Found this cute place on a drive through Sandpoint and decided to stop. My husband and I shared a piece of the huckleberry rhubarb with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The combination of huckleberry and rhubarb was delicious and the crust was nice and flaky. There was a good portion of fruit filling in the middle but I felt that the edges of crust could have been a little thicker. About one month ago I went to the Pie Hut. I have always loved this place, but last week I called to order lunch and someone on the phone was quite rude. I looked on facebook for their menu prior to calling but the menu was the size of a credit card, and I was not able to see it. So I asked what kind of soup they had and what sandwiches they had. The lady was very rude and said we don't have time for this, we are in the middle of lunch. I called early at 11:30 am for that reason and that was the purpose of my call was to order lunch. I was so surprised at her response and was very disappointed. I did call back to let them know I would not be coming to pick up my half order (she never even let me finish my order) said she was too busy and I would have to come in.. I did call back to let them know that I was not coming back, because I did not want to stoop to their level and be rude by not coming to pick up my order. I will try again, and give this person the benefit of the doubt, (maybe they were having a bad day) but I will not come back if I am treated like that in the future. -- read more

There isn't a single thing I can complain or critique about this place. It's casual, cozy, and homey with amazing food. Kind of tight seating, but as soon as you settle in you forget about that. The combos are definitely the way to go, you get to try a little bit of everything and trust me..that's what you want to do! We had custom sandwiches, French onion and split pea soup, and pie to finish. Everything was as fresh as it could be, and if you're having trouble deciding on the menu don't be afraid to ask the staff for a recommendation they are super friendly and helpful. What a horrible place. After the server placed an uncooked pile of slop in front of me, and I took one bite which literally made me gag (I'm not exaggerating), and I couldn't eat any more, the server came over packed full of attitude and accused me of having no taste. Then she left the disgusting mess on the table, wouldn't even take it away, and just walked away with a smirk on her face, as though she thoroughly enjoyed treating me like gulag prisoner instead of a customer. To add insult to injury, she even made us pay for the garbage. These people should be ashamed of themselves for their horrid food and even worse service. Great comfort food (pot pies, quiche, split-pea soup, clam chowder) and very tasty sandwiches. The Vietnamese banh mi sandwich was among the best that I have ever had. The place is a little cramped and the service is slow, but it has a small town atmosphere so that more than makes up for any shortcomings. My partner and I loved this place. Lunch was great (I got a delicious chowder and sandwich combo). The pie was so good, we came back: lemon sour cream and raspberry rhubarb, and marionberry apple crumble and blueberry. All four were stellar. Add a cute setting and you got yourself a winner. The idea behind this place is really what makes it, the service was okay although I didn't feel super welcome at first. The beef and barley soup was tasty and a good portion but the "club" wasn't as described on the menu. It was SUPER crunchy bread and came out just as a normal half sandwich. We visited Sandpoint from Portland and had the very best pie we have ever eaten - the creme brulee. After having a slice we bought a whole pie! We're both sorry and pleased that this pie is so far away from us - our waistlines would suffer! The pumpkin sausage soup was also delicious with a hint of licorice. This is not the review I wanted to write, but here goes. For those not from Sandpoint, one must understand that the majority of revenues going into restaurants derive from the heavily-touristed summer months. This fact leaves far too many restaurants catering to the summer crowds and kind of dissing the locals. So it is not so easy to find a local restaurant that truly caters to locals. At the same time, one wants to write great reviews of local restaurants as it is good for Sandpoint. We have been to the Pie Hut about a half a dozen times. Here is the breakdown on a 1-10 scale. Food: I am partial to Bahn Mi. But the Bahn Mi here is a 2/10. It is loaded down with an overly salty, soy-based sauce. Not exactly Vietnamese. I love Banh Mi's but would not go back again--three strikes and you are out. Even the soups are too salty, something pointed out each time by the kids. Pie: The pies are OK, but nothing amazing. Rather garden variety. Not sure about the raving. 5/10. Service: Here is where I agree with a number of Yelpers. My goodness, it is awful. My experiences have only been with the same person (the owner?). Whoever it is, she is rude, short, rather mean and seemingly oblivious to the whole idea that while customers are always right and return customers are kings, the local return customer with kids are your bread and butter. We are unlikely to ever return to such nasty experience. I think she is in the wrong business. That said, I see she donates funds to support local causes so that is a good thing. That moves her from one to three, so 3/10. And clearly there are locals who go there. However, she needs lessons on dealing with people and to drop the arrogance. Very un-Sandpointian. Overall, a 4/10, hence 2/5 stars. For pies, the Panhandler people are more genuine Sandpoint. Also, try the key lime pie at Baxter's for dessert. Mmmm!!! For a much better Banh Mi, try Foster's Crossing (although it is a menu special). read more
