First time in tonight and it's safe to say that I was extremely disappointed. I ordered the Alfredo and the sauce was just heavy whipping cream. I never send back food and I had to send it back because it was so inedible. Our server was super nice and accommodating. This place is a waste of your time and money and I ended up walking out and eating nothing and feeling dissatisfied. My boyfriend also didn't like his pasta that he got and said that it was disappointing as well. Don't waste your money, rather order pasta from Wendy's. read more

First time visit a few nights ago. Was concerned about finding a quality dining experience that was cool given the heat warnings outside. I had no reason to be concerned: Phoenix was a great cool atmosphere, nice decor and amazing food and wine. My wife had steak and lobster, I had a peppercorn steak, and we shared a bottle of red and dessert. I highly recommend this restaurant and we will be back when travelling. read more

We were driving from Saskatchewan to Vancouver and stopped here on account of the favorable reviews but what we found was nothing like what we read. In taking a second read across several sites I see now many bad reviews that paint a better truer picture and I have to agree with others that the food was just okay at best, the restaurant was dirty (even saw a mouse) and the service was terrible. I was horrified when I asked who the manager was so I could speak with him/her and it was the very person we received extremely poor hostile service from and not only was she the manager but the owner as well! What a Prima Donna attitude we noticed by the way she treated everyone unless you were constantly kissing her butt. Our water glasses were dirty, the meat was dry, the menus were greasy and sticky and our server inappropriately flirted with my friend's husband which made all 4 of us uncomfortable. Even the table behind us said it was in bad taste. If you are going to charge those prices and write on your website that you're classy then act it! read more

Mediocre at best. After a day of wonderful wine tasting and scrumptious small bites throughout the day, we came here for dinner only to be utterly disappointed and flat out nauseous. The soups we had to start tasted like they came out of can. Zero flavor and watered down. The crab cakes would be better named breading cake. We couldn't even taste any crab, just a fishy taste. Was looking for a nice place to have dinner with my hubby while staying at Sparking Hills resort for our wedding anniversary. The menu looked amazing so we chose this place instead of eating at the fine dining restaurant at the resort. It was a lot more casual than I expected (there were TV's showing the hockey game) Nevertheless, it was cozy and had some really nice private semi-round booths that worked well. There some funky art and exposed brick walls. We started with the French soup and the feature appie- Korean cauliflower with kimchi. It was similar to the ones at Joey's which I love. For dinner, I chose the rack of lamb that came with asparagus and yummy mashed potatoes, and my husband went with the bacon and cheese bbq burger that came with potato wedges which was surprising crunchy even thought they were larger chunks. I knew my meal was amazing because I didn't even notice that I was super full until there was nothing on my plate. It was amazing. For dessert, we shared the chocolate mousse which was perfect. All in all, it was a great experience, the service was excellent, and the food was well worth it - and our bill was just shy of $100 which we were happy to see. I'm not from Vernon but my wife grew up here, so naturally I had a fairly positive feeling about the place just based on her comments about it over the years. Having said that, in the end I can't give this place the 3 stars I wanted to give it. On one hand, anyone calling themselves a "steakhouse" in a small town can't typically be expected to be very sophisticated. However, this one raised my expectations with the smart wine selection and great decor/atmosphere. With better staff in the kitchen this restaurant might get a 4. The skills back there aren't terrible, but they don't match what's implied by the vibe and prices. The steak was about on par with something like The Keg. More emphasis on grill marks than making steak properly. Also, their sauce selection further led me to believe the place had some decent chops in the kitchen. Not really-the demi glace (which staff repeated back to me as demi glaze...yes it's a crappy nitpick and the staff was great, just that details like that really show how sophisticated the restaurant really is under the pretty setup) was definitely not actually demi glace. I also tasted the bearnaise, which did not taste like it was made in-house either. Demi glace cannot be as bland as theirs was, even if a novice fumbled through the steps to make it. Again, while it sounds petty, claiming to have a sauce of such significance to steak is a statement that needs to be backed up. The steak itself was all right but uninspiring. It doesn't take anything fancy to do it right, actually the best do it quite simply. But some basic cooking skills were absent. You can get perfect steak at a Parisian brasserie on a lunch special for less than this restaurant. In summary, this restaurant set its own bar quite high and will achieve that standard with some more passion in the kitchen. Their pricing and atmosphere place it against Intermezzo, but cooking skill is still quite behind. This restaurant faces a tough crossroad--lower prices to reflect the small town steakhouse reality of its food, or increase the standard for what they're producing. This restaurant could easily be a 4 with minor changes. The 2 is hard to give, but the few flaws it has were very significant given how the place is portrayed. read more

I have to say since the new owners took over (Meghan & Charles according to our server) the food here has drastically improved! It is refreshing to find a "Steakhouse" that offers a vegetarian burger that is worthy of an actual steak dinner. We have been here in the past and vowed never to come back, however a friend told us ownership had changed so decided to give it another try. Soooo glad we did. We just had our Christmas party at the Phoenix, and had an AWESOME night! The food was great, the atmosphere was excellent and the Management and staff rolled out the red carpet for us. To my Knowledge, the choices for a steakhouse in Vernon is quite limited. The Phoenix is decent though. They have two floors and the upper has a large patio. Had the weather been nicer, we would have been outside. Even though the weather wasn't the greatest, the interior decor is very nice and comfortable. The waitstaff is friendly and food was good. Try the yorkshire pudding appy. Can't remember what they call it, but it's great! read more

What an incredible disappointment! The food was so far below the quality of the building and decor. It's such a shame the food totally ruined our experience as the venue is really quite beautiful. Although we ate upstairs (lower level was closed) the downstairs dining room looked sophisticated and almost out of place for Vernon (in a good way). As for the food: If you want to call yourself a steakhouse you better do steak well! This was NOT the case! I ordered the $38 New York expecting something on par with the price and venue. OH MY GOD! How terrible. It's what you'd expect from a Denny's or other family restaurant. Don't be fooled by the prices. The chef clearly does not know what he's doing. Presentation was about as good as I do at home. The Tomato Salad was so unimaginative and poorly presented. I couldn't be more disappointed. I felt duped, not to mention ripped off for the price they charged. In the end we rushed out as the other table had just been delivered a seafood dish that filled the restaurant with a very strong fishy smell! It was nauseating from across the room. I can only imagine what it was like for the poor soul that had to eat it. I really wanted to like this place. Please don't waste your time and money. read more

Great atmosphere. Great, friendly service. Attentive though there were only 2 people running the front of the house including the bar. No complaints about the food. Good portions. Steaks cooked as to order. Caesar salad came with bacon bits. It annoys me when a Caesar salad isn't a Caesar salad. At least tell me on the menu what I'm going to get (perhaps I overlooked it, but I don't think so.) It oddly worked though with the bacon bits. It was a very good Caesar salad. But I still think I'd ask for the bacon to be left off next time. I too much off s purist when it comes to Caesar salads. We talked about coming back two nights in a row. read more

We had a twongo certificate but if we had to pay full price, I would have given two stars. My steak sandwich was larger and better than my husband's filet. For sides, we had crab bisque (cool and tasted like thousand islands dressing with no crab), ceasar salad (warm, which may explain why I was sick as soon as we got home) and mashed potatoes (good). Decor is dated, very casual. Walking in, there is no station so everyone just hangs around next to people's tables trying to ge a waitresses attention. Stopped in here today for a business lunch, I had the grilled salmon sandwich and my colleague had the stirfry bowl. The sandwich was done beautifully with tsatsiki sauce drizzled over top of the salmon, with some nice crispy yam fries on the side as well as a tomato salad which is pretty much a deconstructed basic Greek salad. All the ingredients were fresh and delicious, really nice ambience in the space with wood floors and brick walls. We sat downstairs but apparently upstairs there is a more loungey sort of area as well as a patio, looks like a great place to go for drinks in the evening read more

We came here years ago for steak dinner and were not impressed at all, but we heard there were new owners, and a highly rated chef, so we thought we'd give it another chance. Ok these things happen, but to be offered a piece of cake as recompense was not good. All good item from lunch and dinner: French Onion Soup Mixed Starter Salad Caesar Starter Salad ( could have used a little more dressing but I could have and didn't ask for it) Beef Au Jus sandwich with cole slaw Crab cakes Lobster Tails Filet Minion Mussels Rem. this is Vernon and it's hot and dry in the summer. Phoenix ever has misters on the roof patio dining area, along with ceiling fans and patio heaters for chili times. The downstairs dining area is a little more formal with white tablecloths. Attire says Dressy but normal wear is fine. One note: Upstairs dining has no elevator. In fact, wait staff has to climb the back stairs for every trip to the kitchen. Fantastic restaurant! I've ordered a variety of items from the menu and have enjoyed each immensely. Friendly staff, beautiful decor, great location and an wonderful variety of flavourful dishes. I've loved the Grilled Vegetable Bruchetta, Bangkok Bowl, Salmon Newburg, Black & White Ahi Tuna, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, and the Mushroom Burger. I went for the first time with a couple of friends. As I approached the table, my friends were chatting easily with the waitress, and she prompty removed herself whenI arrived. Been here 10+ times. Had always been good on slow days. However, on our last visit, on a very busy Saturday, we waited an hour for our food. Not even a piece of bread for an hour. We had 3 kids with us. Not even a piece of bread! I ordered a $35 Filet Mignon (6 oz.), came out as a 3 oz. piece of meat. Finished it with 2 bites in less than 20 seconds. Spoke to the manager. She said : "This is how it is when we are busy". I will never visit this restaurant again. read more

My husband and I decided to go to the Phoenix to celebrate my birthday. We arrived at 6:30, were sat immediately in an intimate corner booth. Our waitress arrived directly, gave us the "special" info and recommendations. We ordered a bottle of wine and was opened and poured quickly as well. Without any hesitation our appetizer arrived before we had even tasted our wine, no time to enjoy it as a matter of fact. Water glasses already empty. Appetizer plate removed and before we topped up our wine glass the meal arrived, candle out on our table, no au jus on my plate, lobster tail was over cooked, sitting on my plate was the butter.. Still no water, cant heat up my lobster in the dish cause it wasn't over the candle that wasn't lit either, waiting for waitress to return to fill water, let us know the lil dish should be placed over the un lit candle and light the candle, bring my au jus. Eye contact now and waitress has continued working elsewhere, stopped eating now, disappointed that we haven't been approached. Meals are hard to swallow now because we're waiting for some attention and our appetites are diminishing.. Still no water. I'm done, no longer interested in staying, been here only 40 minutes and wanna run! Finally our waitress approaches, apologizes for her absenteeism and my disappointment explodes. Had it not been for the General Mgr, coming and apologizing for the awful service we wouldn't have come back NOR recommended this to anyone. We weren't there an hour and it seemed rushed from the minute we arrived. Will give it a second chance only because with the measures taken perhaps things will improve and the guests will be allowed to rest, enjoy their meals at a comfortable pace and get better attn. Went to The Phoenix tonight for a romantic birthday dinner. We've been there many times as a group and have never been disappointed. We both ordered steak. Although they were both cooked to order there was no "wow"...we could have had the same steak at any pub for half the price. That however was not really the issue, the appies and sides were perfect. We went for a romantic dinner and the restaurant was not busy at all as we went late. There were a lot of empty tables. The setting was perfect for what we wanted. The problem was our server...she was very attentive. Like, way too attentive. To the point of interrupting. We could not have a conversation without her input as every time she came near our table she would stop by to chat, even to the point of telling us about a personal experience with having to put her dog down. Having recently lost our dog, this was not a positive conversation. At the end of the meal, when she dropped off the bill she made sure to make eye contact, even though we were in the middle of a conversation.Sometimes in the service industry, less is more...especially when it comes to fine dining. In the future we will be looking for somewhere else to go when we want a romantic dinner, where the focus will be on just the 2 of us enjoying a meal together. read more
