I have been coming the the Phoenix for the past 10 years. I felt my review was due for an update. When I first walked in on last visit, I noticed a strong sewage like smell. Their bathrooms are located in the basement and the smell was even stronger there. The restaurant must have high turnover as our bartender and server both said this was their first week. Drinks are still tasty and very reasonably priced. However, menus could use an update as still look the same from 10 years ago. The piano player reminds me of Will Ferrell impersonating Robert Goulet on SNL. He seems to be a fixture here too. I will say kitchen is open so you can see the staff. They were communicating well to get food out in a timely manner. Still a decent spot, but it could use some upgrades. read more

We ordered two GINger beers, duck bacon wontons and an order of the stuffed mushrooms. GINger beers - one of them were made with Crown - peach flavor and the other was standard. I have eaten dinner here 3 times. The first time my chicken was dry and overcooked. Last week I got pasta with shrimp and it was good. My husband and our friend got a salad with grilled chicken, walnuts and dried fruit. The salad dressing on both was EXTREMELY salty. I think everyone else was happy. This is a regular spot of mine. I usually sit at the bar with my spouse or friends because the interaction with the staff is stellar. Anthony and Amelia are two of the best bartenders here. You can tell them what you have a taste for or ask for recommendation and they do a great job at matching your likes to what they have. The food is great, I usually get the apps, so the duck bacon wontons and chicken tenders are two of my favorites. The cheesecakes are divine and different. The chef knows what she is doing. You have to try the peanut butter cheesecake. Its very good. The manager is also a delight, she is runs the place smoothly and great to talk to. Charging $3 for bread service, it's seems a bit penny-pinching for lack of a better term. In over 40 years of eating across the country and even at fine dinning I only ever came across this one other time and that's been out of many, many restaurants. That was at a restaurant in Michigan in a smaller town. That was 20 years ago and they charged $1 for a bread basket. But it is what it is. Another one I don't get is the garlic mashed potatoes. They don't offer baked potatoes. That's a deal breaker for us. That's about 25% or more that makes up a steak diner, to us anyway. I mean it really is. The Filet Mignon? Says "not responsible for well done steaks". And no Lobster Tails. read more

Decent pasta, good drinks. I had some kind of coconut crusted fish and the breading was burnt and bitter. Everyone really liked the salmon pasta and Cajun pasta, very large portions. The Phoenix branded Cosmopolitan was to die for (had that as a dessert beverage). It's worth it. Raspberry cheesecake made right on site.....you can't go wrong. All the steaks were fantastic. Cons: The service....perhaps a result of Covid staffing shortages, I don't know but 15+mins for a standard Capn n Diet....and it wasn't overly packed. A friend got the so called Buffalo chicken salad....''twas not Buffalo but dyed red chicken chunks with no "Buffalo" spice at all. The smell of the joint was rancid.....it smelled like the Davenport Water Treatment facility on south concord in august. Maybe they had a back up or something but let people know. My husband and I were hoping for a nice date night out in Davenport. We were only visiting for one night out of a week long road trip vacation. We walked in and were immediately seated. I will say that the ambiance was so so considering where we sat. I was facing the small kitchen area with silverware and other supplies. For the price of the restaurant it didn't seem to fit. We overlooked that and proceeded to order. We got the mushrooms with dill, cheese, and butter. The presentation was lacking. They did come out rather fast, but were bland and the cheese could be picked up in one single bite. I wouldn't order again. We then ordered the pistachio encrusted salmon and the pork ribeye. We don't eat sugar, so they were very accommodating and let us sub out a couple of things. We asked for no carrots in the veggie medley. The very nice waitress said that she could ask the chef to make a different sauce to accommodate no sugar. My husband was exited. After waiting about 20-30 minutes the main entrees arrived. My salmon was way over cooked and the sides were cold. My husband took a bite of the pork ribeye and it was covered in the exact sauce we were told he would not get. His sides were also cold. And both of got carrots. (Not a deal breaker as we could easily eat around them.) They took both dishes back. I also saw the manager taste the sauce on his plate with her finger. They brought the pork rib-eye back with carrots again and the EXACT SAME piece of pork he had before. You could see where he cut into it. We asked the waitress about it and she took it back AGAIN. The manager came over and told us that the chef "rinsed off" the meat and put it back on the grill. I was SHOCKED! I appreciate the honesty, but WOW! At that point, my husband was done and didn't want anything. I will say the new salmon was tasty. It was not good enough to crave and go back to though. The waitress and manager were nice and apologized multiple times. They didn't charge us for anything. Apparently, this was a very busy night for them, the kitchen was behind, and they were very sorry. We are from out of town and won't come back here. We left with my husband not eating. He insisted I eat. Like I said, it was good, not great though. We mentioned this to the staff at our hotel and they said our experience was the first they had heard of this. I hope that's true, but based on other reviews I'm not sure it is a rare situation. On another note...my husband went to the bathroom when we were leaving and told me there was a roach on the urinal. So, if you're like me and want to give a place a chance even if there are some negative reviews you may want to find a different place. We substituted pasta for mashed potatoes. We expected an Italian style Marsala. It was not. The sauce tasted like it was seasoned with Kitchen Bouquet, and the Chicken was tough. We did not eat it. One of my favorite local restaurants/bar in the quad cities. Phoenix is known for their Chicago style architecture. The space is very welcoming and has lot of specials. I usually visit on Mondays as my favorite bartender Anthony is behind the bar. The drinks they have are amazing and on Monday's it's all day happy hour so there's a lot of specials. They do a daily happy hour and an evening happy hour too. One of my favorite items on the menu is the duck bacon wontons. I highly recommend them and the phoneix garlic salad. I highly recommend them but keep in mind the kitchen will close before the bar so it's not a late night food and drink spot. read more

Need to toast bread and serve with Parmesan too. Or something. Ordered 3 ribeyes. All 3 were way overcooked !! They all said tasted good tho. But not even pink!!! Tuna ordered rare. And over cooked as well. Chicken carbonara- good. But hardly tasted the bacon Salads - AWSOME!! We had garlic - cranberry & house. I would go back for the spinach cranberry in a minute. This is a hidden gem! We arrived in Davenport on a Monday and The Phoenix was one of the only restaurants open. We took advantage of the Monday special which included 2 drinks, an appetizer, 2 salads and two entrees for $65. It was a very enjoyable evening. Our server Heather was friendly and made good suggestions. We started with drinks from the extensive martini menu. For our appetizer we selected the stuffed jalapeños which were home made and delicious. Next course I opted for the white chili instead of a salad and Hubble had a garlic salad. Both excellent. We were then served hot bread with two types of butter. For entrees we had the park which was tender and tasty. I ordered the pistachio crusted salmon but the waitress made a mistake and brought lemon basil salmon. I was just thankful to be having a nice meal and a good server do I went with it and it was very good. The portions were generous. This was a top tier experience for me and my party of five. We went for a friends birthday at 6 on a Saturday and it wasn't too crowded. The live piano made the atmosphere like something from a movie. The food was the star of the show. I ordered the sesame ahi tuna and loved it. The large portion of tuna melted in my mouth and overall the dinner, while filling, wasn't heavy or too rich. My friends also had similar experiences with their meals, each with no complaints. The restaurant was even extremely accommodating to my friend's peanut allergy. The cheesecake for desert was also wonderful with a continued theme of being extremely well made and delicious. The quality and large portions absolutely justify a slightly higher price. However, it is honestly the same amount it would cost to door dash some fast food. Extremely impressive for such quality. I am absolutely planning on coming again within the year whenever I'm looking for something on the higher end. read more

This was my least favorite restaurant that we ate at while visiting Davenport. When we walked in, it immediately smelled like there was a sewer problem. Our waitress explained that the city is doing work on the pipes so it's not the restaurant's fault. Still, kinda hard to enjoy your dinner while smelling that all the time. The drinks were extremely sweet and honestly not good. Our food was just mediocre too... What a shame. I had high expectations but unfortunately was disappointed. Loved this place! Ambiance is perfectly suited for downtown davenport with exposed brick and high ceilings. My date had a martini and I had a Cosmo- both perfect. We ordered 3 appetizers instead of full meals: fries, bruschetta, and artichoke dip with pita. All were excellent, and I was pleasantly surprised at the spiciness of the dip. A small loaf of fresh bread came before our order, served with three types of butter-- a nice touch. CONSUMER BEWARE: eating here is akin to gambling--and a LOT of money is at stake. Our most recent experience consisted of poor service, long wait times, and a lot of bad food. I have provided more details below. My sister and her boyfriend have eaten here multiple times with great results. She enjoyed her past experiences so much that she requested our family celebrate her birthday here. So, we did. We made a reservation for our party of 6 a few days in advance, and were seated quickly upon arrival with no problems. Surprising for a Friday night, the restaurant was not busy. The place appeared sufficiently staffed. We began by ordering two appetizers: duck wontons and jalapeño poppers ($12 apiece). We received a measly 5 wontons and 4 poppers. The wontons were decent, but the poppers were utterly tasteless and dry. Zero flavor. The sauces were yummy, though. It took a bit longer than we expected for our waitress to take our main order. In fact, we rarely saw our waitress at all. The times she did check on us, her attitude was largely disinterested. I noticed she spent quite a lot of time standing--not serving, just standing--behind the bar. She did, however, go out of her way to inform us that several new kitchen staff had been recently hired and were still undergoing training. Granted, we did order 6 entrees, but waiting 45 minutes to receive our food seemed a bit much. Perhaps that is indeed an acceptable amount of time to wait, but it was unusual compared to our other dining experiences. When we did receive our food, 3 entrees were tasty (2 pasta dishes, 1 order of the horseradish salmon). The other 3, however, were simply not good--borderline gross. Both orders of the chicken cordon bleu were extremely dry/overcooked, tasted strangely of unreduced alcohol, and had a strong Dijon flavor (as opposed to the honey mustard taste we were expecting). So too was the chicken trio equally dry/overcooked. Flavor wise, it was quite bland. We received a bill of just under $250. A 20% gratuity had already been added. This is not unusual practice with parties of 6 or more, but it was never once mentioned to us (not while making the reservation, not posted on the door, not noted on the menu, etc.). We happily tip 20% of our own accord--that is, if the service we received was adequate. If it was less than adequate, we tend to tip 15%. The service we received definitely fell into the "less than adequate" category. I cannot help but wonder if our waitress did a subpar job because she realized she was guaranteed a hefty tip no matter what. Overall, we were extremely disappointed by our dining experience. If you choose to try The Phoenix for yourself, be aware that there is about a 50% likelihood that your $25 plate will be difficult to get down due to its being overlooked, tasteless, or a combination of both. read more
