. We have a happy home, NEVER has he flinched like he does now, they sent him home while he was still groggy....after a night in the hospital still "cant walk" groggy? Exceptional is the word that comes to mind when I think of the care and treatment that Dr. Tobin has provided to the dogs in my life. Goliath, with his Cushing's and Bear with his Addison's. Gratitude is another word that comes to mind. Both words fall short in their description. A pet owner going to see a specialist means that a specialist is needed and for pet owners that in itself can be terrifying. We are looking for cures, hope, and miracles in some cases and I cannot imagine the weight that might bring to those who treat the ones we love.
