I came here on a Sunday. I live 2 blocks away and the Quaff is my main spot but I decided to give this a try. I'll keep it short: 16 minutes I waited without the bartender even acknowledging me. I'm sad to report this once iconic dive bar in downtown KC took a nosedive since my last visit. The staff were rude, service slow and the once-crispy bacon in the famous BLT sandwiches was flaccid. I took three family members with me to show off one of my favorite haunts when I lived in KC. We were one of three tables seated when we came in. Two others tables were seated shortly after we arrived. We ordered three BLT sandwiches and a dozen wings. Over an hour later, after every other table was empty, our food finally arrived. The excuse from staff is that it was a large order. Three BLTs and wings! It doesn't get much easier than that. The worst part of this review is that the bacon was soggy and smelled of old grease. Got there at 11:30 am and there were three people in there. At 12:40 we left with our food in to-go boxes to go back to work. It was a side salad with bacon and a BLT. Should not have taken that long. Waitress was nice and I felt bad for her as she was the waitress, hostess, bartender all in one. Left her a nice tip that I hope she didn't share with the cook. If you haven't tried their wings yet, you need to! 3 wings with a side of fries, onion rings, or a salad for $11-$12 is honestly a decent price as the wings are giant. Stopped here on a weekend visit to Kansas City trying to check out all the dive bars downtown. This one was pretty standard. We didn't try the food but I saw it coming out and it looked pretty standard bar fare. Everybody that we talk to you said they liked to eat there. Looks like there was some regulars at the bar. It's kind of dark and dingy inside which is what you want for a dive bar. They were doing their part to stay Covid free. I didn't see much parking but we took an Uber. When we left we walked a couple miles to the next place and the neighborhood well not necessarily all businesses felt relatively safe. The staff members were nice. I love dive bars, places that have layers of dust rubbed into greasy tables. I much prefer it to fancy joints that I used to frequent. However, that doesn't mean I have no standards for such places. I almost never give a 1 star rating, the food has to be truly inedible for a place to get that score, but the Peanut had a different problem. The problem of culinary indifference. I have been to the Peanut in Overland Park for drinks but never to this one and never for food. I was told they were known for two things, wings and their BLT. I decided to go for their BLT and with an upgrade to fries and a beer it came out to $20 (with tax and tip). I say an "upgrade" to fries because they serve it with chips. I actually prefer chips, places like Talk of the Town has these amazing thick chips that I think they make there, but when I asked, the server said they were a bag of lays (and the small kiddie bag to boot). As you can see in this review, I did not post a picture, its because everything looks like it was made by me...when I was in college. When I go to a bar, even a dive bar I usually want to eat something that I am too lazy to make or lack the ingredients to make. My BLT consisted of two pieces of toasted bread, a fried egg, lettuce and tomato with a few pieces of bacon. The thing is, the ingredients were stuff someone went to Price Chopper in the morning to buy. The bread was cheap wonder bread, the egg tasted like it was fried in cheap oil (not butter) the bacon, while well cooked, had no taste of spices such as black pepper and the fries were of frozen supermarket variety. I'm not sure why their BLT is known, I could make that BLT for $12, but the difference is that for $12, I could make about a dozen of them (estimating what the cost of materials at a hyvee would cost). I'm sure the Peanut has its loyal fanbase and if I were there with friends (i came after a meeting) I would probably be more forgiving. However, their BLT was a bust and I probably should've ordered the wings. The server was okay and had a pleasant demeanor and there was a lack of screens at the bar (two screens and another one that was ridiculously small and old) as well. read more

The peanut is a cute little bar/pub vibe place that we visited in KC because my husband remembers LOVING their wings back when he lived in the city. It was just a few streets away from our airBNB. When we got there, we were told to find seating wherever. We were luckily able to find a table even though the place was packed. The waiter came to get our order relatively quickly, but it took F O R E V E R to get our order, which was just 6 pieces of their classic wings which we asked TO GO. We even noticed a few people who sat down behind us and nearby who came AFTER us and got their food before us. It was around 10pm at night and we were getting a bit irritated. After maybe an hour of waiting we finally go our wings. We took them back to our airBNB and finally got to try it. I won't lie, the wings were pretty darn good considering they only have one sauce. Very large pieces because they give you the part of the chicken that has the drumstick piece and the flat piece attached together. Didn't come check to take my order until I stared her down. Then forgot my olives. And as we are waiting the Male bartender asked if we ordered.. most likely because everyone around us who came after got their food. We say yes we ordered. Then we're like umm ok. The Peanut is without a doubt our favorite spot when we have a craving for wings and cheese fries. The wings are huge ( the whole wing) and come drenched in an amazing buffalo sauce. If you are not a wing lover, you can't go wrong with the BLT or BLT with egg. We frequent the original Peanut on Main Street and also the one off of 9th and Broadway.
