Leaving 3 stars instead of 5 for a few reasons. We ordered a gyro plate to share, menu priced at ~$17.99. We both ordered water and were charged $27 at the register. At which rate we should have each ordered out own plate and took home leftovers. Sometimes guests, such as us, order based on not being wasteful versus to be cheap. That did hurt a bit. Stopped here for lunch as it was close to the hotel and not a fast food burger. I was looking for something quick but light. Tucked away in a strip mall it a quaint little place. Lots of pictures of customers and memorabilia. The man who greeted me (owner I assume) sat me down and took my drink order. He got it to me quick and I ordered the Gyro Pita Salad. Took about 5 minutes. Had some house oil dressing and a house sauce for the pita. It was all very good. Good balance of feta cheese and vegetables. Missed the olives though. As I sat there I noticed a lot of take out orders. Overall good experience. Staff was friendly and place was very clean. I am here for a week so I want to head back and try the Gyro. read more

I so wanted to like this place. The staff really are amazing, super friendly, warm people. Sadly, the food just did not really rate a good review. I chose the gyro and fries and while the fries were ok (they could have been a bit more seasoned), the gyro really was just not good. The gyro was bland and even more so, when dissecting it, the meat looked more like beef slices than gyro meat and was very bland. The tzatziki was tasteless and honestly did not taste or look like the cucumber in a yogurt sauce that is the heart of a gyro. It was also kind of small and the price tag was just under ten dollars. I have been meaning to try this place for years. My daughter arrived for a late lunch around 2 on a Tues. The place was empty except for the owner/manager. He quickly seated us and brought us our drinks while we looked through the menu. The interior is comforting and quaint. Even their front windows had a decorative valance (yes I had to Google that). The Pita Cafe specializes in Mediterranean cuisine. It was a simple informative menus (no pictures) with varied choices from lamb to shrimp, hummus, meat pies, and chicken. Our appetizer homemade vegetable soup was very good. Thick and warm with ample veggies. I liked the mushrooms in it. My daughter ordered the Steak-n-Sack. She loved it. I tried it and also thought it was delicious. It was a different type of meal because they serve the meat inside a hollowed out half of a pita bread. It was served with delicious freshly fried fries. I tried the gyro sandwich. It was also delicious. Not anything out of the ordinary, but very well cooked, served with ample meat, sauce, tomatoes, and lettuce. It was also served with freshly cooked fries sprinkled with seasoned salt. Everything tasted great. Great service. Good food. Nothing wrong with that. read more

Good Lebanese and Mediterranean food is hard to find and I believe that we found a good one! I wasn't that hungry and now I'm glad that I decided to order something to eat. My husband is picky about kefta and this place did not disappoint. It had flavor and we loved the fries that were served alongside of his shawarma. The Pita Cafe (TPC) is a mediocre Greek restaurant located in a strip mall with zero vibe. A friend brought me to TPC, which she hyped as "wonderful". TPC is anything but "wonderful". We were greeted by the owner who knew my friend. Within 15 second of sitting down he asked for our drink order. I'd just flew in to Birmingham from Texas and wanted a few minutes to chat with my friend. I told the owner I did not know what I wanted to drink. It seemed like that was a major affront to the man as in "how can you come to a restaurant and not know what you want to drink". Anyway moving on to the rest of the evening. It's around 7pm when we arrive. This place closes at 8pm. The owner and his wife want to go home and they make that clear to you as soon as you place your order. I asked, "Do you have any wine". The owned beamed in response to my question and said I could have my pick between a Cabernet or a White Zin. Neither are wines I'd offer my worse enemy. Yet, I'd had a long flight and was hankering for a glass of wine settling for the Cabernet. But before ratifying my decision I asked the owner if he had any Greek wines, e.g. Retsina, etc. He didn't? Really? It's a Greek restaurant and you don't have any Greek wines? After a while my friend and I placed our orders. I selected the combination plate which is a skewer of Kibby and a skewer of vegetables. The owner talked me out of the order because he said he would take too long to make. Too long? Yes, about thirty minutes. I said I was fine waiting. But he refused to put in the order. He brought his wife out of the kitchen. She's the cook. He had her tell me that this entree would take a long time. Again, I told the owner I had no problem waiting. He kept persuading me to make another selection. Finally, I acquiesced and ordered a kibby pita sandwich with a side of Tabouleh. The pita sandwich was served on an untoasted pita and virtually tasteless. The side of Tabouleh amounted to like three spoonfuls of a soggy side dish. On a scale of 1-10 both the pita sandwich and the Tabouleh get ratings of 2 (out of 10) and that's been incredibly generous. I've been to a good number of Greek restaurants over the years and the Pita Cafe easily falls into the bottom percentile. My final ranking = Two Thumbs Down. read more

Located in an older strip mall. Parking is tight and sometimes hard to find depending on what time of day you visit. I've only ever gone for lunch. Mom and Pop establishment, Mike runs the floor, she cooks. Very welcoming and laid back feel, it's kinda like eating at your relatives place. The furnishings are a bit old, out of date, but they are clean. There isn't a ton of seating, but I have never had to wait. Every time I go I've tried something new. The first time I went I got the lunch Gyro with French Fries. It is good, fresh pita, nicely marinated meat, tasty sauce (could have used more in my opinion) overall a good meal. The French fries are sprinkled with that amazing Greek seasoning, so good, a bit heavy sometimes, but I am very salt sensitive so it would probably be fine for anyone else. I've also had the Falafel plate. It comes with hummus and pita, wild rice and fresh fruit. You have the choice of a salad or Tabouli (dude, I have absolutely no idea how to spell that, there were four different spellings when I went to look it up!). This is what keeps me coming back! The best tabouli I've ever had. They use a ton of parsley, literally you are eating a parsley salad with tabouli mixed in and balanced perfectly with herbs and spices. So refreshing! I thought the Falafels were a little dry but they were well flavored. Because the falafels were well spiced, but I felt they were dry I tried the falafel sandwich. Bingo! The same great falafels, but with sauce. We are talking the perfect amount of sauce, it wasn't smothered nor was it to skimpy. I also got to have the tabouli as my side. Best meal I've had there so far and they have all been good. The only gripe is my husbands, not mine. He says that every time he goes, his drink glass empties and he has to wait for a refill. There are a bunch of Greek restaurants in the area. Pita Café's food is authentic, and the right price. Don't get me wrong you can end up spending a good chunk on lunch, but the amount and quality justifies the prices. So worth a stop if you like Greek food and if you are with someone that doesn't they have standard American food also. read more

It is located in a nondescript shopping center which is where you are likely to find gems like this. The decor is nice but it won't overwhelm you. You will find a Greek mom-and-pop running the place. While they may not be excessively chatty, they take your order and make your food well and right then. The Pita Cafe specializes in Mediterranean dishes. This is a small family run restaurant that is located in the same strip mall as Tortugas. The owners are friendly and provide personal service. The health rating on the last visit was a perfect 100. I have had the Gyro wrap and Gyro plate and would highly recommend both. The Gyro meat is sliced into thin strips and is tender and flavorful. We are huge fans of Mediterranean foods, especially a good baba ganoush! They have some out door tables with umbrellas and a good area with tables and booths inside. We were seated quick, servers were very kind. Our drink orders were taken immediately (they have bottles of several beers for $2.75) and served in a frost glass bonus!! The appetizer plate had olives, tomatoes, cheese, 2 falafel, hummus, baba ganoush and pita. Very fresh and everything was so tasty! Top baba ganoush and hummus! The pita was cold but soft and fresh- would have enjoyed it heated a little but not a big deal, just a preference. Our Greek salad was huge! Lots of tomato, onion, cucumber, cheese and served with outa and a Greek dressing like I'd never had before. It was a oil and vinegar dressing but had some spice which Had a little heat. Nice flavors. As a last thought we got some baklava- honestly most I've gotten have been a little disappointing. But after taking to one of the ladies and seeing her eyes light up with a passion for her foods- decided to try a piece. They have 4 flavors: coconut, date, pistachio and walnut. Of course we asked her favorite and immediately she said walnut, but followed by pistachio was her second favorite. We opted for walnut. OMGosh! It is the best ever! The phyllo dough for crust was multi-layers, flakey, a little crisp but not in the least dry! Biting into the filling of walnut was a dream a combination of lightly sweet, nutty and rich buttery flavors all married together making a party in my mouth. Honestly, it was that good! Love this place! If you are looking for some seriously good Mediterranean food then go here. My husband and I have been going here for years, but I recently joined Yelp so I will tell you of this week's visit. I had a tabouli salad, consistently the best! Just the right amount of lemon juice and garlic and served cold with little pieces of feta on top. Yum! And of course the hummus. I love these two dishes together because it's just enough.
