I've known about this coffee house for a few years but since I don't drink coffee I never thought twice about it. Then I went in a few days ago and found out they serve more than just coffee. The food that I had was made in house, the bread they use for sandwiches are all in house made so when you walk in the smell make's your mouth water, which makes for a delicious choice of snacks to go along with your coffe , tea or any beverage you enjoy. Atmosphere of the place is very cozy and staff very friendly and helpful, I've now been back 2 days in a row and have tried a couple different snacks and beverages and have not been disappointed. I spent a week in Lethbridge initially thinking that there were very few vegan friendly restaurants but discovering instead that it's just not a Yelp community. The businesses frequently don't promote their features well and the reviews are very limited. Penny Coffee House is ahead of the game on both points. I enjoyed an excellent house made savory chai (they offer multiple alternatives to dairy milk) and picked up a few of the three vegan pastries they had that day for myself and family. I'm sure that the berry turnovers, cinnamon twists, and rosemary pretzels would have been ever better had I warmed them up before serving. read more

I have been to this cafe twice. Very rustic looking from inside. Love the world map on the ceiling. The staff is very friendly and the food is great. I had a sandwich the first time - turkey, carrots and cranberries is all I remember. Really good. If you are feeling hip today, this the place to be. After my friend and I had spent over 50$ on breakfast and drinks while we studied at one of our usual study spots, we were ordered by the barista to move to either the bar (where you stand + wait for your stuff) or a smaller table (clearly not big enough for two laptops). I ended up putting my drink in a to-go cup and we packed up for a more welcoming space. I understand needing turn over, or politely asking us if we would mind moving, but to tell a paying customer we had to move when there wasn't even a party of 2+ waiting or needing a table was uncalled for. read more

This is a solid 5-star in my mind. The people working were super nice and helpful. The food is both unique and delicious (love the falafel wrap with tzatziki... and the gluten free brownies). And, the coffee is fantastic -- not too sweet and not bitter. They know their craft. I sat here for a while and worked. The atmosphere is buzzing with activity but not too loud. A lot of people were in the shop to enjoy food, conversations, and simply hang out for the afternoon. It seems like a popular university haunt. The location was easy to get too. I had no issues finding parking (on a weekend) or a spot to sit (at 3pm). Overall, another pleasant surprise in Lethbridge. read more

I had the falafel wrap with beets on the side and a double ginger snap cookie sandwich with cream cheese butter cream inside - so yummy!!! The Penny Coffee House is a hidden gem in downtown Lethbridge. Okay... it's hidden for those of us who live elsewhere! The locals seemed well aware of it. It kept coming up in every search I did for sandwich shops in Lethbridge so I just HAD to try it. On first glance, Penny Coffee seems like a typical soup and sandwich joint. However, I was super impressed by the number of vegetarian options they had on their menu as well as their commitment to locally sourcing their food. I went for a vegan version of the falafel wrap. Since I was going sans tzatziki, they offered me a number of other dairy-free options. The wrap was excellent! Also with falafel, the wrap was stuffed with creamy hummus and fresh veggies. Definitely filled my craving for a fresh lunch. I wasn't super impressed by the coffee but the desserts are another story. After the wrap, I treated myself to a vegan danish and it was totally drool-worthy; nice and flaky, and topped with custard and mandarin oranges. Yummy!! read more

I've been a fan of the Penney since it opened but was disappointed today. Coconut, sweet potato and chickpea soup was bland and flavorless. They are known for their baking but the bread pudding dry and under flavored. Even an addition of cream did not help. Expensive sandwiches, terrible London Fog, and when I asked for the recipe for a pasta salad's sauce I was rebuffed with "It's a secret" which is understandable... though I quickly found out with a simple internet search. Mayonnaise, sour cream (in some), lemon juice, mustard, dill and black pepper. Not really a trade secret I suppose. Oh, and apparently they can't make a Bombay Fog because "We make our OWN chai here", As if that prevented you from combining it with cream and honey, though the particular employee I was speaking with didn't seem all that interested in satisfactory customer service. Or moving. The Italian Sodas were made with the same care and diligence I would expect of a minimum wage earner in a 7-11. Syrup should be stirred, which takes all of 5 seconds. 0/10, will not be patronizing this establishment again. read more

Some things are golden constants, when everything else is constantly changing. The penny coffee house is a constant and I adore it for it. Every time I come home to lethbridge I stop in at this place and it reminds me of everything I loved about this city to begin with. The coffee is all French pressed coffee, and i know from experience that it is (or at least should be) checked and changed out every hour or so. The beans are from Cuppers, which is owned by Al - and Al was the original owner and operator of the Penny. In fact beans used to be roasted In those very walls. The coffee, when done properly is positively delicious. Get there early for the freshest first cup ever. The espresso machine is a la Marzocco (FB 80 I believe?); you know a beautiful handmade in Florence espresso machine. The espresso is not served unless it falls within the appropriate pull time for a shot, so you're guaranteed to get a delicious rich crema with your cuppa. The vibe is a bit indie, a bit contemporary, a lot community oriented. Come in a couple times and you'll be guaranteed to get sucked in as a long-term regular. And then the staff will know you by name, and know your order and you will feel like you're legitimately on an episode of Cheers (with everyone still sober!) Also, if you're hungry...The soups are made fresh every day. The creamy dill pasta salad is out of this world. The curried tuna sandwich is unlike anything you'll have ever eaten, and the spicy grilled cheese is also pretty extraordinary. Usually get a London fog from the Penny. However due to other coffee shops in the area I haven't been here in a few years but decided to stop by. I was quite disappointed by the quality of the drink, it tasted like milk and nothing else also the staff were quite rude. I guess I shall continue frequenting other coffee shops. read more

After being away for a few years, and knowing The Penny is a staple in the lives of Lethbridge coffee drinkers, I decided to stop in. I was looking forward to my trip in and remembering all the wonderful coffee's I had had there before...but alas, it was a bit different. A place I had come to love, that new my coffee choice by heart, the place where the staff would cheerily join in conversation, the place that was the perfect sort of loud, that was filled with smiling faces and people willing to share tables... was gone. It was filled with loud chaos...people who hoard tables to read an entire book, take cigarette breaks, and then proceed to rudely tell an old woman that it was HIS TABLE. The quality of coffee was...mediocre; a bit weak and lacking in the originality and flavor it once had. There were no familiar faces, no light conversation. Just loud voices and rushed service. We ended up leaving with our coffee cups half full, and unsatisfied. That being said, it's obviously still popular and more catered to the university folk. The Penny Coffee House is a refreshingly hip spot in downtown Lethbridge. Staff is friendly and helpful; menu is great for vegetarians or omnivores who don't mind healthy food. They know how to froth milk like nobody else, here - they serve truly remarkably thick, steady foam. I had to dig down to get to my chai latte. The cappuccino was a huge hit among my dining mates. They also have a wide variety of beautiful, unpretentious desserts - crumbles, pie, turnovers, and tarts - as well as a fantastic list of cold (and hot) drinks. Definitely recommended! read more

We were travelling through Lethbridge recently and were referred to this place when we asked for a place that makes good lattes and has good bakery items to go with it. Also important is wifi and a newspaper. The Penny House excels in all areas. The lattes were superb and the cinnamon buns were awesome. A friendly, comfortable place, highly recommended. read more

I just love The Penny! The best coffee shop in town, and their sweet treats are just amazing. Last time I was there I had the drink of the day and shared a London Fog cupcake with a friend. Good times. Local art and music, combined with the meals named after the staff, give the place a welcoming atmosphere. You feel like part of the community when you're at The Penny. I love stepping in here on a cold winter's day, immediately surrounded by warmth and fogging my glasses. The only bummer happens if you want to sit down and eat lunch here on a week day. It's a very busy place and you may be better off ordering to-go and eating on a nearby park bench. read more

Okay I don't care what your lame complaints are about this place. It truly is a gem. The staff are usually helpfull, and genuinely good people. They cater to the regulars so be prepared to know how this place roles. If you want something fancy go to counter, and select anything you might normally get from Starbucks. I love the Penny! But since they did some new staff turnover they seem to not have been trained properly in how to make a good latte, which is a little frustrating considering you are paying 5 bucks for a medium. When I come in and I see the older staff are on the espresso machine I get pretty pumped, though. yay! Yummy London Fog! I love all of the baked treats and their grilled cheese is phenomenal (make sure you get it with the dill dip!) And the Hunters soup or the gypsy soup is my favorite. All in all I recommend the Penny, we have been coming here since we moved to Lethbridge, it is the one thing I will miss when we leave. (definitely not the wind) read more
