Cool gym, good classes, great coaches. But extreme lack of transparency of policies/ membership/ pass when signing up. And parking also sucks! They seem all rainbows and butterflies but make sure to read everything before you make the decision of purchasing a pass with them. It's conflicting because I generally really enjoy the classes at this gym, they're just challenging enough and I learn new things weekly. I joined TPE before covid in 2019, then had to stop (along with the world) and re-joined at the beginning of 2025. Upon my first day back in class I recognized at least four people in attendance - which really shows the amazing retention of TPE. I have tried many other types of gyms - Barre, Orange Theory, Crossfit, Family Style (Like YMCA) but there is, in my experience, nothing close to what The Phoenix Effect offers in terms of community and fitness. I have completed well over 125+ classes and I can confidently say not a single class has ever been the same. You read that right - each class has an entirely unique workout which means It's always exciting and my body does not plateau. The trainers are inspiring - they are funny, they ACTUALLY care, they give productive feedback and I never feel judged if I am unable to perform a task as intended. They are always able to give me modifications that are specific to how my body can move. TPE also offers workshops and seminars that go beyond the physical workout to focus on mindset and whole body, which is very special and something I have not seen in other facilities. Each month there are fun games and challenges and meet ups (all optional) that add extra spice and fun to the workouts. The community of TPE is just as encouraging. When someone rings the Personal Record bell, the gym goers all cheer from wherever they are in a station. I know it can be very intimidating trying out a new gym, meeting new people, especially working out around new people can feel vulnerable. The trainers, the front desk staff, the gym goers are all very welcoming, so if you are curious, I would recommend reaching out to give it a try. I think you'll find a very safe space filled with healthy positive community members that all want each other to succeed in whatever personal fitness journey they are on. One extra note - if the parking is the most difficult part due to the location- you can always find spots on the residential side streets for free a block away - don't let the meters deter you! read more

Really bizarre experience here. Arrived for a class to try out their advertised "rest of December for $1" promotion. Because they were only holding morning classes during street cleaning time right in front of the studio, it took me an extra second to find parking and I arrived at 801 for the 8:00 a.m. class. Now double ops and many other HIIT studios. Will let you come in and catch up with the rotation, honestly, they teach you a few exercises in the beginning but it's not rocket science, you can simply watch what other people are doing for the couple of exercises you missed and participate. The person that desk claimed that the promotion was not being honored, and that he had to ask the instructor whether it was okay.. then he stalled until the demonstration was over. He went inside to ask the instructor and the instructor seemed very gruff and not smiling and agitated. Not like at double ops or training me where they are always in a good mood. He was saying oh I can't. I can't as though he was a harassed film director or something. He didn't even acknowledge my presence or existence. The desk person didn't even bother to get my information or offer another first timer class rate. Weirdly was asking if I was a member of the gym (after) I said it was my first time. What? TPE is amazing. I was a fitness newbie when I started here 4 months ago - really out of curiosity more than anything else. In a short period, it's become a hobby and transformed my life and lifestyle. No kidding! The classes are intense but super fun. The coaches super enthusiastic and know their stuff. More than anything else I love the vibe, sense of community, and the fact that the workouts are always changing, never the same. LIFT and INFERNO are my favorites. Listen, LA is littered with fitness options. Phoenix Effect is legit though. The best way to describe Phoenix Effect's programming is strength training (like all the best parts of Crossfit, bodybuilding, those instagram fitness model videos you follow in secret) with actual safe quality coaching, consistent programming, and without any of the bs stuff that the internet fitness world has made up. The core of their programming are their LIFT classes which are pretty much focused on strength training. They do more cardio focused classes too, but tbh I don't go to them because I don't care for cardio so I'm not qualified to review those. People new-ish to strength training or fitness: Phoenix Effect is a wonderful place to learn all of the exercises that you only vaguely know about. How to squat correctly. What exercises target what muscles and how to activate and actually use those muscles. How to not injure yourself. How to confidently use a barbell/dumbbell. The beauty of the classes are that you are split into 4 groups essentially, so everyone is doing their own thing at their own pace. That means, you can hide in the corner while you figure stuff out and have the coach come to you, if thats what makes you happy. Or you can socialize and get support from your group. Choose your own adventure. Strength training is glorious once you figure the basics out. Your posture will be awesome! Your butt will be the best butt it can be! Your bones will be so so dense even as you age! If all you care about is aesthetics, it is waaaay easier to get to your ideal body by just monitoring what you eat and throwing a couple of strength training classes in then it is to cardio yourself to death. You will see the best results by consistently doing the programming here instead of hopping around from gym to gym, and you won't stagnate because the programming changes frequently enough. People who have done strength training and think they know things: Phoenix Effect is great because they have solid programming built around foundational movements (deadlift, squat, bench, push/pull movements) but they run a 6 week cycle so the accessory movements, rep scheme, and focus change just enough for you to see your numbers go up but also give you variety. Activation exercises are a part of each class! Yea, no one really loves them, but holy toledo do they improve your big lifts when you actually do them consistently. They also constantly add in new equipment and exercises: sled pushes, yoke, chains, slide pads, sandbags, steel maces, rowers, assault bike, boxes, etc. I transitioned from 5+ years of crossfit to Phoenix, and I am so relieved to not feel any aches and pains from accidentally lifting something too quickly and incorrectly. I feel better and stronger after every workout here instead of feeling like I might have accidentally torn something. My lifts have all gone up! So if you want to actually follow a progressive program where you can reliably track your progress instead of doing a random grab bag of workouts, definitely give this place a try. read more

I tried this gym out for 2 weeks and I waited till the end to review. I couldn't figure out the difference between the classes before I went the first time so if you're curious: there are 3 different styles of class but they all revolve around doing 5-10 stations in a circuit. Burn means you do each station for on average a minute and then go around the circuit a few times. Fire is pretty similar to Burn except there is a "fire drill" every once in a while where you run outside around the building - this is just NOT my jam so I learned to avoid Fire classes and everything was fine. Lift ended up being my favorite style of class even though I avoided it because I thought I wasn't strong enough. You just do each station one time so depending on how many stations the time is divided up over the length of the class. This class is absolutely scalable to your level. All of the instructors I had over the 2 weeks were amazing and full of energy. They walked around correcting form and giving me modifications when I couldn't do a chin up like some of the pros in the class. All of the stars are for the instructors I had. I am not a beginner at working out but I can say my first class I was frustrated because of how l compared to other people in the class. I was able to change my attitude and to use it as inspiration to improve but I could definitely see how it could be off-putting to go into your first class back to working out and be asked to do a pull up... if anything I would recommend adding a beginners class because if I was a beginner I honestly wouldn't feel comfortable at this studio. HOWEVER, I do believe it's a testament to how effective their classes are. If you keep coming regularly you won't be a beginner for long. It's all about your attitude. I always think it's weird when during your first class they don't ask you sign a waiver or explain to you the class layout or where the bathroom is, etc. Not a huge deal but it makes me feel more comfortable especially since I'm not used to this style of class. If you are parking in the area on the street try to park fairly close because there are some characters that frequent melrose ave. All in all definitely check this place out if you want a good sweaty workout. Don't worry they provide towels and there's a water fountain in the back ;) read more

Oof. Prepare yourself for attitude, egos and parking hell. Not sure if this place used to be different at its old location but it sure is not what I was expecting. Signing up with class pass, I've been trying out a few different gyms with circuit training/boot camp style workouts lately. It's been a great tool to help determine which one to commit to in the long run. Needless to say I was ecstatic to try the Phoenix Effect as several of my clients at work had recommended it with high regards. Wow was I disappointed. Bringing my boyfriend and a friend in town to the class, I was embarrassed by the behavior exhibited by the staff. After looking 20 minutes for parking (yes that is correct and not an exaggeration- there's overly competitive metered parking and all streets adjacent are permit only after 6 or 8pm which doesn't work for a 7:30pm class), I finally dropped my friend and bf off so they'd be on time and I could continue looking. Continuing to fail at finding anything, I valeted my car next door for $8 and walked over frustrated to the class hoping all the stress of parking was worthwhile. Astounded, I found my bf and friend at the front desk- being told that bc they were late (it was 7:33) and they could not join the class. Worst, the front desk person didn't seem remotely apologetic, offer any suggestions or help -- and instead unsympathetically pointed to the 4 unmarked tandem spots behind the building (mind you there were at least 15 people inside the class AND when Id called the woman who answered the phone couldn't even describe where these spots were located and did tell me there was no sign.. Is this a joke?!). If you want to charge an outrageous amount of $ for a workout class, at least have superior customer service and a kick ass workout to offer! I didn't even receive an offer for a free reschedule due to the mishap or any offer to make us feel understood. Instead I received a look that said 'tough luck.' If you're located in Melrose and don't have parking, I think it should be expected that new clients might be a tad bit late after dealing with the hell that is parking on Melrose in rush hour. We're only trying to workout- but it sure as hell won't ever be at the Phoenix Effect again! read more

Alright, I'll admit that when I perused the website I had a bit of the mental side-eye going on. Some of the site looks a bit too slick in a late 90's designer imposters body spray kind of way. Remember those? If you like Giorgio Beverly Hills™, you'll love Marco of Toluca Lake! But, I decided to give The Phoenix Effect (herein referred to as TPE) a shot and I'm glad I did! I think the bulk of the impression of a fitness studio is not necessarily attributable to the content of the workouts or even the state of the facility, but, rather, to the quality of the instructors. For me, there are three standout teachers at TPE: Beth Bishop, Kristin Vallacher and Aaron Guy. First, Beth Bishop is analogous to apple pie: warm, inviting and comfortable. Of course, that apple pie is likely paleo-friendly and served with a glass of muscle milk or some other fancy-schmancy supplement. And there will be a workout routine written on the napkin next to it. She welcomed me immediately and really seems genuinely excited to see her clients. Kristin Vallacher can best be described as an enigma wrapped in a conundrum giving birth to an oxymoron. She's structured, but a goof; she's amazingly cool, but she likes Phil Collins; she's always going on and on about her honors thesis she wrote at that Ivy League institution in New Hampshire, but she doesn't know the difference between your and you're. In all seriousness, Kristin's knowledge and passion about fitness is complemented by her wonderful sense of humor. She knows that achieving a high level of fitness is hard work, but that doesn't mean you have to be miserable on the journey. The fact that I can feel comfortable enough joking around in this review is proof of how friendly and fun she is - I hope... I'm convinced Aaron Guy was created in a lab by splicing the DNA of Lou Ferrigno circa the Incredible Hulk years with a dreamcatcher. His physique may be intimidating, but that doesn't mean his attitude is. Good trainers are informed and passionate about their work; great trainers have the ability to empathize, too. I think the best gift Aaron brings to the table is his vulnerability. He strikes me as someone who's been a bit of an underdog, and, therefore, has a visceral understanding of how easily we can tell ourselves to give up on something - especially when we feel like the world is telling us to give up on it, too. He gets it. Aaron is just as excited to see one client who has struggled with obesity his entire life do his first push-up as he is to cheer on another client claiming her latest title in a physique competition. I encourage everyone to give TPE a try. Admittedly, it wasn't until I took the classes from these three instructors that I was sold on the place. So, if one teacher is just a'ight to you, try a class with a different one. Parking has never been an issue for me as there is plenty of it within a seven-minute walk. You can usually find ample spaces south of Clinton, north of Rosewood and east of Vista. Hope to see you there! read more

By the looks of the website, this place is incredibly intimidating to a person like me. I've recently upped my work-out game (thanks ClassPass!) and have been to a bunch of different studios in Los Angeles. I would consider myself somewhat experienced in the art of circuit training, but this place looked TOUGH. I had a friend convince me to join her for Phoenix Burn this morning at 6am with Carlos. I was definitely nervous going in. The facility is clean and welcoming. Open air to the street and really quite lovely that early in the morning. When Carlos went through the circuits, though, I kind of wanted to run out of the building crying. There was a ton of stuff going on that I did NOT feel comfortable doing (bear crawls, tic tocs, assisted pull-ups, AHCK!), but my friend encouraged me to do my best. Well. I did the damn thing, and with Carlos' help modifying a few things, I felt like a champion afterwards. This boot camp was an eye opening experience on mind over matter. I would recommend Phoenix Burn to anyone even slightly interested in coming. There are always ways to match the exercises to fit your experience and ability. As long as you remember to be there for yourself and don't compare yourself to others, you're gold! Not to mention I burned almost 600 calories in just under an hour. That's huge. There is a reason why I no longer belong to a gym. As an ex-member of Equinox, I thought I had found the ultimate place to keep my mind and body challenged and satisfied. After six years however, the growth the company experienced had an adverse negative effect on the gym and its members. Instead of having the honor of a an existing client and enjoying some benefits, I was slowly edged to the corners in terms of membership and also quickly saw the influx of self-absorbed, mirror obsessed, cell-phone yakking, grunting, inconsiderate members flow in. I quit that bitch as soon as I could. About a year later I reconnected with an ex-Equinox instructor and founder of the Max Phoenix Effect himself on Facebook. In the time he had been gone he had created a community of bootcampers looking to work hard and improve their fitness. The photos he posted were incredible befores and afters as well as shots of them in action at bootcamp itself. One look and I knew 1) he had created something very special, almost as if he had hand-curated his team and 2) I HAD to be a part of it. I was wrong about just one thing- his bootcamp is open to anyone, you don't have to be anywhere near perfect, you just have to want to work and enjoy the challenge. My first bootcamp was an ass-kicker. I couldn't walk for days and I think for the first 4 classes I was going about once every 5 days due to the need for recovery. But I stuck with it and slowly but surely began seeing some serious results. Max not only provided advice on nutrition but the workout is based on some sort of science that trains your body to burn the fat, fast. As I'm writing this, I've dropped 14 pounds and at least 5% bodyfat. I have never come anywhere near these figures at Equinox, and I used to be a serious gym rat, sometimes spinning twice a day or doing back-to-back classes. As long as you stay consistent at the Max Phoenix Effect, you are guaranteed to 1) enjoy every last painful minute of it and 2) see results. This part is sad for me to write, but my friend Max is now looking down from the heavens. But MPE is now primarily led by Ryan Haake, who is the motivational, inspirational, caring equivalent to ass-kicker Max Phoenix. I now look to Ryan to guide my continuing journey on becoming the person I have always really wanted to be, but never realized I could. Yes, I've always been "fit" more or less, but this physical change and the support you get from not only the trainers but also your fellow bootcampers has really changed my confidence, my outlook, everything. I know you're thinking "it's just bootcamp". It's not. The members are also what keeps me returning again and again and again. It wouldn't be the same without them. I work in the fitness industry and boutique fitness is crowded. It's true. There's a studio that offers something for every type of workout and it's hard to stay loyal and it's a truth I've come to accept as a member of the industry, but also something I'm guilty of. This studio officially has a special place in my heart. This 5-star review is for the workout and the trainer. I'm not going to nickle-and-dime this place taking off .5 stars here and there for the sh*tty parking situation or the fact that there aren't any showers because the workout is that great. It's easy to go to a studio and pick it apart saying it's small, or they don't have a lot of amenities, but when you go to TPE and you go to WORK, you're going to get your butt handed to you. I've trained with both Joel and Seth. Both of them top notch instructors/coaches. Fun playlists, very form and technique oriented. These guys will get you to maximize your workout with great form and they'll keep you motivated through that grueling second half. I love the use of plyos and body weight exercises to get the heart rate up and the well-rounded routines to hit every muscle group. This week is "glamour week" and we hit those beauty muscles- my biceps are definitely on fire. I'm excited to see what other fun themes they have for upcoming weeks and I would recommend this workout to anyone WHO LOVES LIFT. read more

Hardcore workout and I loved it! I did Phoenix Lift today with Aaron Guy and the class kicked my butt but it was great. So this is weightlifting circuit training with a focus on form. You break into groups, my group was awesome, although the whole class had the most supportive, hardworking and positive vibes. We did weighted squats, lunges, sit-ups, kettle bells and more. I love that the focus is on form and pushing through, not fast reps. Aaron was tough but supportive, no BS. The front desk guy was super welcoming and informative. The studio was clean and well-organized. Phoenix Lift- Where the ladies at? This class was great for both men and women IMO both in workout and vibes...at least for women who are looking for the benefits and lift ;) weightlifting provides. read more

I have been coming to Phoenix Effect since it was housed (no pun intended) at Mansion Fitness about a year ago and I need to say that Phoenix, in combination with my own regimen, has totally changed my body. All of the trainers are top-tier, the other clients are fun to work with, and the whole environment is really inspiring. Honestly, going to an evening class here is comparable to going out dancing-- but instead of dancing, $14 vodka soda in hand, at some cheesy gay bar in weho, you're getting the best work out of your life with a group of distinctly less judgmental folks. Class prices feel sort of expensive, but, considering the intensity of the program and the experience of a lot of the trainers, you really need to compare what one class costs ($24 out of pocket) to what a personal training session with one of the instructors would cost ($$$). As for other bootcamp-style classes in LA, I'm sure you can find a similar program, but I feel like Phoenix's studio is a much more agreeable place to work out than the humid dark cave that is Barry's Bootcamp West Hollywood or some of the other studios. One common complaint I see on here is the issue of parking-- which IS totally an issue, but I know that the management just added a reasonably priced valet option for night classes if you're incapable of parking your own car on a street and walking, like, a block from your Range Rover to your High Intensity Interval Training Class. There are also a few spots out back, too, but I feel like that's sort of a high-pressure tandem parking situation that I don't have the good-spirits to deal with after class (people sit in their cars waiting for you to leave). Anyway, classes are fun and challenging and the trainers rule. Special attention should be directed to Seth's Thursday class-- his playlists and sock-choices are divine. Oh-- one thing-- show up IN YOUR GYM CLOTHES. Nobody wants to deal with you hogging the bathroom. (Alternately, maybe create a little changing area in the back? I started working out here through Class Pass, but have recently signed up for their unlimited package...mostly because I get the best workouts and I love the community here. The trainers are top notch, fun, and friendly and the workouts are kick ass. Also, I love the people I've gotten to know there. We're just one big happy family. Something you'd expect from a place that challenges you as hard as these guys do. Some notable pluses are comprehensive speed, agility, mobility, and strength training. Also, they offer Obstacle Course Racing training every Saturday morning. Let me start by saying I walked in and was like "Umm.. am I in the right place?" So many men. I was a little bit intimidated by that, but considering Thanksgiving is next week and I will be fully engrossed in Turkey, I decided to stick with the workout. Joel was really helpful all throughout class and showed me how to do each of the exercises properly. Oh, and he played Spice Girls. Anyone who plays the Spice Girls during a workout is a fan of mine. UPDATE: I L-O-V-E Phoenix Effect.... I attended my first class only 6 months ago and since then I have lost over 30 pounds and so many inches I cannot even count. I am 3 jean sizes down people..... THREE! I am SO F***ing thankful that I stumbled upon their Groupon way back when and took a chance. Phoenix trainers have changed my life and brought back to life my inner athlete. As for the trainers- They are all fantastic! Beth (owner) is not only an amazing trainer herself but manager that only hires THE BEST (like the BEST of the BEST). All of the trainers truly care and are so passionate about what they do that you cannot help but be so excited to be there! She and Kristin are constantly changing up our work outs to keep the weight falling off and making you the strongest athlete you can be! You cannot go wrong with any of their classes and any of their trainers.... THEY WILL TRANSFORM YOU! Lastly, just to put the icing on the cake (or should I say the protein powder in non fat almond milk shake) the people that come to phoenix effect are amazing and have become great friends. There is such a camaraderie in the gym, in online support/nutrition groups, and they plan social events that are so fun! 1st class is only $5 and I PROMISE that you will be hooked! **CLASSPASS REVIEW** More of a 3.5 but again, who is counting! I've been on a total circuit training/hiit kick (I just love it! I never get bored!) and added Phoenix Effect to my rotation of classes. I am kind of amazed at how well they use the space that they have. I thought it would be way too crowded but it really isn't plus I get my butt kicked. Beth is fantastic. Seriously. Again, I would be totally okay if the instructor was reserved (I mean I gotta admit I'm kind of a stand-offish/shy person) but she is super warm/inviting and motivates me to work harder. It seems like the class names are based on the intensity/level. It goes from Burn, Fire, Inferno. There are other classes like Lift and Fix. I would like to try Lift and see what happens. I went to a Fire class and I'll definitely be back. Parking is actually okay if you don't mind parking in the neighborhood (read the signs of course) and walking over. read more

Besides all the instructors being insanely beautiful, knowledgeable, motivating, hilarious, and just all around brilliant... this place is really one of the better establishments I have been to for a REALLY intense workout. I have been all over LA and have tried out many MANY types of workouts and have been a member at a really top notch gym for years. What really sets this place apart (aside from the previously stated team members/family), are the levels and variety they put into each workout. I have not yet taken a personal training session, but I have taken numerous boot camp classes. Each one was different from the last, and each one just as insane and life changing. Upon getting walked through what your next hour of workout stations, you are given the opportunity to become friends with one of the other fitness hungry and friendly people that attend these classes. Or you can definitely workout with a friend or someone you know. I have gone with coworkers, friends, and alone; each time has been super fun, challenging, enlightening, and self gratifying. You really take a look back at what you just accomplished, not really knowing how you did it, but the support of the rest of the people there and the trainer really helps you understand another level of teamwork. One of my favorite people/trainers/humans is Beth Bishop. I look forward to her sassy energy, motivating words of encouragement and her knowledge on what we are doing to ourselves and WHY. AND she will not let you get away with cheating or doing anything that could potentially hurt yourself. She is always on the move, ready and willing to guide you, and also has a sick ass playlist. I recommend getting over there ASAP and see why this place has such dedicated members and friends alike. You will not be let down!!! read more

I went to a trainer for two years and saw no results, I have been attending the Bootcamp since January of 2013 the trainers and owners really take their time with each one in the class to make sure we are working out properly. I enjoy coming five days a week and changing my life. read more
