Recently, my partner went to the restaurant and was told he was no longer welcome because of that past comment. The owner recognized him, yelled profanities, and called him vulgar names. This interaction was unexpected and inappropriate. Because of the owner's behavior, we won't be returning. I can't recommend this business due to how customers are treated.

But be advised that it's cash only! This is one of the most amazing burger places I have ever visited. The staff is attentive and friendly; you can not go wrong with this family-owned business. Excellent burgers made from scratch. It has been in business since 1934, so it must be doing it right. This place is regularly voted the best burger in the Bluegrass State and lives up to the hype. A perfect slice of Americana, walking into this place feels like going back in time. I had the Double Hamburger, and my wife had the Double Cheeseburger. We also had French Fries and Onion Rings. The onion rings are huge, and the breading does not fall off when you take a bite. If you are ever in Hodgenville, you must try this place!

I was a little dubious about the whole best burger thing as I've been to a few of the past winners, and they were very disappointing. I don't know if it's the best burger in Kentucky but it's definitely in my top 3 burgers I've ever eaten. It's a small quaint little restaurant, a little dark in the front but lit up in back. There's not much seating, a counter at the front window and 3 booths, and a few small tables in the back so assume most people take out. The staff was friendly and greeted us as we walked in. The menu is small which is fine as the main attraction is the burger and they do it very well. They have a grilled a chicken burger, chicken rings and a veggie burger if beef doesn't interest you, but then what's the point? We both got the Bardstown burger, which has grilled onions, mushrooms, cheddar cheese, mayo and bacon though they forgot the bacon, still the first bite of this burger was sublime. The burger was smaller than your typical gourmet burger but was well seasoned and very juicy. The grill onions, mushrooms, cheddar, mayo just added to that delicious beefiness of the burger. You can make your own burger and they have two other signature burgers. The fries and onion rings were crispy and piping hot, nothing special, just good sidekicks to their super burgers.

I should have gotten a double (I know, I know, also get a double when its a smash burger). The fries were seasoned well but for the price, I was hoping for more. I also got a beer. Selection is limited but I'm sure you'll find something acceptable. There's seating in the front and back, so if its looks busy check the back. The ambiance is basic burger shop, nothing really to note. It's counter service so pretty basic there too. For a quick bite and to get a burger fix, this is a good place to stop.

Sunday, 18 January 2026…read more Met friends at J.R. Neighbors for lunch. According to my friend, the have the best burgers in Etown! ‍ There are a few parking spaces directly in front of the restaurant (maybe 5, with 2-3 slots being reserved for handicap). There are nearby parking lots with plenty more parking. As it was a Sunday, we had no trouble finding parking. There were a few people ahead of us, maybe three different parties. My partner and I did not have to wait to be seated since the friends we were meeting had already arrived and got a table. We greeted our friends then reviewed the menu. Since it was around 12ish on a Sunday, only the brunch menu was available. Not long after, our waitress arrived to take drink orders. Shortly after that, and after the drinks arrived - pineapple mimosas, apple juice, and water, we ordered our food...mostly everyone had a burger. I had the Texan burger/sandwich which came on a Texas toast, hence the name, and my partner had the Newberry Smash burger (double). Each came with a choice of "regular" fries or tots. I wanted sweet potato fries, but again, since it was Sunday, only the brunch menu and what was displayed was available. So, I settled for regular fries. My burger was good albeit a bit messy with the sunny side egg running everywhere! The bacon topping the burger was perfectly done with the right crispy/crunchy consistency. My mimosas was refreshing except I did not get much of a pineapple taste. The fries were fresh and appropriately seasoned, not too salty and not too bland, just right. We were all full from our meals so we did not even consider dessert! The restaurant was busy but not overly crowded, so the atmosphere was quite. We sat by the windows and were not even distracted by the outside vehicles passing by. Overall, we had a pleasant experience and would recommend J.R. Neighbors to anyone looking for good burgers in a good atmosphere in Etown.
